The main problem is that the shift computer, aka govenor, goes bad
often. If the car is continued to be driven with a faulty shift
computer it causes serious internal mechanical damage to the
transmission. The transmission also requires *some* periodic
maintaince. It is important to check the fluid levels (2) regularly,
change the trans fluid when it starts to get dark, and do the on-car
external adjustments. The biggest disadvantage the automatic
transmission has is that it is a lot more expensive and complicated to
repair than a 5-speed. It also has a lot less performance but it IS
easier to drive in traffic! The shift computer can be repaired to last
and it is an inexpensive repair that can be done without removing the
transmission. BTW the 5-speed is not without it's common failure
problems too. Driving with a clutch that doesn't work right can cause
damage to a 5-speed but it is easier and cheaper to repair. If you
were considering buying an automatic and it isn't running right you
may be able to buy it a lot cheaper and possibly fix it for a lot less
than replacing the whole thing! It would take a mechanic experienced
in this transmission to be able to know.
