From: "Martin Gutkowski (UK)" <martin.is@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxx>
Subject: DML: Exhaust Modificatrions - the return!

I posted a piece regarding the modifications Simon Lees-Milne of the DOC
has had done on his car. After the responses I received both privately
and on the DML, I faxed Simon, and he has sent me a lengthy letter
regarding his conversion as well as a picture of the customised
manifolds. I will post this on my web page as soon as my friend scans it
in :-)
Here is a transcript of Simon's letter:

Since Martin told you about the great improvements I have made to my
European Prototype D, Vin# 11133, I have been back to the engineer who
worked on the car, and together with the points told me from many
conversations I have had over the years with engineers from Lotus, who
worked on the D between 1978 and 1980, I must explain the following:

1) The PRV engine was seriously modified both to the injection and
exhaust systems to meet the stringent USA emissions controls. Lotus
designed a free-flow exhaust and did not want to fit either a calalyst
or Lambda sensor. They new the engine should produce at least 150-160bhp
and the weight of the D needed that output to make it go. The european
prototypes did not have either the lambda or cat, but the awful exhaust
manifolds and pipes and silencers remained. These alone removed some
15hp! Remember the engine was designed to be used in front-mounted
Renaults/Peugeots, so in the D, the piping faces forwards. You will see
from the photo how beautifully simple and efficient the proper free-flow
manifolds are. We have also fitted an identically sized silencer, but
without baffle plates.

2) As any engineer will know, if the gases get away quickly and cleanly,
you can put more fuel into the cylinders. You can also increase the air
flow, either by ram air or improved filters. We have chosen the former
by removing the hot/cold air valve housing. See D:07:01 in the workshop
manual. [Simon was also V interested in the K&N filter and now has the
part number]

3) As the K-Jetronic injection system is purely mechanical, it is
possible to adjust the flow into the cylinders without the ECU
automatically correcting this, as it would in a post 1990 Bosch system.
To adjust the flow, look in the centre top of the Mixture Control Unit
(D:01:02) for a 3mm hex screw. It is probably hidden under sealant, mine
was. Turn this screw a 1/2 turn to the right and there will be a
dramatic increase in supply. I was not correct when I said this reduces
return flow to the tank, in fact it makes no difference [there's your
answer, Bruce!]

Now the downside! All this is not very environmentally friendly! We in
the UK have a more lenient attitude towards 1980 cars, and our annual
test makes allowances for special vehicles. However, before you set
about making your car go like it should, check your State regulations on
emissions.

My engineer also warns that unless you do points 1 and 2, doing 3 can do
long-term damage (washing out the sylinders and causing piston and ring
damage) to your engine and certainly to no performance advantage.
Nothing is that easy with motor cars!

I hope this clarifies the situation and although I have never driven a
"standard" D with 130bhp, I can assure you 167 is fun! I have two other
classic cars, both Italian, producing 195 and 330bhp so I appreciate
accelleration and torque!

Best wishes,

Simon

Subject: DML: DeLorean sighting

Yesterday as I was returning home, I spot a DeLorean coming onto I-77
North
from the exit off of Jackson Blvd. near Ft. Jackson, South Carolina.  I
was
curious if the owner of this vehicle was on the list.  It was the first
time
I've seen a DMC-12 on the road since I bought mine back in February.

I was also wondering if there are any list members from South Carolina.
I'd
like to get a list of names and numbers so that we could possibly have
some
gatherings and share information and our DeLorean experiences.  Please
email
me privately.

Subject: DML: Original vs. altered, and the "list"

Fellow DMCer's,
I have followed the resent postings on the two above subjects. First
custom or
original. If you want a perfect D, then stay original. Or if you choose
to,
custom it.

The value of the D is not my reason for purchasing mine. I enjoy driving
my D
each day. I have seen "perfect D's". And I have seen D's that were
customed to
the max. My D looks original but the changes I have made to it, are things
that I can change back to original in about 30 min. We all have our own
reasons for owning this fine autos. The bottom line ( custom or original)
is
we all have a great auto!!!

Now onto the second topic: This list has helped me and everyone who reads
it
in some way. In answers to my questions, in the answers to others
questions,
and by the general sharing of the experiences of owning this auto. If the
party who trashed the list feels that way, so be it. That's one less
person to
have to deal with. ( In whole or "parts"). If any of you subscribe to any
other "autos" lists then you know how special this list is. So, James
keep it
coming, its like a Xmas present three times a week, 52 weeks a year!!!!!

Mike,
Remove the fuel pump inspection plate under your spare tire, than remove
the fuel pump cover. Attach a 12 V test light between ground and the
PURPLE
/ WHITE wire which is connected to the top of the fuel pump, turn your
ignition key
to the start position. If the test lamp lights than you either have a
ground problem of a defective pump. Let me know the result.

Hay Jeff,

I agree the DeLorean is a high maintenance machine, plus it has a very
poor electrical system, which is not even able to support the car with out
modification. There are mechanical parts that are just so much junk, that
will never be repairable, just replaceable. Any one giving you a had time
just tell them to go twist rusty nuts.........

But Jeff just remember that it is a lot of fun to struggle against over
whelming odds in a single handed fight for truth, Justice and the DeLorean
way!

I'm getting the same problem.. I fixed it (kinda) by adjusting the bolt
that
stops the gas pedal.  It could be that your pedal isn't returning to the
fully rested position.  However, if you adjust it too far up, the car acts
funny when you let off the pedal.. kinda sputters and stuff.  The only
problem I found was that I couldn't find that "happy medium", so I'm back
to
the high idle.  Give it a try, maybe you'll have better luck!

BTW: On my car the bolt was just bare metal, and when I let off the gas
pedal it would always "clink" as it hit it... If anyone else is getting
this, you may want to get a little rubber bumper for it (like the ones on
the hood stops).  Just be sure and adjust the bolt upwards the height of
the
bumper you add.

Do you have the adjustable clutch link? or Braided clutch line??  They
both seem to help hard shifting problems.  As the old plastic line gets
hot, it will expand more.  This makes it so it is hard to shift.  You
can purchase both items from PJgrady.

Not sure about the steering, but try a shot of lubricant on the rubber

because I have fitted a DeLorean spare on to the rear of an E-Z-GO.
Actually you have a practical suggestion. Fitting the tires you mentioned
for a stored DeLorean would be a good alternative to jack stands. BTW,
Congratulations on owning the 70th DeLorean out of the factory.

Michael,
The specified idle speed is 750 RPM + or - 50 RPM. The idle speed is
controlled by the IDLE SPEED SYSTEM which is comprised of the IDLE SPEED
ECU, an IDLE SPEED REGULATOR, MICRO SWITCH, a THERMISTOR, and a DIODE. You
will find all of these components in ( D:05:03 ) of your Workshop Manual.
Most problems in this circuit are caused by a malfunction of the micro
switch, regulator, or ECU. The first and easiest test is as follows. Go
back to the engine compartment, and with the engine turned off, operate
the
throttle spool, or have an assistant push down on the accelerator pedal,
and listen for a "click" when the accelerator is released or pressed. Let
me know the results.

Difficulties shifting into reverse can usually be corrected by an
adjustment of the GEAR SHIFT CABLE and or the GEAR SHIFT TUBE. You will
find this information in ( F:07:01 ) of your Workshop Manual. Whenever
your
ignition key sticks turn the steering wheel slightly, this will take
pressure off the lock column and should allow the key to turn freely.

Subject: DML: The magic day

Hello to all and seasons Greetings

Well yesterday was December 21st 1998 the planned release date for the
DeLorean Limited Edition model Kit for the pre-paid reservations.

I am very happy to announce that this official release date is now valid
and should be considered the legal release date for all reservations that
were prepaid and all the remaining reservations as well.

For all pre-paid reservations the process is automatic, the reservation
is processed, payment either verified or processed. Some credit card
charges have not been run and some checks have not been deposited. Once
the reservation is processed, the reserved kit is made up and shipped.
Yes I am actually making up the kits one at a time by hand to ensure that
each and every one is complete.

For all other reservation holders the release date has been changed to
the day after I ship the last pre-paid kit, which i think will be the end
of the first week of January. From that point on reservations will only
be good for 30 days, any un executed reservations will be reassigned to
members of the waiting list. There is no grace period and no
exceptions.

For more details please check the "magic date" post on the DMC Bulletin
board -

http//:www.totalimmersion.com/dmcboard/

All the master parts dies are finished and shoo9ting kits will
start right after X-mass or as soon after as we get the assembly
instructions completed. You may find it interesting that two of our DML
members are authoring the assembly instructions.

For those of you who asked about having your kits assembled for you, I
will be asking our model maker/author if he would like to do this. You
will know who he is when the assembly instructions are posted.

I should stress that in spite of the fact that there are now 670+ DML
members on the waiting list, that if you have not asked for placement on
the list you should, several reservations have been canceled and given
the very low number of prepaid reservations It is very possible that
there will be kits left over.

All left over kits will be offered here on the DML one time then go to
QVC for sale as limited edition Historic collectibles. QVC has suggested
a price of $400+ ??

Happy holidays and cheers to all

Lee

I am seriously considering installing a cruise control on my DeLorean.
I am interested inwhich brand/model that any of the list members have
installed.
What problems if any did you have with the installation and performance of
the unit.
What was the cost of the unit that you installed.

All input is appreciated.

Thanks

Mike,

Make sure the throttle plates close at idle. Also be sure the idle speed
micro switch is making up when the throttle plates are in the idle
positon.
Push it down with a screw driver while the throttle plates are closed.
Have
you done anything that could have caused a vacuum leak? The fuel system
reacts to the amount of air being taken in so fast idle is caused by
something causing more air to enter the engine. The idle speed motor opens
to allow a prescribed amout of air around the closed throttle plates. If
it
is stuck in a position that allows the fast idle the only way I know of to
check it out is to borrow one from a friends DeLorean and try it. The ECU
contols the idle speed motor and could possiblty be the culprit but I
really
doubt it. More times than not, problems like this are simple things.

Claude,

You car was one of 88 DeLoreans leased to DeLorean Company executives and
also used for training. The company that handled this was CFR, Inc. I'm
not
sure what their role was in the DeLorean Motor Company but when they were
returned to CFR they were considered used units without warranty. The
leasing agreement with CFR specified that displosal of those cars through
auctions or any advertised ad was forbidden for six months after their
return. I'd guess DeLorean didn't want any used DeLoreans advertised until
he sold a bunch of new ones.

One of the last times I was either at DMC(houston) or the warehouse, I
ran across a list of these cars, and who they were assigned to. By now I
do not remember who had which cars, but perhaps Leif Montin (original DMC
Parts Guru, now list lurker) might recall or have a copy of that memo.
