Subject: Looking for a project Delorean
Hi all,
I am looking for a "project" Delorean in the UK. I'm not sure of the
best way to go about this... should I be looking in the US and have
it shipped to the UK? or is there any chance of finding such a
project in the UK. As far as I can see most of the cars in the UK
seem to be in pretty good condition. Is this a correct assumption?
What sort of price should I be expecting to pay in the UK/US I have
looked in a few classics magazines and they all say the same thing
about 3,000 - 4,000 UK pounds.
I have very little mechanical experience so I would be learning on
the job, can you give me any advice as to the best books to buy to
help with the restoration.
Is there anything that I must make sure is in ok condition for
example I presume if the chassis is badly rusty it will cost a huge
amount of money to sort out.
Thanks for you help in advance.

Kieran

Christian, What Dave said is true about the circuit breakers. The circuit
breakers click on and off just like a relay and make a louder noise., but
they are not supposed to unless there is a problem. The the Coolant fan relay
will also make a quiter click as it turnes on and off, but if the contacts
are burn't or bad the fans won't come on or may come on intermitally. Since
you know the fans are good, the otterstst is good, then make sure all the
contacts are pushed in good , replace the CB with a 40A. Then the only thing
left assuming the wiring is ok would be the coolant fan relay.
You can see some of the up graded replacements on my web site. If you have

Kieran - Not to put you off a DeLorean, but you may want to
consider starting with a more conventional car to learn
the ins and outs of automotive resoration. An older MG,
a Lotus Elan (the original one, not the M100), a Triumph, all
would be less expensive to get into, and, most importantly,
all have very active support clubs most everywhere that are
great resources for local assistance. Should you decide auto
mechanics are not for you, a ready market exists to pick
up on your project. That said, if you have your heart set on
a DeLorean, required documentation is the parts manual, the
service guide, and reprints of the service bulletins, all of
which are available from the usual parts vendors. You might
want to pick up How to Understand, Service and Modify Bosch
Fuel Injection & Engine Management by Charles O. Probst
(ISBN 0-8376-0300-5) or How to Tune and Modify Bosch Fuel
Injection by Ben Watson (ISBN 0-87938-570-7). Books on
automotive electrical systems, brake systems, and general
auto repair would be handy, also. I like Carroll Smith's
* to Win (Tune, Engineer, etc.) series of books for background
knowledge and philosophy, but they are more focused on auto
racing than resotration.

The Car I was looking at seemed to be right at first, now I am looking at

Subject: cleaning trans filter
Hello,
Today I removed the transmission pan and also removed the old
transmission gov/computer. As long as I have the pan off I would like to
clean the filter. I know that there are no more available right now. It
really doesn't look too dirty and there is not much on the magnet.(car has
17k miles) Can I soak it in a parts cleaner? I really don't want to take it
apart. Mr. Grady told me that you really don't need to take it apart to
clean it in most cases.
When should the final drive oil be changed? I want to switch it over to
Amsoil in the near future. Any info would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks

Subject: weird hissing noise
I've been having this weird hissing, screeching noise coming from my
steering column or under the dash. I can't even pin-point the exact
location of the noise.
Also, it makes this noise completely randomly. It hasn't made the
noise for a few months, and now it is happeneing about 80% of the
time I'm driving.
It's pretty loud and very annoying to say the least.
I thought it was completely random, but it seems that if I flash my
brights, the noise will stop. Sometimes it stops for a few minutes,
and sometimes a few seconds, before the noise starts up again.
So I'm thinking it has something to do with brights. But I have
absolutely no idea what...
could there be something loose or what?
Does anyone have any ideas or suggestions for me ?
Thanks

Subject: front brake calipers
I had my front brake calipers and master cylinder replaced last
summer. And recently I noticed that my brake pedal doesn't have much
pressure and goes all the way to the floor.
So I took it in and had the brakes tested. And the bleeder screws in
the front calipers are completely stripped out.
Is there anything that would cause the screws to be stripped out ?
Or is it just that the mechanic who installed the calipers last
summer did it??
I'm just curious because it's going to cost me about $250 to fix this
when I had the exact same thing fixed last summer.
Thanks.

Subject: Re: Subject:: What you see IS NOT always what you get
For those of you who want to learn from my buying experience, here is a
synopsis of the more serious things wrong with my car that a better educated
buyer wouldn't have overlooked:
My car was apparently in an accident before I bought it. I had no idea of
it's past history. The dealer I bought it from didn't give any information.
The main evidence of the accident was a bent grill on the fascia. I had no
idea it was bent. It was bent symmetrically, so I thought it was supposed
to be shaped like that. Then I went to a show and saw several other
DeLoreans -- they were all straight across the bottom -- except mine!
Other things I later noticed that were evidence of a collision:
The headlights were not properly aimed.
A headlight retaining spring on one side was the wrong size which made the
headlight loose.
The right front fender has two very slight indentations at the front, and
the texture over this area doesn't match the rest of the fender (presumably
where a front end collision wrinkled it). Very few people notice it. You
have to know what you are looking for to find it.
The left front fender looks too good to be original. The texture on it is
deeper than the rest of the car.
Both my front lower control arms are damaged from towing, and my alignment
was WAY out which ruined the front tires while I drove it home. New control
arms cost $610 each if you can find them.
A stainless bracket that runs the length of the inside of the front fascia
had been bent and straightened. I intend to replace it someday.
The fan shroud is split on the bottom. I have found that these are made
from a brittle kind of plastic that tends to crack easily. It is very hard
to repair. If you crawl under the front of a DeLorean and see any splits in
this shroud, then that is a good indication that the front of the car was at
least bumped hard.
On an upper note, the fiberglass underbody appears to be undamaged. If it
was repaired, it was a great job. I'll learn more as a do more work on the
car.
I don't intend to keep my car forever. Eventually someone else will own it
(or at least parts from it) if the world lasts long enough. I'm probably
going to become a monk in a Russian Orthodox monastery in a few years, and
before then I will put the car up for sale. For the record, all the above
is describing VIN 03633 which is a Sept '81 build. Even if a future owner
tries to hide the history of my car, this posting will make some of that
difficult. Although hopefully by then I will have totally corrected any
remaining problems so that the above info will be a moot point concerning
the value of the car and will instead just provide some interesting history.
I think it would be great to expand the VIN list of known DeLoreans to
include histories of the cars. Although, unfortunately many people have
things to hide. If someone posted a bad comment about someone else's car,
then someone could be unhappy about it. Oh well. I have learned that it is
always best to let the truth be known. I have fewer problems and a lot less
to remember that way.

Subject: Re: cleaning trans filter
You cannot tell how dirty the filter is unless it is disassembled. If
you soak it you may loosen some of the dirt but some will stay to
loosen up later after you reinstall the filter. To clean the filter
involves grinding the edge off all the way around and separating the
pieces noting the order of assembly so as to be able to reassemble
correctly. You also have to drill out the 3 holes. After cleaning
thoroughly reassemble. YOU MUST REASSEMBLE IN THE PROPER ORDER THE
MESH AND THE SUPPORT BAFFLE! To hold it together get a piece of 1/4
copper tubing 19 1/2" long. Slit lengthwise with a cut-off tool or
hacksaw. Using little "c" clamps to hold the filter together hammer
the tubing all around soldering the ends together. Now in the future
you only have to remove the tubing to clean the filter. The oil in the
final drive really doesn't ned to be changed too often, just keep it
at the proper level. Any good quality 80-90# gear oil will do fine,
synthetics are not needed.

The only way the bleader screws would be stripped out is by a
careless mechanic who bled the system. They sometimes use to much
force and when the strip them, they don't bother to replace them
(even though they cost only a few dollars).
Are your calipers and/or master cylinder bad?? Make sure that there
isn't any air in the brake system....it shouldn't cost you $250 to
replace bleeder screws and bleed the system.

I bought my Delorean (not running) in 1998...to this day I am still

time in 6 years. I still have a lot of work to do on it and so far it
has cost me a total of ~$14,000 (that's including the purchase of the
car). It's a lot of fun IF you have the patience. Restoring a car is
not an over night process...it takes a lot of time and patience. I
did a full frame off restoration on my car and hopefully some time
this summer I will have the exterior and mechanics of it fully
restored.....I'll work on the interior restoration during the

David,
I have rebuilt my automatic transmission filter the way David T explains.
It worked good but was very time consuming (and very rewarding if you are
into doing things the hard way.) There is nothing about the filter that I
would consider a 'wear item' -- meaning something that wears out and needs
to be replaced periodically. It is all metal, and any debris that collects
can be removed. Since I noticed that the magnet on my filter had more
particles on it than were in the filter, I added a few extra small
high-energy magnets from Radio Shack around the perimeter. The next time I
take the tranny apart, I'll find out how effective they are.
In the DML archives, members expressed their opinion that it may be better
to run without the filter in the transmission due to the idea that it
restricts fluid flow too much. I disagree. After rebuilding my filter, I
noticed that it has a lot of surface area which means not much restriction.
I'm no expert on fluid dynamics, but IMHO I think it is better to use a
filter.
I would like to see someone make a new DeLorean product that will make
filter rebuilding easier. I think the best way would be to make a double
ring that is the shape of the perimeter of the filter. The two halves would
fit together and hold the filter together with screws. If I allocated some
time to the project, I could make several in a batch. But right now my
current car project is making DeLorean convex side mirrors. It's a similar
project in that it involves cutting out irregular shaped curves. Only glass
is harder to cut.
Mirror, mirror on my car, who has the coolest DeLorean of them all?

A friend of mine who is a big Kiss fan told me that Ace Frehley (lead
gutarist in KISS) owned a Delorean in 83. Supposidly this was the car he
was driving when he went the wrong way on a one way street, and decided to
try and outrun the cops.
Anyone know about this? Does he still own the car?

Subject: DeLorean sighted in parking lot of Taco Mesa!
Greetings,
While strolling through the parking lot of Taco Mesa in
Irvine, CA; (after an especially filling meal) my cousin pointed out a car
and started laughing. (I still don't know why)..
At first, I couldn't figure out what he was pointing at (it's been awhile)
and then I realized it to be what it was, a DeLorean.
Liscense plate was: 1DAN705
Anybody on the list?
Supratik
