I recently picked up an Audiovox CCs1000 cruise control unit. I haven't installed it yet, but it has a magnetic speed sensor system for use on older cars (like ours) which don't have a Vehicle Speed Sensor. Presumably such a magnet-using system could be used to give a speed reading on the dash as well, but adapting it to a mechanical speedometer could prove difficult. You might have to replace your speedometer with an electronic one.
