When I bought my D in Jan. I received only one set of actual DMC keys
which were not in the best condition. So like many of you I was in search
of a replacement, and the parts suppliers did not have any. Then I came
across a post from Lee Seiler stating that in his spare time he make a
replica of the ignition key. So I sent him the money for a key($15.00+$2.50
S/H) I received the keys yesterday and I am very pleased with them. So if
you are looking for an ignition key Lee makes an excellent replica. He is
also in the process of getting started on the lighted door key. So I thank
Lee very much for the services he provideds for the DeLorean Community and

I thought a while back someone said that DMC Houston was looking into
producing the mirrors for the DeLorean (convex mirrors?). Replacing a
standard part w/an aftermarket one is fine as long as it meets or
exceeds the manufacturers original specifications. You might be
marked off points for the mirrors in a concourse judging. But if your
car sees the road alot, the safety issue is way more important.

When I get bored in traffic, I will make a game of sizing up the rear-view
mirrors of the other cars, looking for a convex replacement for mine. No
luck so far. :-)
I found a Toyota replacement that was the right shape but about 2mm too
tall. Funny thing about glass is that you can't really squeeze it into an
opening, as evidenced by the hundreds of tiny mirrors I ended up with.
I supposed I could get a piece custom-made but I'd rather get an
off-the-shelf part. Still looking...

I can tell you this, when the Delorean was made "larger" springs were
crammed into the front suspension to raise the cars bumper heigth.
The reason they did this was becasue the DOT was going to raise the
bumper height requirement, so instead of DMC redesigning the entire
suspension they shoved in bigger springs. I don't know why Nylon
straps would be there or why anyone would place them there. If you
are looking to lower your car to the original specified height the
Delorean was designed to be at, I would recomend that you give Rob at
PJ Grady a call as he has new front lowering springs or The Delorean
Motor Company in houston where they have a complete set (front and
rear) lowering springs. Do not do the old "cut the excess off" the
spring trick, you will ruin the handling of the car.

Hi Gang!
It never ceases to amaze me what a fantastic resource this list is. Special
thanks to Dave Sontos for coming up with the answer to my problem.
For the benefit of the archive and for those of you who may also have a dead
temperature guage here's what Dave suggested.....
Check the connection at the temperature sensor. Here's how to find the
sensor...You may need to remove the air cleaner first. Standing at the back
of
the car looking into the engine compartment, At the right side of the
engine, all the way at the back of the right cylinder head. The sensor
is on the inside face of the right cylinder head. Assuming the intake
manifold is on the inside face and the exhaust manifold is on the
outside face. You should see a green wire with blue stripe heading under
the intake manifold from the sensor. If you have a parts manual look at
section 1-1-5 item #45 is the sensor.
I simply cleaned the connection and the guage functions like new. Sounds
like a pretty simple solutions - but man, oh, man can electrical gremlins
make you pull your hair out!

Well with winter coming fast, its time to start thinking about my projects
for the D. right now i'm in need of a grill, air dam, right front fender, an
engine cover, a trunk mat, and a set of leather for the seats. If anyone has
any of these parts in fair or good condition send me an e mail.
I also plan on replacing the front and rear rotors, calipers, pads, and
master cylinder. But I plan on getting them new from one of the suppliers.

Hello again,
I just got a chance to install my new Delco Alternator from PJ Grady, let me
just say, wow what a differance! My overall performance of my delorean has
inproved greatly. The hesatation problems that I had before (when the
headlights and the cooling fans were on) is gone, making my D much more of a
pleasure to drive. Their modafacations to the alternator and the wiring
harness made instalation a snap. It was well worth the money.

PS: The new door struts work great also, a word of advice to everyone, no
matter how much your doors sag, replace the struts before adjusting the
tortion bars, my drivers door wouldent open at all on its own before the new
struts, now it opens like brand new.

Hi everyone
Well I found another dead D. This one is at a service station in Geneva IL,
the plates expired in 1988, thats right 1988, it has just over 30,000 miles
on the clock. Its an 82, 5 speed with a gray interior.
I talked to the man at the service station who told me that the car was towed
there in 1994, after sitting for an exteneded period of time. It suffers
from the typical fuel system problems, the owner of the car had the shop
start working on the car, but never paid to have the job finished.
So right now as it sits, its going to need a fuel pump, injectors, filter,
possably a fuel distributor, 4 tires, a new battery, headliners, interior
work, and door struts. And thats just for starters. Theres no telling if
theres frame damage
The shop owner said that the man who owns the car wont take anything less
then $13,000. Which Im sure everyone would agree is crazy. Has anyone else
in the chicagoland area seen this car

The 3 "factory" Right hand drives were (are) fitted with such mirrors, I
have been told that they were clearly labelled up as such..they were made in
Germany, but I suspect the only way to retro fit them today would be to find
a similar sized mirror and glue in on to the top of the origanal...I BET
SOME ONE HAS ALREADY DONE IT?

The previous owner of my DeLorean, on the day we paid him, said,"...and you
can polish it with steel wool." He never said he did it himself, but I didn't
really know if you were supposed to do that. Of course, knowing that all of
you smart people would know a lot better, I checked out the many informative
DeLorean sites and in the DeLorean FAQ, I found that you were not supposed to
use steel wool, saying it would appear the the stainless steel was rusting,
and it was actually the tiny bits of steel wool.
What I was wondering is:
Is there a way to see if the car was polished by steel wool? And if it has,
is there a way to reverse it and take the tiny particles of steel out of the
stainless steel? I wouldn't want my dream car looking like it was "rusting."

We remove the entire hood and lay it flat on its back whenever replacing the hood seal; makes the job much easier.

I finally found an adhesive that will actually hold the hood weather stripping in
place for more than a month or two. It is a Permatex product called, duh, "Super
Weatherstrip Adhesive", part #80". This stuff really works great but I have created
another problem unrelated to the adhesive. Regluing the weatherstrip is a very tricky
operation, particularly around the corners and especially around the "hood flap"
area. I worked a small section at a time using heavy duty masking tape to hold
each section in place until I was satisfied that it was completely cured. No
problems so far. BUT, when I arrived at the end where the two ends meet I came
up about 2 inches short. Rather than try to redo the entire thing I would like
to simply glue in a new short 2 inch section. Problem: Where does one find 2
inches of OEM hood weather stripping without having to buy the whole thing? I
haven't tried the usual sources yet, I was hoping that someone might have a scrap
piece sitting around that I could bum 2 inches from. If so, please email me at
<rapparivarat@xxxxxxxxx>. I will be happy to send you a SASE, or payment if
necessary, for your trouble. I'm not looking for something for nothing, it's just
that I have a problem spending a couple of hundred bucks for 2 inches of OEM
weather stripping. I'm only doing this for looks because this car is NEVER in the
rain. If I cannot locate a scrap piece I will just leave it as it is. Thanks.

When I got my D, I noticed the engine compartment light was not working and I
subsequently bought a bulb, assuming it was burned out. Before I installed
it, I noticed that the switch, supposed to be located on the upper left
firewall where the plunger is depressed by the engine cover, was totally
removed!
Some owners have disabled theirs to prevent them from getting stuck on,
melting the lens, and the hot plastic igniting after dripping on the red hot
muffler. (Hopefully an overreaction.) But that may explain it.

(In the past) I have replaced outside mirrows with "convex" ones
(passenger side). Any glass place (good ones) can cut to size a
larger mirror to fit the DMC. I have thought about it but have not

2) In any event, if both FRONT and REAR shock absorbers are available, are
they as good as new after all these years in storage?
3) If replacements are available what is the best choice? And what
modifications are necessary? Do they differ in function from the originals?
If they do, then what are the advantages/disadvantages of the new ones?
Hope to get some clear and consise answers to my questions....
PS! Has someone else on this list ordered new window assys and new
euro-springs from DMC Houston? If so, did you get instruction sheets
together with the shipment???

I've seriously thought about this as well. I was going to eventually post
that question, but you beat me to it. Some people prefer flat mirrors for
the passenger side, but I really prefer the spherical ones. And it bothers
me to no end that there is a text message etched in the glass reminding me
that objects in the mirror are closer than they appear. Actually I think
they are farther away than they appear, but that's my opinion.
On a non-Delorean, I have upgraded the passenger mirror to a spherical one.
I found something close enough in a junk yard from a newer model car that
had the same outer shape. I had a problem getting the new mirror to fit
because the mirror socket was made to take a flat mirror. The spherical
mirror does not lay flat. I fixed this by re-shaping the surface of the
mirror socket using a belt sander and then gluing the mirror on with black
silicone caulk and filling around the edges with my finger. Whatever
adhesive is used, you need to be sure that it does not dissolve the
reflective layer.
Maybe a glass shop could come up with something? I've been thinking about
getting a large passenger mirror off of a junker SUV and trimming it down to
fit the Delorean. If I started with a mirror big enough, I could crop out
that silly text message etched on the glass. But then maybe an auto glass
shop could do it easier. If anyone tries this, I suggest keeping the center
of the mirror the same because using only one corner of a larger spherical
mirror may not give you a true sphere, but I don't know this as a fact.
I intend to do this to my Delorean eventually unless someone comes up with a
better idea. If this hasn't been done before, I'll try to make up a few
extra mirrors for anyone else who may be interested.

But then again, I may be wasting my typing here. An auto glass shop may
have everything on hand to do a better job. Does anyone know? But if
anyone else can't come up with a mirror without the silly text message
etched on the glass, then I'm definitely cutting one down from a larger SUV
mirror.
I don't recommend gluing the aftermarket bubble mirrors over the passenger
mirror. Those are just too spherical to do any good that far away. I
bought a car with one stuck on it. It was such a good fit, I could never
get it off.

I should take a look at it...there is another D. for sale in Elmhurst...it's
on Spring Rd. by York High School off of St. Charles Rd.
It's parked in front of an "auto bath" place. i checked it out one day. Fully
refurbished i believe...automatic...original engine...owner is asking
$15,000.
