With very nice DeLoreans going for $18-$20,000 why would anyone want to pay
$8-$10,000 for a dog that requires another $12,000 to bring it into shape?
That's why many lesser cars are passed up when someone is searching for a
DeLorean. At the moment there are enough nice DeLoreans around so market is
satisfied. This means the only option for unloading the dog is to make the
price too good to pass up. It's supply and demand. There's enough $20,000
cars around for those willing to spend that amount. When there isn't enough,
people will be willing to spend the money to restore the neglected ones.

To our DML Membership:
As many of you know I have been making De Lorean Logo top keys for
any one
who wanted them. This was just something I did in my spare time and more or
less at cost. I went to the trouble of getting the bear metal blanks from
the same company that produced the original De Lorean Keys. My key efforts
have been any thing but a business, not $10 each.
Over the past year I have replaced many sets of keys that did not
work,
usually due to the local lock smith cutting the combination wrong, There
have been other problems, like bounced checks, claims that the keys never
showed up, and those who in spite of getting a photograph of the keys I
make demanding refunds because the claimed the keys I delivered were the
wrong kind. In every case I replaced the keys at no cost to the purchaser.
Over the last 6 months I have posted many time that I only do keys
one day
a month. Apparently people who still want keys expect me to just drop
every thing and make keys for them. Well thats not happening.
As of now I am no longer going to make De Lorean keys, If you have
ordered
keys and I have not shipped them, and you can wait until I get around it,
then you will get your keys. If you just can't wait let me know and I will,
as always, refund your $22.50 in kind. I will also send your keys if they
are already made to you with your refund, Cut into interesting shaped parts.
As far as I ma concerned any one who wants keys can try the guy in
England
who gets $75 each.

I don't know, but there were two models built for the movies for use in
motion control effects. There was also another one built for The Ride.
These DeLoreans are 30 inches in length, and cost Universal roughly
$15,000 each to build. I'll put pictures of these models up as soon as I
get them.

I've owned both the automatic and a manual DeLorean. While this doesn't
make me an expert, it does give a perpective not all can share.
The automatic has two problems. The first is the reliability problem which
is almost solely due to the computer governor. You can put a transmission
cooler on the car (I did) and this helps a lot. I had put two computers on
the car prior to the cooler (done at 47,000 miles) and none after that (I
drove it for nearly 100,000 miles).
THe other problem is that the performance sucks.Here you sit in this
beautifully designed car and VW Beetles (the old ones with 40 HP) beat you
across the street.
If you are looking for a boulevard cruiser and have no intentions of EVER
driving it like a sports car, the automatic, with the transmission cooler,
should be fine. Otherwise, the manual 5-speed is the only way to fly.

First, I noticed last night that my interior lights came and went off =
when they "felt like it"; even when the doors were both shut and locked. =
Any solution?=09
Second, when I have my heater on the hot position, and the dial is in =
bi-level, cold air blows on my feet while warm air blows out the vents. =
But when I put it on heater mode (exclusively on my feet), warm air then =
blows on my feet. Why is there cold air on my feet when in the bi-level =
position?=20

It's not that automatics are bad it's just that the Delorean is an
enthusiasts car. Most enthusiasts prefer manual transmissions therefore
the manuals are in higher demand thus causing the lower price for the
automatics.

Fellow DMCer's,
While looking at a friends D (Vin# 02378) I noticed a different coloring to
the fascia panel (part # 105186). The fan speed numbers are trimmed in
green.
There were some other areas different (green trim around the different
symbols) from my D (vin #06569). I checked the parts manual and it states
that
the fascia panel was changed after vin # 1963. Parts manual list #'s 105186
and # 108920. My question is how many of you have the green trimmed fascia
panels and what is your vin's? This can be found on the Section 7/subsection
3/group 0, number of part is 35. Just when you think you know a lot about
D's
something like this makes you remember that there is much more to learn. By
the way Vin#02378 is due to have a full work over and will be back on the
road
soon. Glad to have another D driving around in TN. I'll let vin# 02378
introduce his self when his ride is ready. Welcome to the world of

Resale values of automatics vs. manuals are the same. The automatic is
strong and reliable, it's only weakness is the factory installed governor
computer. This item, which is a plug in item, is easily and inexpensively
repaired.

Well guys, we were looking at a gift horse in the mouth, so to speak. WE
just lost a good source of OEM style keys for our DeLoreans.
Thanks for all of your help and extraordinary efforts Mr Lee S.
Its too bad that people do not appreciate the amount of time and effort it
takes for someone to make these specialty items. I know that Lee should
have charged at least $50 for these, but he was just trying to help out
fellow owners.
Do not get discouraged Lee. I sure hope that we can meet in St Louis this
Sept '99.

Hi Bruce!,
While I am not in the category of those who want cheap De Loreans,
My
guess is that the reason for picking up a "beater" is for the FUN value of
restoring or fixing up the purchase.
I found mounting my own seat covers, changing or installing my own
new
short front springs, Tearing out and installing new rear calipers, was once
I got over the fear of doing such jobs, it was really fun and very
satisfying.
Remember that there are people who don't have any interest in doing
any
kind of car maintence and those who are not happy unless something is wrong
and needs fixing.
As to the rest I tend to agree with your view.

I went to my first Marde Gras Parade today. It was a lot of fun. For those
of you who do not know, Madres Gras parades/celebrations started in Mobile
in the 1830's, before New Orleans.
The reason I bring this up is I was thinking, wouldn't it be great to
participate with a bunch of DeLoreans in the parade. Of course we would
have to wear costumes and throw beads and moon pies.
We could be the Crewe of the Future.
Does anyone else have any thoughts about this idea.
Is it a good one?
Does it suck?

Not if you're the sort of person that likes automatic transmissions. I
think the low value of that car was due to the fact that it didn't run,
rather than the type of transmission.
Personally, I hate automatic transmissions (and power steering ;) ) and
can't imagine why anyone would want a car equipped with one, unless they
just didn't know how to drive a manual transmission. The way I see it, if
you can't steer, shift, operate the clutch, brakes, accelerator, hold
breakfast, adjust the radio, talk on a cell phone, and shave (or, if
female, apply makeup) all at the same time, then you obviously don't have
enough limbs. Hang up and drive. :} But a guy who used to work at the
same company I did and I were discussing the relative merits of the
DeLorean and came to transmissions.
He said "I wouldn't want a manual transmission. To me, the DeLorean is a
luxury car, and a luxury car should have an automatic transmission." He
also didn't like clutches, on the principle that major mechanical
drivetrain components shouldn't be designed to wear out with time. :}
I on the other hand, think of the DeLorean as a sports car with an air
conditioner, and a sports car should have a 5-speed manual transmission.
The DeLorean automatic transmission does have some trouble with the
governor computer, and the evidence is that it is less reliable than the
5-speed. But it's not "terrible" especially for the time period. It's
still a 3-speed auto transmission and will decrease your performance
correspondingly.
Either sort of car is going to have comparable collector value and about
half were made with either transmission type.

The problem with the auto appears to be mostly that the transmission gets
too hot and fries the computer. In addition the computer appears to be
subject to fluctuating voltages which causes premature wear. There are
oil coolers and electronic components available which cut down on these
problems and make the auto transmissions reliable.

VIN 04337, located in Central Massachusetts.
Odometer reads about 3400 miles, believed to be approx. 26K miles based
on Lambda counter, automatic, grey interior.
SS nearly perfect, very small dent in left rear w/no underbody damage.
Car was running and driving about six months ago, have not tried since.
Still has Ducellier alternator, not much work done on car after it sat in
the sun for 11 years, replaced fuel pump and flushed entire fuel system
in summer '97.
All original except for drivers' door struts.
Needs: front fascia realignment; all painted body surfaces need new
paint; moderate interior work incl. binnicle, headliner, battery
compartment cleaning, and a very good carpet cleaning; probably needs
fuel sys. attention; fixing a few electrical shorts (from mice nibbling
wires); etc.
Asking $9000.

Acceleration figures for the auto vs. the five speed are very close. If an
automatic does not push you back in your seat from a standing start there
is a problem. If you had poor acceleration in your automatic you either had
a bad computer or a malfunctioning fuel enrichment circuit.

For your interior lighting problem disconnect one of the wires leading to
your door switches and see if the problem goes away, if it does try to
isolate which door switch is causing the problem. If it's not the door
switch you bay have a defective Lamp Delay Module.
This is a common problem and is easy to fix. The only special tool required
is a long slender (human) arm. Working from the drivers foot well reach
into the opening just to the right of the accelerator pedal towards the
open space between the firewall and air plenum. With the heater on you
should feel cold air coming from that area. The source of the cold air is
an opening that should be sealed by a piece of foam rubber attached to the
air plenum. This foam seal is partially detached because the adhesive
applied at the factory has dried out.
To correct this problem do whatever is necessary to block this opening.
Because of the limited working space in this area you will probably find
that a piece of duct tape placed over the foam should correct the problem.
Another easy solution is to stuff a piece of packing foam between the
firewall and the seal.

In 1986, I went to Hollywood, California and took the Universal Studios
tour. The tour guide said that SEVEN (7) DeLoreans were used for the
filming in the movie. Some were used for driving only, others used for
interior shots only. That's what the guide said.
In 1995, I went to Orlando and went by the Universal Studios tour.
The DeLorean that was sitting outside 'the ride' was not, in my opinion,
any one of the 7 original cars used in the movie. It was obvious that
it was just another DeLorean modified to look like the other D's that
participated in the movie.
As for the DeLorean in BTF III that was destroyed...
Someone please assure me that it was a model...

I originally noticed a black gel like substance coming out of my clutch
master from where the piston goes into the dust cover. I figure since it
was not my DOT 4 fluid I didn't worry, I placed a rag in the small
indentation just in case.........
Now my car's up for the winter and not being driven. About 3 weeks ago I
noticed that my clutch pedal was soft. I checked the fluid and it was low.
I filled it with DOT4 and pumped the pedal a few times and it came back.
I haven't driven the car since as it's up for the winter. I went in it
today and the fluid is gone and the pedal goes to the floor. Luckily I had
put that rag in there. The rag caught all the fluid.
Question 1: what was the black gel like stuff?
Question2 : Since it's draining by itself while in storage is this more
serious than a shot master? I assume I will need to replace the master,
even though it was replaced not too long ago by the previous owner, but is
the self draining a common symptom of a bad master or would it be more like
a broken line?
Also, since I have no DMC repair places close here in Maine, I was
wondering if a master replacement can be handled by a competent mechanic?
Any special things to watch out for while replacing one? A local service
place, of good reputation, has replaced rusted out brake lines on 2 of my
other cars with no problem. I'm always more wary when it comes to my "D".

While you're there, something else I noticed about that scene. If you look
closely, when Marty is descending from the De on the hover board, under the
now horizontal wheel you can make out a small track wheel rotating. This
shows
that that De was a mockup on a track.

I was told that the Delorean used in part 3 was 1 of the worst out of the 5
used, it was a real Delorean and was loosened at all major parts so it would
shatter on impact. The engine and transmission were not in the car at the
time
of the impact. ALL of the parts that are left are sitting in a ware house in
one of the backlots. If you look at the film, it is easy to see that yes
these
are real Delorean pieces and not that of a model.

Previous discussion on the list seems to indicate that the car that was
destroyed was, in fact, a real DeLorean, but was almost certainly not in
running condition.
First, it had been modified to run on rails, and probably not gently. My
guess is that the steering, axles, and transmission (and probably engine)
had all been removed in order to facilitate this. Second, when the car is
hit by the train, a number of noticeable DeLorean parts come flying out.
The way in which the car comes apart (shattering rather than crumpling)
seems to indicate that the majority of the structure had been removed so
that it would fly apart nicely. Unfortunately, it looks rather detailed
to be a model. :\
