It looks like they took the design from the way a rear hatch opens.
Any type of jeep, caravan, ect..has the doors hindged the same way in
the rear...only problem is you have to start the upward movement in
order for the struts to kick in where as the D has the torsion bars
to do it for you..:)

I totally agree with these comments.  DeLorean owners shouldn't
be your typical snooty car collector or exotic car owner (although
not all are this way).  I think we should all realize what an amazing gift it
is to have and drive such an interesting and rare car.  I also try to go out
of my way to
be nice to people with the car...considering the amount of smiles
I get when driving around (even if they do think it's funny) I can't
help but have a good attitude about it.  Plus, its always good to
dispell myths when you can and to help promote the car.  (Does anyone
else think that making DeLoreans more visible and talking to people
about them will help increase DeLorean value?)

Well, Murray, I don't know how "Dan" did, but my place (30 miles from the
epicenter) definitely looked like an earthquake hit it - parts all over the
place.  But then it looked like that before the quake.  Seriously, no damage
whatsoever.  Not a part out of place or any problems in the house.  I was
afraid my DMC dealer sign might walk off the shelf it sits on, but it was
fine too.  No reports yet from other owners in the area.  I do know I spent
45 seconds having a fun ride under the desk in my office, which is 10 miles
from ground zero.

I have not made any reservations yet but I found tickets for about $560 R/T
from Minneapolis to London to Belfast with Nortwest Airlines.

Yes, there are two airports in Belfast, but only one for International
flights.

The Euro is not yet used as legal coinage for the general market, only
between banks etc.

Complaints from who - anyone who has actually done it?  I've had a steel
block Chevy motor in my car for over 6 years, drive it almost daily in good
weather, and if anything it handles BETTER than a stock one.

There is way too much misinformation on this list lately - please don't add
to it with unfounded statements like that.  If you have doubts about whether
something works, why not ask someone who has actually done it?

David,

Placing a larger speaker in the stock rear speaker location will bring no
improvement in sound quality over the original speaker. The problem with the
original set up is that the speaker is supported by a hose clamp attached to
the speaker magnet, there is no attachment between the speaker frame and the
panel. A loudspeakers low end (bass) response is very much dictated by the
baffle that it is mounted in. Unfortunately in the De Lorean rear speaker
design there is no baffle, this is an acoustical no! no!.

You well get better results with more flexibility in speaker choices by
mounting the speakers in the parcel shelf back panel below the rear window.

Well, I took a few minutes to view the show and I was very disappointed during some of it.


They had an "expert" (yeah, they called him an expert) tell all about the DMC.  Sometimes I wonder if he took any time at all to research the car.  He described the car as an early 81 build, yet the car had no gas flap.  This got funnier when they showed the door sill vin tag which very clearly said "OCT. 81" --a 5000 vin number.

The man also said the early cars came with a metal overflow tank, but it leaked so it was replaced with plastic one.  Now, I don't know too much about anything, but I thought all cars came with plastic and the metal was the replacement.  Someone let me know if I don't know what I'm talking about.  It was funny to see how the guy said the car was so "remarkable" because it still had the metal tank in it.  --Obviously not original!

It got worse:  Late in the segment, he said the cars late in production were painted red or black in an attempt to stimulate sales.  Where did this come from?   Way off.

He also said the interior colors came in gray and "chocolate brown."  --I suppose we could let that one slide....

Overall the segment was good, simply because they were positive in representing the car.  They gave an accurate description of the fun driving experience.  --But I wish the "expert" would have done his homework.

What is the current conversion rate to US Dollars?

There are prices on the DOA site, but I don't think they are US Dollars.

1 USD = 0.687 GBP  (135 GBP = $196.46 USD)
1 USD = 0.847 IEP  (135 IEP = $159.34 USD)

Conversion rate plays some significance in budgeting the trip!

I have to agree with Richard here;

On the way to the ETDOC meeting this weekend, I had to stop for gas and immediately was surrounded by a group of teenagers, and the questions started to flow.  One question that really caught me off guard was the one guy who asked me "if they were really as bad as people said"  I asked him what he meant, and he said that numerous people had talked about how unreliable they were.  I quickly dispelled that one, telling him they had a couple of quirks which was very common for any brand new car, much less car company, and then gave the examples of the cars that had more than adequate miles on them (Joe's 500,000 one for instance)  And of course, the conversation then turned toward "where can I get one?"

Just to give my opinion on the matter..the reason I went with an engine swap
is b/c I had alot of reliability issues with my DeLorean.  Its really quite
strange, some people have problems every week with their D, and others never
do.  The reason I think I had so many problems was probably due to earlier
on in the ownership.  When I first got the DeLorean back in 1985 I was only
15 years old and had no clue how to work on a car so I took it to local
garages. (I'm not really near any of the DMC shops)  Its amazing how many
places said they could work on the car, but no one could really fix it.  I
just read someone's comments about taking it to a shop that said they had
worked on DeLorean's before and when he got there, they asked him to open
the front hood to check out problems.  That EXACT thing did happen to me one
time as well, and I left quickly.  Through the years, ALOT of different
shops worked on my car, but as I got older, I started tinkering with it
myself and learning how easy it really is to work on the DeLorean.  However,
by this point, so many different shops had rigged and done some crazy
setups, the car was pretty much in bad mechanical shape. (Scott Muller can
attest to this ;o) ) When the engine died on me the last time, I priced
fixing the car and, at that point, I decided why not try to drop a Chevy
engine in it.  So I did.  As true purest see it, it is a desecration to the
car.  However, I bought the car for my enjoyment and my enjoyment solely.
Some people may like the things I've done to my car (ground effects, rear
wing, stereo, alarm system w/ remote start via car phone, different seats,
etc) and some may not like what I've done.  I'm quite happy and proud of my
car and that all that matters.  Its kinda like the kid ricers.  I don't
understand why someone buys a Honda Civic and puts 50 stickers on it, puts
big double wings on it and 18' rims...I don't like that but...if the owner
does...so be it.  Who am I to judge his taste?  Look at it this way, your
DeLorean just became a little rarer ;o)

The BTTF Good/Bad debate will never end. As the owner of Washington license
plate IN2TIME, I obviously have no problem with the connection. What is
important is doing what YOU want.

Two days ago, Jan Elgersma (a Pacific Northwest DeLorean Club member in
Canada) sent me this link to a license plate maker. Thanks to you, I didn't
have to wait long for an appropriate opportunity to share it with the DML.

The Back to the Future related vanity plates are fun to look at,
expecially for people who know about the car and the movie.  I
personally love the "AT88MPH" I've seen on Duke's car and a few
others.  But I wanted to be original with my plate, so me and Aaron
Posey of ETDOC (East Tennesee DeLorean Owners Club) decided to get
our plates with our VIN numbers on them.  Mine is DMC6960, and
Aaron's is DMC3202.  Obviously, this wont work on the 82's and 83's
unless you live in NY, but it would still be neat to see a couple
cars pop up across the country with this type of plate.

The engine compartment light, like some of the tail lights, didn't light
up.  Turned out to be for the same reason, the center wire connection
tab where it was riveted to the bulb support brass strip was not making
proper electrical contact. Same fix, take the socket assembly off and
solder the tab to the support.  (Wire was off one side of the switch,
checked the switch first for continuity, worked just fine).

I drilled a small hole through the rivet, knowing I was going to use a
small sheet metal screw to put it back in place, then a larger bit to
spin out the rivet and remove the assembly.  After soldering decided to
redo the insulated portion, it looked pretty doggy.  Drilled  it out.
Took a while to figure what would be fairly permanent, ended with
something you don't have, a pin plug socket, such as used on early
meters and earphones, it was all nylon with a metal nut to hold it on.
Ground down the face to about the same dimension as the original
insulator, countersunk the head slightly with a drill bit about the same
size as mid point on the bulb, screwed it into place, took a soldering
lug of a slightly smaller inside dimension and let the top of the bulb
hold it in place under tension, reconnected the wire, should be a
lifetime fix.  If you should decide to do this I think nylon bolts  or
screws from the hardware store could have the heads ground flat and
countersunk slightly to emulate what I did with the pin jack (the hole
in the strip is pretty good size).  If you're not of the
see-if-you-can-fix-it-before-you-throw-it-out persuasion, this would be
of no interest to you.

I beleive I remeber going to PC Richards and finding Pioneer speakers
that were made in that size. They sounded nice too....but then again
they were in a closed box in the display wall to resonate the sound
nicely.

    Sorry, I spelled your name wrong completely!  I noticed it right after I

blackboard!
    The minute I saw where the earthquake epicenter was, I thought of you
and hoped you were safe and sound  (plus all your DeLorean parts).   Good
old Email, we could not get a phone line thru to our daughter at the
University Presidents office, but after she crawled out from under the desk,
she got on the computer and sent us an Email, which we got within half an
hour!  Glad you are okay.

Not to mention that is the speaker goes south, it will be allot
easier to replace than having to remove the door seals and then
carefully pealing back the trim to get the panel out without damaging
anything.

Ian,
I don't know your finanial status but you may want to just get an importer to do the paperwork for you.
Then have them load onto a transport for travel.
I can do some research for you for both if you would like.
To trailer a car runs about $1000.00, best guess.  You can look in Hemmings moter news on the web for some companies.
That way somebody else gets to do all the paperwork and you do not have to touch the car before it gets to Texas.
By the way I have done the customs thing in Long Beach
What a circus. From window "A" to window "B" and on and on. Unless finacially unfesable recommend you get a pro to do the work.

It's a function of cassette tape usage & luck.
Each time the door opens and closes the ribbon cable bends at a 90 degree
angle.
That's where the hairline fracture occurs.
If you remove the black face of the unit and examine the cable on the door
you can see it yourself.

If you find that you're using the cassette to some degree,  you might
consider the modification. The cable may last forever if you loop it over or
don't play casettes.
However, at this point in time the bend may be a bit "locked in".
You'd have to take a look and decide.
It's a job that requires a fair amount of skill.
Plus, even a seemingly small job can become bigger than expected.

FYI
This Machine also suffers from poor high end (treble).
You may be interested to know that there is a SIMPLE treble boost
modification I developed almost 20 years ago. It makes the machine come alive.
If you would like I can add the modification to the Zilla site.
