Not that hard if the gearbox wasn't in a DeLorean. The Renault UN1 gearbox
has the capability to drive a speedometer cable. The problem for the DeLorean
is that the driven gear is installed such that it faces towards the rear of the car
so the speedometer cable would have to make a large radius u-turn back towards
the passenger compartment - or add some kind of gearbox to change direction
in a smaller radius. I would guess this is the reason why we have an angle drive
on the front wheel.
