Friends,
I have been looking for a lowering kit for my Delorean that will not
seriously
alter the camber of the rear wheels or tensioning of the springs.
Francis at
Delroean Motor Center has his car lowered all the way around and evenly.
That
would suit me best. I have seen a lot of Deloreans with bad camber and
wish to
buy a quality kit. Also, where is the rattle from the exhaust that I hear
at
2,800 r.p.m. The car has to be warm for me to hear it, but then it never
goes
away. Which bolt is calling for my attention?

Subject: DML: Pictures of Turbo, and stuff
I picked up my DMC from PJ Grady on Saturday.
(For those of you following the engine thread...)
Rob and I decided to run it a while the way it is. He put some valve
cleaner in the gas. I did the same thing when I got it home and put
some more gas in it.
Other than the gas mileage (and emissions) the car seems to be running
great! I cant check the mileage any more, because my spedo quit soon
after I left the shop! (I went back, but Rob was gone.. I Have to call
him this week.)
As usually... Rob, Pat, and the rest of his crew did a high quality
job. My girlfriend is happy that the doors don't whack her in the head
any more!
Anyway, Now that I got the car back, I have taken and posted the
pictures (as promised) of the turbo kit on my car. Hopefully Lee can
use them to make a air box that will solve the warm air intake problem
on the Turbo's!
In addition, I have posted 2 pictures of the outside of the car, for
those interested in the rear wing, and lowered look of the DMC.

That rattle is probably a loose baffle in the muffler.

This probably has nothing to do with the "Wedding Singer" car, but the
VIN #500 car here in Cleveland has no grill logo. It looks like there
never
was one. It has only six miles on the odometer, so I doubt the logo was
removed by a previous owner.
I know of other VINs less than 1000 which do have the logo, so I doubt it
was left off at the factory. Movies show car emblems all the time, so I
doubt there was a legal concern. Most likely the logo simply fell off or
was removed because it had been damaged.
BTW I never heard of Adam Sandler before this, but my wife says his
movies are dumb. Most of us don't want to go stag to a "chick flick," so
we DeLorean enthusiasts may have to drag our wives / dates to the
theater kicking and screaming! :-)

Something's up with that DMC grill logo. If anybody follows Back to
the Future at all, they'll notice over a period of a couple of years,
the picture featuring the front of the DeLorean on BACK TO THE FUTURE
THE RIDE, first had the DMC logo when it first opened at Universal
Studios Flordia. Now if you see a picture of a DeLorean for the
BTTF ride, you'll notice that the DMC logo on the car is completely
gone. Before it was completely gone though, there was point where
it seemed to be faded and hard to read if you didn't know what you
were looking at.
Who knows!!

By the way, Adam Sandler is of Saturday Night Live fame. If you want
to see more of his stupidity, check out 'Happy Gilmore' or 'Billy
Madison' at your local video store. That should tell you or not if
you want to spend $8.00 for 'The Wedding Singer.'

Does anyone know the best places to position jack stands under a
delorean?
Will the four jacking locations support the weight without damaging the
fibreglass? I'm concerned about placing them under the frame in case they
crack the epoxy. Any insights from anyone would be appreciated.

Well I have just finished the complete rebuild of my coolent system and
man
did I ever underestimate the time and effort required for this job. I
bought the rebuild kit from DMC Houston and it came with every hose, clamp
( stainless steel ) gasket and "O" rings required for the job. I highly
recomend this purchase if you still have your original hoses. Thanks to
Warren and Steve for all the advice they gave me. There advice makes the
purchase more valuable. Also during the job I had broken a bolt on the
block and after a few select words and some target practice with my tools
I
requested help from this news forum. The results I received were very
helpfull and made it possible for me to correct the broken bolt and get my
D running again. Special thanks to Steve Brodsky and Warren. ( Also
Steve
only lives a couple of miles away. Small world ) One last thanks to
James
" Iron Hand " Espey. This list has made all our cars more valuable and
keeps the DeLorean community together. It is good for the owners. the
numerous asssociations and the DeLorean parts vendors.

Just a caveat to all of you other owners. My Delorean ignition has always
required a
bit more insertion force with the key than most other cars. I assume they
are all
that way. It must be spring loaded or something. My other car, a 95 Ford
Probe has a
similar design, a very snug fitting key, and I think that may have
contributed to a
problem I've had with that car: A couple days ago, I shut off the Probe
and pulled
out the key, and to my horror, only half came out. The key just got weak
and broke
off. The locksmith couldn't do a darn thing. The car needed to be towed,
the entire
steering column disassembled and the ignition cylinder replaced and
rekeyed. Total
bill, over $350! If this were to have happened to my DeLorean, I'm sure I
would be in
even a worse mood than I am right now. Please pay attention to your keys,
and don't
keep using worn out ones, especially if they are as old as the car.

I know that the Delorean engine is very similar to if not identical to a
2.8
Volvo engine of similar years. Later Volvo 2.8 V6 engines (1987-1990)
were
equipped with true electronic fuel injection (in lieu of the K-jetronic).
Will the intake manifold from one of these later engines bolt onto the
Delorean engine? I know that there are other issues such as the
computer, but
I can handle that. I just need to know if the later intake ports on the
heads
changed location or if the intake manifold bolts are in different
positions.

Hi Shawn,
I have never heard of the Hummm myth, an interesting Idea. You may be
aware
that the DMC is made with a Stainless skin on a plastic body with a huge
Aluminium engine, which are connected by copper. This combination in the
presents of heat can be a bi-metal electric device and can create as much
as 4 volts in electrical potential difference. I would think that if a
person happened to be sensitive to electric current and became a ground
this might "Feel" like the car was Humming on a hot sunny day.....all mine
used to do was over heat?

You have nothing to worry about! I'm going way out on a limb here, but
I'll bet there is not one single DeLorean that has ever ended up in an
ordinary "junkyard" anywhere in the world.
Based on the conversations on this list, there seems to be a lot of
DeLorean restoration going on these days. The supply is not in danger
of disappearing anytime soon.

I recently had my two new key blanks (created by Lee Seiler and discussed
here previously) cut to fit my car. I had one cut by my local hardware
store and another by a professional locksmith. The difference is
phenomenal! The key cut by a professional locksmith works flawlessly,
while the key cut by the hardware store requires a bit of "playing" with
to get it to work. Your mileage may vary, but I *highly* recommend
having the key cut by a professional, preferably using an original cut
key as a guide.

To cover Mike's point first, I know firsthand of at least one DeLorean in
a wrecking yard here in Phoenix. It sits up on top of a building as a
sign of sorts for the yard - good side facing out, of course.
Also, as moderator I catch some flak occasionally about posting messages
like the one from the 13 year old wanting a DeLorean. I remember when I
was about that age, and the DeLorean had just been introduced. I spent
many an afternoon and weekend making a nuisance of myself at the local
DeLorean dealer.
The young enthusiasts of today need their enthusiasm nurtured, and their
appreciation for DeLoreans encouraged. The 13 year old of today is the 30
year old of the future who will be buying the $40K (or more) DeLoreans.

To anyone out there,
Does anyone have, or know of anyways to change or upgrade the engine
performance besides going turbo? Any modifications that will not damage
or
hurt the engine? They do it for alot of other cars and engines on the
market.
By way of tweaking, or upgrading componets, changing of ignition chips,
electronic modules, spark plugs, coils, exhaust and/or intake componets,
etc.
Any takers out there with solid experience or knowledge???

There will be a lot of DeLoreans left. There is an international
club "The DeLorean Owners Association" that was formed, and is very
active in providing tech. information, service facilities, etc. to
help to maintain the cars as they get older. Good luck!!

Hey list,
My problem with the engine still continues.... It starts fine but
it
starts to stall when I start to push the gas pedal too far. It idles at
1000
RPMs, but as I tap the gas pedal it goes up to 1800 RPMs. And when I
spray
starting fluid into the diaphram and press the gas it starts to backfire
at
about 2500 to 3000 RPMs. This backfire is so bad, that when I was
tapping
the gas pedal, a jogger was running past my house as it backfired and she
ducked as if there was a gun shot, she had a headset on and she still
heard
it. My dad thinks the timing has to be adjusted but my brother thinks
that
its something to do with the fuel injection. I was wondering if anyone
on the
list has ever had this problem and how they fixed it. Thanks.

The reason DeLoreans hummm is related to their battery drain problem.
DeLoreans use a large number of diodes in their "innovative" wiring
system. Diodes are used to allow current flow in only one direction.
One
example of their use on the D is to allow the door light switches to turn
on the interior lights, but prevent the dome light switches from turning
on
the door lights. Well, life is not perfect, diodes have "leakage"
(especially in a D), and a lots of diodes means lots of leakage, so the
battery has a constant slow drain through these leakage paths. Since
diode
leakage is directly proportional to temperature, the leakage is worse on
hot, sunny days. Enough leakage can cause fan motors, solenoids, or
radios
to hummm. Another common use of diodes is to convert AC to DC using a
circuit called a Bridge. Anyone want to buy a bridge?

I am not sure this means much but there was a DeLorean Model made about 8
years ago by a Japanese firm. It was the Stock DeLorean with all the
extras.
Also regarding the online ordering of the models referenced earlier, that
was for the BTTF model. I have found an address for another company
currently making DeLorean models on an special order basis. I will
contact
them as the address is at work.

I am reading a book I got at the Library, it's called DeLorean: Stainless
steel Illusion, by John Lamm. It's a big book, full of pictures, 160
pages and tells the whole story from just the man, prototypes, and the
aftermath. I really like this book. I'm looking into buying a DeLorean
and this tells me alot about the performance ratings and specs. Hope that
this helps your query. :)

As one who has organized and participated in a number of "over-the-road"
convoys, let me tell you that it is an unforgettable experience. Comments
received at filling stations, diners and other stops are priceless. Many
of us have CB's in our cars and the comments of the truckers as 6 - 15
DeLoreans pass them are real entertainment.
Wish I could join you, but on June 15 I will be in Seattle joining another
convoy. Instead of DeLoreans it will be 1000 bicyclists going 3000+ miles
from Seattle to Washington DC. Now, THAT's a convoy!!

Don't ever squirt starting fluid into a running engine unless you want
to disassemble it rapidly. It will take out the top of a piston or blow
a head gasket in a heartbeat. Your backfire may have damaged your air
flow sensor because the vane is designed to move in one direction only.
The main ingredient of starting fluid is Ether. Ether evaporates at
very low temperatures and starting fluid is designed to start very cold
engines (usually below zero F.) when gasoline does not evaporate
easily. When the vapor is ignited it burns so rapidly that it explodes.
Since your engine will idle, but not run when the throttle is opened
sounds like not enough fuel. Does the engine run normally when is is
warmed up to normal operating temperature? What is your fuel
pressure? Backfires are usually caused by too lean a mixture, but the
ether could cause one too.
The timing does not change overnight and since it starts and idles
normally, chances are that it's not the problem.
Things that could affect low fuel flow:
Plugged fuel pickup filter in tank
Collapsed fuel pickup line in the tank
Fuel pump, plugged inlet or bad pump
Plugged fuel filter
(the above can be easily checked by measuring pressure and fuel flow)
Fuel injector system (something you don't want to tackle yourself)

I wouldn't count on it. JZD is old, sick, and very broke. I don't think
it will
ever happen. The same rumors are still around Malcom Bricklin, saying he
is going to build another car. Never will happen. Anyway, The DOT put
laws into effect after DMC and prohibits any manufacturer from building
another Stainless Steel car. Way too much glare from the sun.

This is the first time I've heard of this. Not to doubt Brandon, but I'm
skeptical. Look how many truck trailers - oil, milk, dry cargo, etc. -
are
made of stainless steel and they are often even polished, making them much
more reflective than our DeLoreans. Has anyone else heard of this DOT
ruling?

The other component to the explosion is air. If not enough air enters
the chamber the mix is wrong and the fuels doesn't completely combust.
The leftover fuel will sometimes ignite under compression causing the
backfire.

There is supposedly another car being built for the 1999 model year. It
is
not another Stainless Steel car, nor is it supposed to be a rear engine
car. I read a transcript from the Detroit Press interviewing John Z.
DeLorean. In it he tells a little bit about the new car. It will weigh
1400 lbs. have a 340 or an optional 450 horsepower engine. One model will
be Gull-wing doors while the other will be a soft top convertible.. Other
that than that the rest is up in the air. I heard that the cost was
supposed to be under $20,000.00 for the Gull but in the interview John
said
that was preposterous.

I've worked for Ford for 33 years and this is a new one on me! The
closest
thing to a real, new model DeLorean that I'm aware of was a car called the
Isdora. It was a one off gull winged car featured in a couple of auto
magazines in the mid 80's. The suspension was from Porsche and the
mid-mounted V-8 engine was from Mercedes. The body was not made of
stainless steel. John DeLorean and another fellow, who's name escapes me,
tried to get the state of Louisiana to invest in a plant to assemble the
car there from components produced in Europe. There were a number of
reasons the deal never happened but it was the closest thing to a "real"
car that DeLorean has had a connection with since the demise of DMC. I
might be able to find the names and dates of the magazines that mentioned
this via the computor archives at work if anyone is interested. The
archives have no pictures and only VERY brief summarries of auto related
news.

This is really interesting subject, does any one have access to the DOT
data base? I would like to read it. The "RAD" is 100% right about
stainless on the road, We are near the Chevron refinery, and I see
polished stainless tankers every day. I have danced with the idea of
having my polished out to a chrome like finish! Now I am really
interested.......
