According to Mike Loasby, former chief engineer at DeLorean, the Stainless frame was the preferred option but the "cold weather" thing made them afraid of cracking / law suits. There next choice was hot dip galvanising, which is excellent at rust prevention, but bungs all the holes up in the frame. That's how we ended up with epoxy coated steel. BTW Rolls Royce cars of the 20's and 30's had a high nickel content in the steel chassis. It is most unusual to find a rusty one.
