As my last posting explained in detail, you are INCORRECT about the problems with my car.
You did not do your homework, and apparently did not even read my last response to you.

<SNIP>

Again, So what?  I choose not to participate in the Concours event.  Do you think you have exposed some dark deep secret about me?!

I'm not quite sure why the DML moderating team is allowing your "flame" posts to continue.  I am sure all intelligent readers of the DML, weather they agree or disagree with my opinions, can clearly see from YOUR posts that your goals are simply to cause trouble.  We still have yet to see anything other than personal attacks from you.  Will we ever see anything legitimate from you?  Or will you keep playing your anonymous games?

The paragraph above have no relevance on the discussion of the Concours event.  Do you want to start talking about DeLoreans at some point?  And you complain about Jim and David being irrelevant!

How's the weather in the bay area?

Walter, With just normal fuel screen and fuel in the tank. I think you just
have a noisy fuel pump. The rollervane bearings under pressure of the normal
pumping system may be bad be getting stressed. Is the fuel pressure on the
car correct and the return to tank OK?

Regarding the recent barbs being thrown around concerning a certain
competition.  I am of the opinion that the majority of us are here to help
one another and have some fun.  There are times when comments of this nature
come across as less than helpful but in most case that does not seem to be
the intent.  The current round seems to go far beyond an accidental misuse
of language and appears very personal in nature.

I respectfully request that the moderators adopt a policy in which any
posting that comes across as a personal attack be returned to the sender for
reconsideration or out right rejected.  In the case where the sender does
not provide a return email address the issue becomes moot since it could not
be returned for reconsideration.

I am not saying that we can't disagree with opinions or statements given
here but I do believe there are ways we can disagree without being hateful.
This current round seem to go way beyond any boundary of a proper way to
treat one another.

[MODERATOR NOTE: Because 1983 DeLoreans do present a unique situation not faced by any other marque, their Concours status is an important and legitimate topic of discussion.  I urge interested DMLers to participate in the dedicated discussion at: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/millennium-concours/    -Mike Substelny, DML moderator of the week]

Just a minor point, when did DeLorean 'manufacture' a 1983 car?  I
always thought the manufacturing ended in 1982 with the bankruptcy and the
1983 label on the DeLorean was a ploy to sell the remaining inventory of
completed 1982 cars and parts/assemblage of line cars as a "1983 DeLorean"
or though title issuance by the purchaser of the bankruptcy materials
(stamping on the door date).  Judging would be based on 1982 or as assembled
by Consolidate I would think.  Is there any need to purport a 1983 DeLorean
production run or classification even exists?  Maybe I'm missing something
here?  No negative implications are implied to '1983 DeLorean' owners, maybe
they should be classified as 'Consolidated DeLorean's'?  Don't everyone
start yelling at me now...

Subject: Re: for the record and end this thread

It seems that Fatboy has gotten a number of people riled online

Lets see if I can put this in perspective and hopefully everyone will end
this once and for all.

All points of view considered please consider the following:

There are probably few true concours shows in the world and if there were
there isn't enough time in the world to dedicate the time at a single event
to detail every nut bolt and fastener in a car.  I attend the annual Concours
d'Elegance in Cincinnati which is a major event covering all types of vintage
cars with thousands of people and I would have to say we as DeLorean owners
do a better job when it comes to judging.

The reason we put on an event like this is to distinguish between the average
cars and above average cars.  Hopefully some of us (myself included) will
keep these cars in the condition they need to be for future generations to
enjoy.

No surprise,
I put on a show as I am sure fatboy does as well or has some influence on a
car show somewhere if not the DOA.
I have participated in two Concours events with the DOA and have enjoyed
both.  One was by Ed and his group (Nashville) and the other was with Stephen
and his group in St Louis.  I was pleased with both.

Now for my point
The DOA had no problems using DMC for their concours and neither do I.

And for the record in response to fatboy I do not choose judges or even
suggest them.  I leave that to whomever I hire to run the concours.  I have
enough to do.  As a matter of fact I also hire out the Daily Driver judging
to two current ISCA officials.  They run it as they see fit period.  The rule
changes reflect their opinions and the input to them from DeLorean owners.
Marty and his group took the input and did a nice job of defining the
catagories with the approval of the judges.  Thank you Marty.

Fact is DMC has the best product on the market right now and what we do is to
go and evaluate as much detail as we can in a short amount of time.
People that have these cars like myself enjoy it Bottom Line.

The rules have changed over the years and will continue to do so.
The first show I did in Cincinnati we used ISCA official judges both of whom
had judged DeLoreans before and are very technical and are certified.  As
good as it was I felt that DMC did a better job and I would make the same
claim for the DOA. Not to say on that would have changed the results any.

My criteria on judging is that the best car should win in each catagory.  The
judges do their best and that is all I can ask.  This holds true for concours
and Daily drivers.
Model judging  this year will be the real challenge LOL

I believe as fatboy says that the rules have progressed over the years so
maybe this will be the best concours ever.  GIVE IT A CHANCE.
The rules for this years daily driver has changed to make it more
understandable and to take into account cars like Curtis, the Tow Truck, time
Machine and the New D-REX.  Change is inevitable so let it change with the
times.

NO ONE HAS ANYTHING BETTER and the idea of standardizing an event and saying
here is the rules and here is what we are going to judge for is fine.

I go into each show with my car knowing that  8 points will be deducted. (hex
bolts in the trunk, no deadpedal and a kill switch.  I know that and I accept
that. If I had changed that I would have placed higher I believe in both of
the events I entered.  It does not make my car better or worse for what I own
it for (my pleasure).

When something better comes along I am sure we will adopt it.
As of now The DMC set of rules is good enough for the DOA, good enough for
Houston,  good enough for Eurofest, and its good enough for me and I thank
those doing it for relieving me of the hours of work and preparation it
takes.

I also believe the DOA version as it was in Nashville was done well and I
would probably have asked them to help me in Cleveland if DMC had not
offered.

My thanks to those who over the years have provided us with as much
information as we have.  In a car like ours there are some areas that may
never be answered so we just have to deal with it.

Now please kill this thread.

Lets move on to something else
I am going to Memphis to have fun

Ken

be a in a position financially to purchase a D in the not too distant
future.  I was looking at the D1 and DMC Houston web sites at their
refurbished D's...needless to say, the $30k price gap left me wondering a
bit.  Has anyone purchased a refurbished D from either place and if so,
are you satisfied with your purchase?  I'd be very interested to hear

Thank you for your considered judgment, espritdescalier and facts about
the Concours d'Elegance.

Additionally, I'll be away on a business trip to Tokyo, Japan and Seoul,
Korea for the month of April. I plan to attend the New Jersey spring social
without a DeLorean due to time constraints.  However, I would be delighted to
discuss your car & my car, together in the future over a glass of Blanc DE

In addition, You are very knowledgeable about the DeLorean. I sincerely
appreciate your sophisticated approach to the matter at hand.  I can only
assume that your DeLorean is pristine? Are you the original owner?
Please excuse my inquiries. I must say that your knowledge is remarkably
esoteric and uncanny.

Group,

I rarely get involved in the type of discussion going on about the
Concours events but I'm tired of listening to people B*tch and Moan on
this list! I thought this list was intended for information and the
exchange of knowledge concerning our cars.

If conversations like these must exist, they need to be done privately
and not on the list.  Why don't you just meet at 12:00 high on the
streets of Memphis and have it out, then we can get on with the
business of enjoying our DeLoreans and keeping them in top notch
condition with the aid of our fellow group members!  My delete button

Fat Boy:

Your opinions about me and my cars are of no importance to me or
probably anyone else on this list. My cars are for my enjoyment, not
yours. Don't confuse me with anyone else on this list; you don't know
me, and don't know my capabilities. I have no fear of competition in
concours, and I do own a Delorean -  The fact that I over restored
my '57 TBird was meant to be an example - I don't apologize for
trying to do the job correctly. After reading the judging sheet, my
attitude was "at least I know what was wrong, and can correct it". I
didn't challenge the competency of the judges, and argue with the
rules - I fixed it!

You, on the other hand are what we used to call a "leg". You talk a
good fight, and enjoy verbal gymnastics but when the real battle
starts you will retreat from the scene in your Yugo, and go back to
your imaginary kingdom. You aren't qualified to critique anyone at
anytime on anything, you're a legend in your own mind.

Darren,

You asked:
"Or is it that no matter what, a cat (hollow or not) may still
damage surrounding parts b/c of generated heat?  Just wondering....."

Core or no core the normal operation of the catalytic converter will not
damage the epoxy frame coating. The main purpose of the converter heat
shield is to reduce the likelihood of starting a fire if parked above a pile
of dry leaves.

Walt,

I would have never guessed the fuel in the tank could reach 118
Degrees - that's almost unbelieveable. I would offer this guess:

Make certain none of the fuel return lines are being "pre-heated" by
the coolant lines. It seems to me this could would be a possibility
of transferring heat, if a line were positioned too close or in the
wrong place near a hot coolant line.

There could be several reasons for the fuel to get hot.
1) You are in a hot climate
2) there is a problem with the pressure regulater set too high causing
the fuel to heat up as it circulates in the system.
3) when the tank is low the fuel will get hotter as there is less fuel
to dissapate the heat into.
4) air leak in the pick-up hose.
To solve the heat and possibly the pump noise problem at the same time
would be to try to keep more fuel in the tank. When the pump is
submerged in fuel it is much quieter and will run cooler. If you think
the filters are a restriction just try running without them for a
short time and see if things are better. It is very easy when
installing the pump into the tank to slighly turn it causing the
pick-up line to kink, this could happen even with a spring inside the
hose so be very careful as you install the pump. A pinhole or tear in
the hose will cause an air leak causing a noisy pump and probably
contributing to hotter than normal fuel. If these problems go away as
you keep the tank full then you know what you will have to do.

I know that PJ Grady sells a non-asbestoes replacement that looks
almost exactly like the origional. When removing the old one just try
not to make any dust or shake any pieces loose and immediatly place in
a sealable plastic bag. Double bag it. Dispose of properly, many
states have a hazardous pick-up site that you can take it to. You can
also buy a heat wrap tape to wrap the exhaust pipe where it goes over
the transmission which is especially useful on an automatic to prevent
exessive heat on the trans. The heat shield is needed on the converter
especially if for some reason the engine runs too rich that thing can
start to glow red hot! There is also a heat shield on the muffler that
can be replaced.

Removing and replacing the steering wheel does not require an
alignment unless after replacing the steering wheel it is not in the
"straight ahead" position when going straight ahead. In that case you
do not need a full alignment, just a centering adjustment and possibly
a toe in check. It can be done yourself just as long as whatever
adjustment you do on one side you do on the other (opposite) to the
tie rod ends on the steering rack linkage. If you are unsure about it
getting a good 4 wheel alignment is good insurance for handling and
the life of the tires. Have them balance the tires at the same time
and you will notice a much better ride.

"FatBoy" was only mentioned ONCE before past Wednesday March 27

true. In fact you haven't really said anything; you've just been
too busy putting other people down. It's logical thet you would
assume a new identity to flame on people; you probably haven't
got the nerve to stand up and say what you think in public.
There's only one word for this, no actually two:
Childish and Cowardly.

I will not get involved in the discussion on the Concours regulations,
since I do not have a car that's concours worthy, nor will it ever be.
"If you don't play the game, don't mess with the rules".
I read the DML to learn end enjoy, which I still do, every day...
I like the idea behind the concours and think of it as a great hobby
for people, just as modifying my DeLorean is part of my hobby.
But that's it: A HOBBY.

Now, can we please get back to the helping and learning part
of this list? Everyone seems so involved in this concours-thing
that the real questions allmost go by unnoticed...
There's a separate list for Concours-discussions for a good reason...

Hey folks,
I don't post often, but figured a thanks should go out to the
moderator(s) for the tireless work they do to help those who can't help
themselves.
I'm a member of several lists of different topics and they all have
'interesting smells' from time to time,
-but none are as well moderated as this DML.
I can't imagine reading EVERY post and fixing things and providing
insightful and explanatory comments when needed.
A thankless job- until now.
THANK YOU!
See y'all at Elvis' place.

Some of you have brought up some good points.  After filling my tank today
at one of the newer Amoco stations in town, I started hearing a screeching
sound that I thought before was my a/c blower.  This time it lasted long
enough that I was able to switch of the a/c and still hear it.  So it wasn't
the a/c blower.  I figure the only things left are the radiator fans and the
fuel pump.  I suppose it is the fuel pump, and this one was from PJ Grady
and has only a few thousand miles on it.  I'm going to check my fuel
pressures and check the flow through the return line.  I didn't think to try
that before.

For David T,
> 1) You are in a hot climate

Yes, very.

> 2) there is a problem with the pressure regulator set too high causing
> the fuel to heat up as it circulates in the system.

I'll check that. Good idea.

> 3) when the tank is low the fuel will get hotter as there is less fuel
> to dissipate the heat into.

Yes, but it can still get noisy at 1/2 a tank.

> 4) air leak in the pick-up hose.

Not likely because I still have symptoms while the whole hose is submerged
in fuel.

For Eric P.,
Remember that both the supply & return coolant lines pass under the fuel
tank.  In fact, the tank has indentations on either side for the coolant
pipes to fit.  This is probably one of the more significant sources of heat
in the fuel.  I'm thinking about replacing the sections of aluminum pipe
here with long pieces of silicone radiator hose just for general principles.
I don't like my fuel being 118F even if it doesn't make my pump noisy.  Even
if I do have a restriction causing heat build-up, changing the aluminum to
silicone is probably a good idea anyway.

For John H,
Except for the recent screeching sounds, this pump is as noisy as the one
that came with the car.  So I suspect that the problem isn't the pump and
more than likely just hot fuel for whatever reason.  You live in a hotter
climate than I do, so have you noticed noisy pumps with hot fuel?

Subject: Re: catalytic heat shield

A catalyic converter works by allowing the escaping gasses to get super-hot while being
filtered through a catalyst to remove the nasty components in the gasses. Remember
chemistry at school? Heating a substance with a catalyst causing a reaction that entirely
unaffects the catalyst.... or something like that :-)

Anyway, the catalyst works by getting hot. Replacing the cat with a simple pipe will stop
it getting as hot, but a heat shield to protect the epoxy is still probably a good idea
(certainly won't do any harm). Epoxy has a superb heat resistance, but 20 year old epoxy
which was layered too thick originally (as some accounts state) is probably more likely
to crack if constantly being heated and cooled.

Last summer members of the DeLorean Club of Ohio drove to London, Ontario.  We spent a
very long time waiting in line at the Canadian border with our engines and air
conditioners running.  None of us overheated or broke down, but by the time we got into
Canada *all* of our fuel pumps were screaming.

This was particularly interesting to me because my car had a *brand* *new* fuel pump,
with almost no miles on it.  I had just acquired the pump from one of the major vendors,
and it was professionally installed by DeLorean Cadillac here in Cleveland.

Subject: NCT Tires for sale

DeLorean Enthusiasts,

I have a set of the original Goodyear NCT tires for sale.  The front and rear tires are in excellent shape with plenty of tread still left on the tires.  The sidewalls are perfect on all four.  There are however some minor, minor cracks between some of the treads on the rear tires.  These tires still have plenty of life left in them and would make a great item to help restore any delorean to it's original condition.

I would much rather keep them, but I do not go to a lot of shows where originality counts and would rather let some other enthusiast use them to complete their car than have them rot in my basement.

I am not sure how much they are worth, but I know that you will not be able to find these tires in this good of condition just about anywhere.  If interested, please email me at Jimbo0946@xxxxxxx  I will be able to take pictures of them shortly.

Hugo,
CV boots are a piece of cake compared with some other repair jobs on the
DeLorean. Order the boots, all four of them from your DeLorean dealer ahead
of time. Do the job right the first time. Put the car up on jack stands,
remove all of the little bolts on both ends of each axle, and give a tug on
the axle and they pop right out. Take apart each end one at a time, wash
them up in solvent, blow or wipe dry, apply new grease and reassemble new
boot. Turn axle around and do the other end. Give the axle a new coat of
paint and reinstall. Make sure to torque the bolts, don't remember the spec.

Also check the oil seals in the main carrier, if these are leaking now is
the time to change them also.
