"Engineering" may be too strong of a word in this instance. This modification was not dreamed up by a room full of PhD's -- it was cobbled together by an unemployed railroad locomotive mechanic in his own driveway. It also is not intended to last the lifetime of the vehicle -- it is just a temporary fix that yields a reliably functioning speedometer until life circumstances allow purchasing a true "engineered" solution.
A direct drive cable is infinitely superior to a tach xRef chart. I offer it here as a suggestion for anyone in the same predicament as myself (broken angle drive and no money for a replacement), and to inspire similarly motivated owners to use their imaginations to fix whatever ails their little cars. Given today's economy, what else can you do?
