Sorry, I wasn't asking to reveal the secrets of breaking in to a "D".
It's just that the way my luck has been running for the past day or so
I'm bound to have a flat & not be able to get to the jack or the spare.
I know about the "drill a hole through the bottom" bit, I just was
looking for a somewhat less drastic solution.

Beside which, I was informed about 1 PM,  that today was my last day on
a contract.  So, I have to assume that the tire gods smiled upon me and
I did not need to get into the trunk......

Perhaps you should look into having your car tuned up.  Both me and the previous
owner of my father's car thought it was slow until I had the engine tuned by a
local Volvo dealership.  I took it out driving along side my design professor in
his Porsche 911 one day when he decided to race me on a section of deserted
highway.  I won! After we arrived at our destination my dejected prof. told me
that he just couldn't keep up.  By the way, my professor is German and races his
Porsche in amateur competition!  Before the tune up, I couldn't even squeal the
tires on wet pavement, now I can burn rubber in all gears.  The car is naturally
aspirated and, as far as I know, has no internal modifications.  I do however
get horrific gas mileage.
       What's going on here?

I just spent the last three evenings putting my PC OS back together after a
user-inspired problem. I just now realized that I lost any backlogged
pics-of-the-month  http://www.dmcnews.com/potm.html   that I was holding
(along with my priceless collection of DML moderator hate mail). So - If you
submitted something for the DMCNews web page, and it has not been shown yet,
please send it in again (or send in something new). It's the first of the
month and I have nothing to show.

If you sent nastygrams to the moderators, they are forever lost in the big
bit bucket in the sky.

I think Mr. Strickland is a real owner, based on previous posts, but he has
only started posting recently and has apparently not adjusted to DML culture
yet.  I'm sure he will, as I'm assuming his rant on us slow-driving geezers
was at least partially tongue-in-cheek.

But I must disagree about the stock Delorean being adequate for daily driver
use.  I suppose it depends on where you do your daily driving!  Here in
Austin, SUVs and Porsches account for about 90% of the traffic at rush hour,
and I'm only slightly exaggerating.  :-)   Regardless, one must drive
somewhat agressively to navigate in dense, fast-moving traffic, which is
problamatic in a car that can't beat a minivan into the gap.  Not to say
that it's impossible, just ill-advised (and bit dangerous, IMHO).

It's strange that all of the sudden now Volvo is comming out with a
gullwinged sportscar, and that Ford also has a new Mustang that does
something like 0-60 in 4.2 seconds or so. Especially now since the
majority of JZD's legal hurdles are out of his way. The only real
relation the car has to the DeLorean are the doors, other then that
it just looks like someone slammed the rear end of a Honda into a
Lotus that was fitted with gullwings. The doors have way too high a
sill which really kills the practicallity of the car. >From both the
thickness of the doors combined with the hight of the door sill, the
car does not appear to have torsion bars installed. Nor does it even
appear to have functioning windows that roll down. Another thing to
note on the doors would be the design. Appearance wise they look like
they were pulled from a Bradley GT since they latch only at the
bottom. There is no room/weight allowance to install a full safety
cage in the doors. Plus I'd be worried the door might bend in and cut
into my leg if not amputate it entirely in a side impact. Even if the
tiny striker pin on the bottom held the door in place, the sill and
the door itself are totally flush. Nowhere except the front does the
door overlap it keep it from bending/cutting into the passenger
compartment. If I had to put my life on the line, I would choose be
inside of a DeLorean or Bricklin in a major auto accident then this
Volvo. Can't tell if the car has a hatch back, but it looks more like
a notch back trunk. It appears there's more room in the back for the
engine, but it probably a front mount with rear seats since there are
no grates/vents on the back to exhaust any hot air. Which you can
then imagine the feeling of being "trapped" sitting in the back
trying to get out by crawling over the seats and that door sill. A a
350hp motor would be impressive, it would kill any regular owner on
insurance rates. Plus comparing this car to the DeLorean it looks as
though the rear vision is worse creating even larger blind spots then
the DeLorean. All in all, this will probably only be a limited
production sports car. But even if it enters production indefinately,
it would still be made in very small numbers. Just my .02¢

Jim,

If you describe the DeLorean as "SLOOOOOOWWWWW", your DeLorean has a problem.

I agree that the acceleration won't take your breath away, but it is definitely quick. If you know how though run the gears and keep those rev's up as high as possible you should be able to wipe out 80% to 90% of the cars next to you.

The main ingredient to PRV performance is THE DRIVER and ACCELERATION ENRICHMENT! Malfunctioning or non-functioning acceleration enrichment circuits will drop 3 to 5 seconds of the 0 to 60 time and will seriously effect all acceleration times.

  controlled pristine environments.  For this reason, there is NO WAY that my
  moderate-shaped Delorean will ever be worth any sort of collector status...
  SO! I intend to supermodify, hacksaw, file, rip, tear, bend, spindle, and
  mutilate my car into whatever comes into my little brain, and people on the
  street are still going to look at it drive by, and won't have to go to a
  museum to ever see a delorean.  I'm going to make it fun for ME to drive,
  not you "mature owners" who drive 25 in a 50 MPH zone whom I yell at.

Yes, Gabe. I for one, do not think that the gullwing doors are the only
thing that makes the DeLorean special. Its just everything about it, its
history, its design (both interior and exterior), the rear mounted engine,
the glassfibre and stainless steel, and so on, and so on...

But I am glad that another car manufacturer is about to productionizing a
car with gullwing doors. They may be gimmicky, but they are VERY practical.
Bottom line is - I want to see more cars with gullwing doors!

And no-one has to be afraid that the DeLorean will suffer if more
manufacturers start to incorporate gullwing doors instead of conventional
ones.

The DeLorean will always be unique. In fact its so unique that maybe people
will start to say DE LOREAN DOORS instead of GULLWING DOORS....like: "Oh,
look at that Volvo/ Chrysler/Ford/GM car -it has DE LOREAN doors!"

In any event, our beloved DeLorean will always be GULLWING ONE!
No question about it!

Mark,
I lived in Southern California when I bought my DeLorean in May 1982.  My
wife and I decided to go to Las Vegas to celebrate the new car.  We stoped
at Hoover dam on the way to Vegas.  We were gone not more than 30 minutes
and when we came back there was a print of a hikeing boot on the D.  Under
the dusty print was a dent that went in about 3".  Imagine how I felt, a
brand new car and some sorry SOB had put a boot print in the side.  It
stayed that way for about 6 months, when one day a friend that was a car nut
said he would try his plunger and see if the dent would come out.  It did
and that is the only thing that happened to this day.  The car is a daily
driver and I have all ways lived in big city areas (read the burbs like
Metarie).

When at idle with my A/C on the RPMs are so low that many times my D stalls.  I put on a new 140 Amp. alternator but the same thing happens.  Any suggestions on what might be my problem?

"Dirk Wacker's Delorean Stainless Steel Products Co.". 
They offer Delorean louvers made of stainless steel that are powder coated in
black and supposedly will not crack, bend, chip or fade.

Greetings,
        Have a quick question.  I searched the archives for about an hour
this morning to no avail.  I have been looking into a digital speedometer
and think I've found one.  The issue is that the current setup is
mechanical.  Here's the quote from the manufacturer:

"We supply a pulse generator that connects to the speedometer cable or cable
drive.  It can connect to a 7/8" speedometer drive or 5/8" cable end."

 My question is: Does anyone know offhand if our speedometer cable or drive
is compatible, given this information?

As discussed here occasionally, the CarTalk guys have a owner
satisfaction survey.  So far they have had over 200,000 respondents.  As
of last year, the DeLorean held the #1 slot for all time owner loyalty.
Today it ranks #10, which is still excellent.  You can see the results

While it is not a scientific survey, the data is still very interesting.

As I recall, the DeLorean used to have a 90%+ loyalty score, now it is
down to about 65%.  That score is still greater than Lexus, BMW, Jaguar,
and all American makes (except for International!?).  Apparently some
very unhappy people cast negative DeLorean votes recently.

In the Comments section, I found at least one bogus testimonial which
may have brought down the score.  Someone claiming to have a 1988
DeLorean gave it a bad score because: "The Flux-Capacitor is always
breaking down!!!"

A few more positive votes could help offset the negative ones.

According to DMC Houston's website  and various other places the Delorean's
front springs were changed to accomodate for a supposed new standard for
bumper height.

Why then do all of the Kits not only lower the front but also the rear?

I personally like the look of the rear on a stock car.

Has anyone ever just lowered the Front springs?  Do you have pictures?

What is the typical cycle time you should have on the A/C
Compressor.  My compressor cycles 4-5 seconds on and 4-5 second off. 
The high side pressure is running about 225-250 psig and the low side
cycles from 25 - 45 psig.  If this is not normal, is this indicating
a low freon charge or plugged orifice tube?  I don't know if this
affects the cycling, but the ambient temperatue has been running
about 90-100 degf.

Our First car (6974) was 'tuned' up by the previous owner, he had had it
tweaked and our car gets 17mpg on average. our mechanic hasn't tried to
fix the car but has commented on it being "faster than usual."

This is the reason PJ Grady only sells the front springs to lower the front
end.  I recently bought a set of their front springs and installed them.  It
brought the front end down to match the spacing of the rear at stock height. 
The car rides much better and handles much nicer.  Of course you can lower
any car all the way around if you wish.  But I believe lowering just the
front brings the car back to its original intended specs.  And I agree that
rear stock height looks good as it is.  Just that the front looks like a 4X4
at stock height.  Right Dan? :)  I can get pictures if you wish.  Email me
privately.  Of course everyone has a different opinion and different taste.

DMC uses  standard 7/8 speedo drive, according to one of my racing friends
who's into gauges in stock cars. Out of curiosity, which did you pick? I've
been interested in changing all the gauges to something backlit (the front
nightime lighting is dim and rather crude looking for a great car like the
D). I have a complete extra cluster from a wrecked D so I don't have to
modify my original. Tried to get one of the white face gauge overlay
manufacturers interested , they have one that uses a 1/16th inch
electroluminescent panel for lighting. No luck so far.

Just wanted to remind everyone that there is a great show at Lowes Motor Speedway starting in two weeks. Hemmings will be there, and a Kruse Auction is going to be held on the 16th. Hundreds of cars attend every year. The show is mainly a collector car market. All the cars for sale line the entire lenght of the track, and the show cars sit on the grass at the pit area. Vendors of all types (as well as more cars) fill the entire center of the track. This is a great place to show off your car! The show runs from September 14-17. Subject: Thermostat

Hey List,
    I am almost done with my car.  just have to throw the interior back in
next week.  Doing a few last touches right now.  I planned to replace the
Thermostat because I want everything to work properly.  NAPA didnt have
DeLorean in there book but gave me a thermostat to a 1981 Volvo V-6 and said
bring it back tomorrow if it doesnt fit.  before I tear it apart to put it in
I want to know if it will fit.  the part is NAPA HEAVY DUTY THERMOSTAT #280. 
It is made by wahler and made in West Germany.  will this fit?  I would have
bought a thermostat from DMC Joe or Grady like usual, but I need this done
asap.
