HI Guys, I've been working with my electrician father in law on the
power windows electrical problem that has made the radio, a/c
illumination lights, and both power windows inoperable. Here is
what we found and what we think is happening. Can you more
experienced guys think about this and see if we are on the right
track?
We found that the brand new power window switch from DMC was bad and
shorted power to both sides of the passenger doow window motor at
the same time. We think this is what caused the problem to start.
The smoke came from the connector for the passenger power window
switch to burn. No wires burned or wire insulation melted, just the
plastic around the "hot" wire on the power window connector.
The fuse (#11) is good. We have power at the proper pin on the
power window switch connector. We have a good ground at the proper
pin on the power window switch connector. All other fuses are good.
When we short the power pin on the power window switch connector to
one of the pins that goes to the power window motor the motor still
does not run (even though we know we are shorting power directly to
the wire to the motor). This is the case no matter which connector
we short power to the motor (passenger or driver side).
Our conclusion for this is that the power window motors do not have
a ground at them to complete the circuit even when we put power
directly to the motor.
The quandry is...where do the motors get their ground from and why
is that affecting the a/c illumination circuit?!?
When we check page M:07:01 and M:07:02 in the DeLorean workshop
manual it shows that Relay 29 is the "A/C Illumination" relay. And
when we check page M:18:19 we see the diagram but there is NO
legend! Are the relays marked as #1, 3, 12, 14, 17 and the part of a
relay marked #16 all the same relay? Is it relay #29 referred to on
page M:07:01 and :02? We also found an old blog that said that
the "red relay" which, we think, is on page M:07:01 as number 31,
labeled "H.R.W. Timer (Green).
Is there a better diagram (with a legend) of the A/C illumination
circuit? Or a diagram of the entire electrical system? It would
sure be nice to see what is really connected to what and how they
are connected.
Anyway, we think our next step is to replace the bad power window
switch and the #31 "A/C Illumination" relay.
Thoughts?
