Does the hi power cable (from coil to distributor) has
the woven metal shield?

If so that could be causing a weak spark; solution:
remove the shield.

 

BTW Do you mean to say that it's 40 K miles ago that you
last services the car?

Is that also the time that you installed John's spark
plug wires?

A car like ours needs servicing each 7500/15000 Miles,
however cables, cap and rotor should last longer.

 

Since your car is subject to water in the engine bay, it
also could be possible that some of the spark plugs are
drowned.

It's simple to check if all spark plugs fire: use an old
spark plug and test all wires, while grounding the plug.

If the problem is with a wire you'll find it.

Subject: [DML] Poor ignition when wet

 

I suspect that the time is nearing for a tune-up: Cap,
rotor, plugs 
and maybe wires. I'm running Hervey's silicone, hi-po
wires vs. 
stock Bougicord wires.

Symptoms: Car is very hard starting/non-starting if
parked in heavy 
rains. It seems as if the secondary ignition is
grounding out to the 
engine block instead of the plugs. 

I live in a townhouse with no garage. I routinely cover
the car but 
this isn't really enough to keep all water out of the
engine bay. 
The problem has become slowly worse over the years and
I'm about 40k 
from my last tune-up.

Do the symptoms jive with worn ignition or am I looking
at another 
problem? What are your thoughts about dielectric grease
on the plug 
wires? Waste of time? Good idea? Do you just put it on
the boots, or 
along the wire or what?
