Also be sure to get a complete set of manuals from your favorite vendor.
The factory bulletin manual explains what updates needed to be performed and
why. (It will also explain the splotches of paint you may have found in
various locations on your car.) Costs for parts can also be found on the
vendors' websites.

The only other thing I would add beyond that would be to invest in a
FanZilla. In two years of ownership, I've already burned through two fused
wire jumpers. I should have learned after the first time! Don't risk an
overheated engine or a fire in the relay compartment.
