I don't believe there is anything wrong with the angle drives in gereral. They are high maintenance but, properly maintained, they are fine.
I have time and again examined why an angle drive fails and it has always been poor lubrication of the angle drive or the lower cable. Once I found that there was a mechanical issue with the Lamda counter - but not the angle drive. Also, the drives may allow moisture into them without the boot (a Grady item at one time I think) or silicone put over the front cap. I have even found a replaced lower cable that had a core that was too long and screwed up the angle drive from too much pressure on the drive when tightened down.
I think attention to detail and proper lubrication should keep one working forever.
