Subject: Strange Noise and belt problem

Well Have I had an interesting weekend or what?  After I put my Delco
alternator back in (had to get a bolt tightend and voltage regulator
replaced)  I noticed a squealing noise comming from the engine when the
alternator was under heavey load  (A/c max blower 4) It would only make
this noise in idle or low gears.  When I took the car to the Alternator
repair shop to ask what they though the noise was, the man assured me that
it was not the Alternator, but that the belt was not tight enough.  Sure
enoguht, I got a crow bar, tightened the belt, and had no problems for the
rest of the day.  The next morning I got the same noise.  The belt felt
loose again, but the tensioner was still at the same place.  I tightened it
to max and the noise went away that time as well.  Last night, I was
driving home, and all the sudden, my voltage went to 0, and as I was
turning on my road, I watched my temperature guage rise like a rabbid jack
rabbit.  I made it home on a GUll-wing and a prayer, immediately shut off
the car, and watched the gallons of coolant and smoke spew out.  After it
cooled down I went out with a flashlight, and noticed that there was no
Alternator/Water pump belt.  I also noticed a lot of black dust by the belt
drive pulley. ( where the belt was suppsed to be)I had noticed this black
dust before, when the belt was there, but paid not attention to it.  The
belt did not simply fall off, it disintegrated.  What caused this to
happen? I was a new belt.
Thanks

Even though the books say the ECU units are not repairable, I have
been successful in repairing two of them. What would be a big help is
a wiring diagram of the ECU units of the De Lorean. Bosch #0-280-220-
009. I would be eternally grateful.Does any one know how to get your
hands on this from Bosch.I have all the chips and components but
nothing as far as a diagram or explanation of what the voltages are
internally. If you would rather email privately, then please do so.

What happened to you is not rare. One of the idler pulley bearings
seized up and broke the belt. They are easily replaced and put in a
new belt. If you didn't overheat the motor too much you should be
alright.

Joe,

Replace the belt and do the following. Prior to installing the new belt check to be sure that the alternator pulley rotates freely by hand, next install the new belt. Check to be sure that the belt is not making contact with any of the alternator attachment bolts. Be sure not to over-tighten the tension on the belt. After your adjustment push down on the belt midway between the alternator and water pump pulleys, Minimum deflection should be no less than 1/2 inch.

Possible causes of your belt failure could be over-tensioning. If the belt is too tight it could overheat and disintegrate. It is also possible that you may have a defective belt. If the belt was purchased from us will be happy to send you a free replacement.

David,

Joe's problem is not related to the AC belt, therefore it is unlikely that the Idler pulley had any influence on the alternator belt failure.

Another thing you may want to check are the blades on the alternator
belt. If the are bent out too far they will slowly cut into the belt.
Fit the new alternator belt into place and tighten it up enough that
you are still able to turn the alternator itself by hand. Make sure
that the blades do not touch the belt as you rotate them. If they do,
you'll need to bend them back only slightly. When replacing the
alternator belt use only either one from a parts supplier or the belt
the Pep-Boys sells. While the Kelly-Springfield crossover is the
correct length and appears identical to the original it's not. The
K/S belt is too wide at the top and doesn't seat properly into the
pully's.

Subject: Re: Re: Strange Noise and belt problem

This cannot be correct as there are no idler pulleys involved with the
alternator/water pump belt.  It could be that the water pump or the
alternator seized up, bad belt (even though it is new), or bad alignment
between the three pulleys wearing the belt away.  The reason for the fluids
all over the ground is possibly due to the belt (when it finally came apart)
cutting one or more of the coolant tubes - you should thoroughly look over
the system before going out on the road again.  Check the alignment between
the pulleys - I'll bet they are ok.  Check the water pump and alternator (by
hand) to see if they are locked or have unusual amounts of resistance.  My
money is on the belt being poorly.

If you need any help, let me know and I will come out there and give you a
hand.

Any suggestions on what to look for or check?

Hello

I was wondering if anyone knew, if he DeLorean was the only machine/vehicle
to use the size of the gas struts on the doors, louvres, and trunk.

This my be an extremely long stretch, but do you think that maybe the gas
strut size is the same on like a tractor? I guess it's possible, but I doubt
it. I will probably be ordering the set of six from DMC Houston.

Michael,

Well I don't have a set to sell, but the letters come with double sided tape
on the back, and as far as I have been able to ascertain, if placed
correctly (i.e. not placed, then removed to realign and replaced) will last
a very, very long time.  I got my set from DeLorean One when I first got my
