Moderator's note:
This is a subject that, probably more than any other, dominates the
archives. let's not forget to use them for some of these answers.
Hey List, If I were to put an aftermarket am/fm radio
with tape and cd player in my DeLorean, would I need a
more powerful alternator? I have the Motorola 90 amp.
If I would need a bigger one, what would you suggest,
a 105 amp, or a 140 amp? Thanks in advance.

"It's not that bad! It's not that bad!"
There seems to be a looming bitterness between the people wanting
PERFORMANCE vs the people wanting a fine lookin cruiser.
Everyone out there saying "it's not that bad!!!" about the
acceleration/power is in denial! The Delorean is SLOOOOOOWWWWW.
it was always SLOOOOWWWWWW. Some people, however, like it that way... The
same people that keep KIA and GEO in business, who don't care that it
takes
60 seconds to get to 60 MPH; and have a notebook in their cars marking
down
gas prices, mileage, and gallons added- "Ooh, we got 32.6 MPG on this
tank,
honey!!!"..
The rest of us who like sailing the back end out flying around corners on
wet pavement ("Manner of turning", or so the police say...), pullin
wheelies
off the line and snickering blowing away those weeble-looking enonoboxes
think the power is horrible!
There are so many people hiding their cars in their garages keeping them
in
controlled pristine environments. For this reason, there is NO WAY that
my
moderate-shaped Delorean will ever be worth any sort of collector
status...
SO! I intend to supermodify, hacksaw, file, rip, tear, bend, spindle, and
mutilate my car into whatever comes into my little brain, and people on
the
street are still going to look at it drive by, and won't have to go to a
museum to ever see a delorean. I'm going to make it fun for ME to drive,
not you "mature owners" who drive 25 in a 50 MPH zone whom I yell at.
DSV- Safety vehicle? It was SAFE becuase you can't go fast enough to get
into trouble! hahaha

Subject: Re: Permanent solution for engine cover hinge rust
Since this is a part which suffers frequently to the elements, I am
surprised
someone hasnt remanufactured them. Perhaps out of stainless then painted
black? I know you can no longer buy them and have to try to find a used
one,
if you need one as I did when one of mine broke. Its really a simple part
which should be easy to reproduce. I would think there would be a
increasing
demand in the future for them as well.

<< On both of My DMC's and nearly every other DMC I have seen that lives
in a
rust-prone environment (like up here in Oregon), I have seen rusting
engine
cover hinges. Since the problem areas on the hinge are the inner hinge
portiotion where the surfaces slide across each other, it does not appear
that repainting or powercoating the engine cover hinges would really
provide
a permanent solution to avoid thie unsightly rust. Does anyone have a
real/permanent solution to the slight rust typical on the engine cover
hinges?

Subject: DeLorean in PA?
Are there any DeLorean owners in the central Pennsylvania region that
would
be willing to show their car off to an 18-year-old college student who has
never seen one in real life? I would just like to look at the car in
person
and maybe take a few photographs, as it will be about 4 years until I can
afford one.
Thanks,
Matt

Subject: Re: Re: comparison
Group,
According to a DeLorean expert (certainly not me)...Ed, the owner of
DeLorean
One...he claims that there are maybe 300 (maximum) really good quality,
original DMC-12's in existence. He says there are alot of poorly
repaired,
poorly maintained, "unmolested" but also unreliable and undesirable cars
out there. As far as rarity goes, please realize that Ferrari built over
12,000 308's and 8,200 Testarossa's. So seeing a really nice D is
actually
more difficult than seeing one of the above F's...and their current resale
prices reflect the large population of the cars out there - 308's can sell
for low 20's for an average one and early Testarossa's sell for low 50's
all
day long. Engine rebuilds - figure the cost of the car for the 308 and
35,000 for the Testarossa.
I've driven every modern Ferrari made and have owned most and the 308 was
an
embarrassment to Maranello performance-wise.
Bottom line is all cars have pluses and minuses...and everyone has
different
tastes...luckily there are enough choices to make us all happy.

Richard,
Check the back issues to find your answer or call one of the parts
suppliers.
It is possible to open the hood without the cable, may take some time, but
from someone who has done it, after getting it open you will want to look
at
old issue of Delorean World (Vol.1 Aug. 1983). There is a back up way to
keep
this from ever happening again. I do agree with Ken and Dave that we as
owners do not want to tell people how to break into our D's. But I
understand
how the blood pressure can rise when this has happened.
To those who want to upgrade the power of the Delorean. Go for it, but
remember the old adage "The slower you go the longer it lasts!!!"
Personally
I enjoy the power of the Delorean "stock".

Subject: Re: Comparison
Remember that us old guys (45 here) who bought their DMC's new can now
afford
(assuming our brains are not tiny) to buy seriously fast, good handling,
incredible braking and balanced cars that would eat any modified DeLorean
and
just own the D for what it is - a curiosity of the automotive world that
came
to market undeveloped and left precisely the same way. Those of us that
bought the cars new in 81, 82 or 83 could've bought very well developed
and
fast as hell (for the time) Porsche 911's and have a lot of money left
over.
We bought them because they were unusual and admired the guy who had the
guts
to do it himself. If John Z. could have brought the car to market five
years
sooner, had time to develop a better car and price appropriately, the
demise
of the DeLorean may never have occured and "tiny brained" people wouldn't
have the desire to bend, spindle and mutilate as no one does so to 911's.
Every serious collection and museum has one in their inventory due to the
history and uniqueness - not the performance.

Subject: Re: comparison-Final post
For the postings that have occurred durring the past few days, I am
very pleased to have different view-points presented. And would like
to take the time now to conclude this thread, or hopefully the
original topic of it. In saying this I understand every one who has
responded, and agree with them on their key points (well, almost
everyone). So here go's...
To Fred #6894:
I am very happy that there is someone else out there who not only
agrees with me, but also understands where I'm coming from. In it's
untouched state, there is nothing wrong with the power of the DMC-12.
It perfroms quite nicely for everyday useage.
To Gabe W. and Trevor Johnson #6974 & 4055
I agree with both of you as well. The DeLorean in it's orignal state
is not on the same level as the average sports car. It does't have
the 0-60 times as other sports cars, and doesn't have the best
turning radius. So yes it there is room for some improvements.
In either of these 2 situations, the owners here all appear to be
very pleased with thier cars in one way or another wheather it's
performance, looks, or otherwise. And being happy with your car is
what counts no matter what type you own! Personal feelings aside, if
swapping out the PRV for a Chevy is what makes you happy with your
car, then go ahead and do it. I personally perfer to keep my engine
original, and would rather take the route of improving the existing
powerplant rather then a "hasty" swap. Or just leaving it untouched
is perfectly fine too! However keeping your car original to the point
where it hinders performance (i.e. keeping a stock radiator, a Ducy
alternator, the flimsy pick-up hose in the fuel tank, etc... just for
the sake of keeping the car original) can also be just as counter
productive for the car. But who am I to tell anyone what to do with
thier car?
Which brings me to the one person whom I disagree with:
Jim Strickland
I SERIOUSLY doubt that this is a posting from someone who is an
authentic DeLorean owner.
1. This person's comments appear to simply be here to start an
argument between us all. No matter what is said, this person has
figured out a way to insult people. Re: modifications, performance, &
drivers as individuals.
2. This post appears to be from a fradulent source
