Well, the Wankel rotary engine was discarded in light of the fuel crunch. Not sure if it makes it "ethical," but it makes it more affordable and better on gas. :) Also, it was planned with more safety features including an air bag which was discarded due to cost. I also believe (and someone can pipe up if I'm wrong) that a stainless steel frame had been planned, but welding problems during manufacture took care of that.
