[DML] Lowering the DMC-12

 Hi All,



Please all you long time DML members just skip on down the messages -
I am sure there will be disagreement on this post so I will only comment on
my own DMC-12 and lowering.

There are a lot of post in the arc's about this subject with an assortment
of instructions and opinions as to how to do this.

IMHO there is really only one correct way to lower the front end. Get the
correct length springs and install them, then get the whole suspension
system aligned. I got the correct springs from PJ Grady and installed them
my self. I lowered only the front and only to the original spec'. I had the
whole suspension system aligned by a competition alignment specialists.

My DMC-12 looks great with just the right slope, and handles like a dream
on the open highway and twisting country roads. The original design is
second to non and needs no modification or changes. The DMC-12 when
properly set up and loaded (passengers and full fuel tank ) is the equal to
any contemporary.

The worst part of the (US) nose up 81/83 configuration past the ugly
appearance is the 70MPH front end drift. It is very noticeable with a
nearly empty fuel tank and just the driver. The front end of all DMC-12's
should be lowered if for no other reason than returning it to it's designed
handling configuration. Yes I know that the MAX speed is supposed to be %%
or 65MPH depending on where you may live, so what difference does it make
the front end doesn't start lifting until 70MPH! My answer to this is: You
show me any car on todays highways traveling under 70MPH and I will show
you a car with the parking break ON!

Any way to answer the question on lowering:

Do it to restore the DMC-12 to it's designed configuration.
get parts from PJ Grady, DMC Houston or any of the other established DMC
suppliers.

Don't screw around with cutting and swapping, springs it's wrong, and
potentially harmful. Just buy the new front end springs, and what ever you
do don't just lower the whole car. It not only trashes a wonderful design
it also will mess up the handling while driving.
