Subject: DML: Fuel distributer rebuild?

Can the fuel distributer be rebuilt?  The workshop manual says it's not
servicable, only the line pressure regulator o-rings can be changed.
Has anyone opened their distributer or have had it rebuilt by someone?
Are there seal kits for it?  I am going to change my accumulator.  If
that doesn't help, I'm going to have to suspect the fuel dist.

Subject: DML: Oh my Freezing DMC

As Homer Simpson would say  "DOH!"........I went to start up my car in the
barn today, after a -14 degree night.  The drivers side door would not
open
as I pulled the handle.  I decided not to give a real hard pull as I've
heard of the original handles breaking in cold temps.  I went to the
passenger side door and it opened, so I then reached over and got the
drivers side door open.

I started the car, which protested but with synthetic oil in it fired up.
I let it run and noticed smoke coming out of the engine compartment.  I
thought it was just exhaust smoke.....silly me.   Well, it looks like I've
got some coolant pooling up in the hidden recesses of my engine.  I
searched around and could not find the actual spot but It appears to be
comng from one of those hoses thats hard to get to.....of course.  But
there also seems to be some pooling up going on in the back of the engine
near the firewall as well.

I'm totally out of luck until warm weather comes back.  My throttle cable
is frozen so I can't move the car out of the barn and now I've got coolant
coming out of unknown areas.  I have left the drivers side door open so I
will be able to get into the car again but as for starting it up each
week,
I guess I've got a problem........Looks like I'll need to build a heated
section in my barn (yah, right!  says my wife).  

Does the PRV have freeze plugs? or other cold weather things to look out
for?  There is a sensor on a pipe on the left side with 2 clip on
connetors
that looks like it has some coolant seeping out.  Is this a bad thing? 
Let
me re-phrase...is this bad enough to think seriously about getting my car
on a flatbed and down to Rob Grady?

Heh.  I originally thought the DeLorean was made by GM too.  I remember
seeing the logo in BTTF and thinking "That's not a very good G, it looks
like a D."  :}

Relative to why there wasn't more of a Lotus drivetrain in the car...

I recall that Lotus was willing to "design-for-hire" but didn't want to
make a car that was equal or better than their own Esprit.

My PRV-V6 page gives info on the relation of the various applications of
the PRV-V6 which was and may still be used in the Venturi. P&R (Volvo
dropped out) have a new joint-venture V6, the ESL9, a 194HP 24 valve unit
used in the Peugeot 406 etc.

Is the racing stripe black with a DMC logo, if so, it is not painted on.

Tom,
Yes, the engine does have freeze plugs. Water pooling under the intake
manifold may indicate a leak of one of the rear water pump hoses. The leak
at the sensor under the clip (cooling fan switch) would require
replacement
of the seal, (easy and inexpensive). Here is what I suggest, got to your
local auto supply or even the auto department of Kmart and purchase a
bottle of "Bars Stop Leak", add it to your cooling system per the
directions. This should stop all of the
minor leaks for the remainder of the cold weather season. When spring
arrives bring your "D" to Grady's for a cooling system maintenance
procedure.

Hi Tom,

My VIN is 5729!...our D's might be related????

        You don't need to build a heated section, Try this......I will bet you
the
best stake in your area that it will work!

        A big peace of plastic sheet like you get in rolls at the hardware store
and an ordinary heating pad, like for a sore back. get a cheep one with
out
the auto 1 hr shut off. Put the heating pad on the ground or floor under
the C. Cover the DS with the plastic and weight down the edges of the
plastic with some kind of weight to help trap the heat. Turn the pad on to
Medium and for get. In real cold conditions you may not feel any heat
after
a few days when touching the D's skin, but be assured that the temp will
not drop below freezing under the plastic.

    My car has the wide strip and the portion on the rear right panel
seems
to be torn up a bit.  Can I buy just that portion of the sticker???  Do I
have to buy the whole thing???  Is it hard to remove the sticker, to put

new one on???  Is it hard to put the new one on?  Sorry for all of those
questions, but I am sure you guys are the best ones to answer them!  :-)

Ben:

I had my fuel distributor rebuilt.  I did take mine apart to see why my
engine was smoking so badly.  There are a lot of springs, plungers, and
one metal plate sandwiched in between. I broke the two halves open and
tried to reassemble back together.  Apparently, there is some kind of
sealant that is used because my fuel distributor leaked around the
seals.  I found a auto parts store that sent my distributor to Los
Angeles to get rebuilt.  Costs me $500.00 and the car runs great.  Other
delearships were quoting me $750 to $1,000 and it would have to be sent
out also. 

Check with parts stores that knows a lot about Bosch mechanical fuel
injections systems.  They will tell you that the distributor is
rebuildable but very few places actually do it.  Good luck.

Interesting discussion.  The most effective way to cool the charge
in a rear-engine car is to use a fluid for heat exchange, just like the
engine.  The best configuration is to place the cooler just in front of
the intake manifolds and just after the turbocharger(s).  The reason is
that the longer the distance from the turbocharger to the intake
plenum the longer the turbo lag.  This was the prime goal of the
Legend configuration.

Lotus used an ingenious arrangement for turbocharging the
carburetted Esprits in the early 80's.  The turbo blew air through the
carbs instead of drawing air through the carbs.  The vaporisation
of the gasoline in the carburettors cooled the pressurized air
about 20 degrees on the way through the intake manifold.

The Lotus 910 I4 turbocharged engine is too long and probably
too tall for the DeLorean engine bay.  Intercoolers were not installed
in Esprits until 1989.  I doubt that Lotus would have been able to supply
enough engines for DeLorean.  DeLorean built about 4x more cars
than Lotus during the time the company was in operation.

The Esprit and the DeLorean do not have interchangeable windshields.

How does an intercooler work?  There must be many types.  I have a turbo
Eclipse and it has an intercooler.  I figured it was just like a radiator
for air.  Can someone tell me how it works?
If you use fluid to cool the air than you could hide the intercooler
right?

First off, I would just like to say thank you to everyone who responded to
my post & cleared everything up for me (William T Wilson, Ben Krasnow,
Lee,
etc..), thanks again. The MR2 Intercoolers are located inside the engine
compartment, but are cooled by air flow which comes through the scopes
located on the side of the car. Obviously nobody here wants to cut holes
through their body panels or even the VIRM shell for that matter just to
install ducting. So we need something else. I've got a couple of ideas,
but
just to get it clear, it seems like the standards for mounting are as
follows: Cannot be on the bottom of the car, cannot interfere with the
louvers or the engine cover, but must have air flow across it. As soon as
I
work everything out, I'll let everyone know, plus I'll try to get a web
site
up & running today so I can post them.

Michael,
I agree with you 100% concerning Lotus engines for the Delorean but I
believe you may be incorrect about the computability of the windshields.
Our glazier has substitute the Lotus version on various occasions, and
except for tint color they are a perfect match. Our master crossover list
also shows a match.

For those in the New England area looking for a car I found one for sale
and have talked to the owner.

1982 VIN #11291 - 5 speed  37,000 miles.  The gentleman wants $12,750 for

When my car wouldn't run, I also that that there was something wrong with

fuel distributor, so I took it apart.  It was all clogged up so I cleaned
it
out and then I made sure the whole thing was sealed all around and put it
back
together.  This was about 8-9 months ago and it has never leaked.  Also I
just
took my car to PJ Gradys Thursday and I told Rob that I took it apart and
he
was amazed that it doesn't have a single leak in it.  He asked me what
was the
name of the sealer but I couldn't remember the name of it, if I remember
I'll
let the list know.

Joe,

Mike and I collaborated on an artical compairing the DeLorean and its
cousin, the Lotus Esprit. While we didn't take any measurments, it was
quite
obvious when the cars were parked side by side, that there was a
considerable difference between the windsheilds. Mike's car is a second
series Esprit and it's possible that the later design update done by Peter
Stevens in the late 80's might be a fit for the DeLorean but one must be
specific in choosing a windshield as there are differences in the
different
styling stages.

I just got back from looking at a Delorean which I'm considering buying.
It's
an '81 and the body looks very good, and it runs fine, but the mileage is
68
thousand (mostly freeway mileage) and both seats need all new leather
upholstery (they've cracked from sitting in a hot garage  -- the people
live
in an area which is quite warm in the summer). Also needs two new tires
and
the brakes feel kind of shot. The owner is asking 13K but I'm considering
offering 12K. Is that too much for a Delorean with such high mileage?
What do
you all think?

Ok, here we go... I personally know someone who worked for DMC very =
early on, and he tells me that he actually drove two different early =
prototypes. One had a Chevy 350 in it, and the other had the 350 with =
twin turbos on it!!! He said it was a monster and that should have been =
the one that was produced, but GM would not supply him with the motors =
because of bitter feelings. (he also said that the suspension was =
excellent, which included Macphereson struts.) He went on to tell me =
that these bitter feelings were partially the result of JZD taking many =
of GM's engineers to work on the DMC-12. Some may go absolutely crazy =
and yell at me and tell me how wrong I am and how my friend is crazy, =
but all I know is that he worked for DMC for a long time before =
production, and even until the company's demise. Once production was in =
place, he was the Quality Control foreman for all DMC's that came into =
the east coast. All I can tell you all is what he told me. So, on that =
note, let the debates, be them supporting or negating, begin. Thanks. =

Obviously you know some servicing techniques that we in the DeLorean auto
repair industry are unaware of. I say this as a caution to other DeLorean
owners who, based on your comments, may decide to disassemble their fuel
distributor.  Bosch, the distributor manufacturer, the DeLorean, Volvo,
Haynes, and Chilton service manuals all say: "DO NOT ATTEMPT TO DISSEMBLE
THE FUEL DISTRIBUTOR". If you have discovered a way to complete a service
procedure that is non standard to the industry you need to back it up with
complete detailed specifications and instructions.
If a reader on the list decides to disassemble their headlight switch,
which is described as "NON-SERVICEABLE" and they discover that they can't
put it back together, they will only have to lay out $ 40. for a
replacement. If they try to do the same with the fuel distributor the cost
for a replacement will be around $700.
