In addition to the '36 Ford previously mentioned, a 1960 (?) Lincoln
Continental (with suicide doors) was also bodied in SS. The Ford and the
Continental reside next to the very first "production" DeLorean (#00500)
in the Crawford Automotive Museum in Cleveland, Ohio.

Most cars are made of some kind of metal. ;)
Back in the '30s Ford used to make a few stainless steel cars at the end
of every model year. They would do this because it was unusual, and in
order to destroy their dies when they were done with them. I do not think
any of the other "old timers" did this, but maybe...
I have heard rumors from an uncle of mine that someone (perhaps Honda?) is
thinking about making a new model of car from stainless. I have no real
evidence to back this up, neither does he. Therefore take it for what
it's worth...

I have pulled DeLorean World # 16 and read the article you are referring
to; quite interesting. You may be on to something. It is certainly worth
more research. Your Vin No. is the lowest I have encountered since I have
been involved with these great cars since 1983. BTW from my point of view
your DeLorean has additional value due to this rare category. Keep me
posted on any additional information you may come across and I will do the
same.

paper,and did not even look at the vin # until appox.three months after I
bought it,orginally I assumed it was a early production,untill one day I

mistake the article states the vins 520 thru 000648,anyway I have been

Deloreans since
1981,and had come across,a person who was selling a 1981 Delorean,and he
told
me it had a factory brown interior,he lived somewhere in southern
Connecticut,this was back around 1985,I never went to look at the car,(I
wish
I had),Does anybody know anything about a Factory released car with a
brown
interior,I was thinking it was Johnny Carsons(Heeeers Johnnny
fame)car,because
it was about the same time he got his repossed,I am always interested in
the
early production history of Deloreans.

Fellow DML'ers
If anyone is travelling through the Memphis area, you may want to take
note
that there is a BTTF Time Machine on display at the Hollywood Casino in
Tunica
Mississippi. I finally got some time to go down and look at it this past
weekend. If you have ever been to Universal Studios on either coast, you
know
that they are very particular with their Time Machines, only showing it at
irregular intervals and the such, and they sure dont want you to touch!
This
version has the Mr Fusion attachment, and beautiful silver rims. Its
displayed inside the hotel, with the driver door open, but there is about
four
feet between you and the car, making it difficult to get a VIN Number. I
could see, however, that it was an 81 five speed. As goofy as this thing
looks, it is the reason many of us are "INTO" Deloreans, and worth seeing.
BTW, if you are travelling through the Memphis area, dont forget to call
or
stop by. I would enjoy visiting with anyone who shares our interests.

Actually there were two stainless Lincolns, both convertibles. Then in
1961
the last two of that model Thunderbird were done with stainless. I know
oneof them is privately owned in the Detroit area but I don't know the
were
abouts of the second one. These were done in conjunction with Allegheny
Ludhum Steel company and were always done at the end of the model run
because the hard stainless could take the edge off the stamping dies. I
wonder what DeLorean did to make sure his dies maintained their integrety.

A number of automatics have been turbo'd. Ed B. has a turbo automatic -
but since he has his own repair facility, I suspect that doesn't count. I
put twin turbos on my automatic '81 after 47,000 miles of cussing the
sluggishness of the automatic. It made a some difference, but it still
was
nothing like my current turbo'd 5 speed. The turbos did nothing for 1st
gear, were quite significant in 2nd, but did nothing for 3rd (hard to get
enough revs to get real boost). Also, there is a real question as to
whether the automatic will withstand the added power (out on the road
you'll need to "kick down" to really use the turbos and that is a bit hard
on the tranny at speed).
I put nearly 50,000 more miles on my '81 with the turbos. If you ever
seriously think about putting a turbo on your automatic, give Rob Grady a
call for some input. He'll tell you not to, but I think that you would
want to hear the reasons from him rather than second hand.

Hi All,
My Delorean currently has a back right hand CV joint which =20
now makes a severe amount of noise !!!
I have gone to Renault and they will only sell a complete =20
Drive Shaft.
(=A3500 or $800)
They also suggested that the drive shaft is off of a Renault Alpine=
???
Can someone let me know WHAT drive shaft is on the Delorean ??
Also IF they have a supplier which can supply a CV joint separately=
??
I spoke to my mechanic and he says there is no problem to fit the C=
V
joint if we could only buy one.

As a result of the discussions on the DML, I asked about the availability
of a K&N filter for my humble Turbo-Diesel on the mailing list for my
car. The following reply makes interesting reading for all those with or
planning to use a K&N filter...

Never believe the manufacturers hype - I try to listen to non connected
sources, but anyway ....
You can see a lot of daylight through a K&N - if you can see daylight
what
is going to stop similar sized particles getting into your engine. They
claim the oil but get serious this dirt never even touches the
filter/oil.
I will dig up sites to show you if you want; but
case one; Maintenance supervisor at open cast mining site was using 100
USD
filters every week on every large truck fleet - tried the K&N on one
vehicle - had to rebuild the engine within a month or so
Case two; magazine articles comparing them - yes the K&N is up to 40-60%
more effective at passing air flow but a similar drop in collection of
dirt
- ironically the dirtier it got the better it filtered (or course less
air
flow/higher pressure drop).
Personal experience on filters passing too much came from a crawler
mounted
drilling rig my family ran - standard industrial filter would mean an
engine rebuild every 6 months with bores that you could see the piston
rings down because the bore was worn out. We changed to 4 times the
filter
capacity in a cleaner place (on top of the roof) and then engine would
last
3 years or more. This was in a very tough environment - rock dust
everywhere - perfect grinding paste.
So fit them for enhanced performance but be aware of the consequences and
the reduced life in dusty conditions for your engine not your air filter.
The foam filters are more effective than the paper originals but still do
their job - of course at a performance loss to the K&N.

I couldn't agree with you more! Yes, our cars have problems.. often times
they never go away, and for some folks, this does come across as being
high
maintenance. But most of the time it's very rewarding to do the repairs.

It's the day before Xmass and things here are shutting down until the
26th,
I wanted to take a moment and let every one know that our DMC-12 Limited
Edition is complete as far as the various parts and bits that go in the
kit.
I have started printing the boxes and will begin sending final address
verification
e-mail to each Reservation holder as their kit is completed. Yes as I have
posted
each kit is hand assembled and hand packed one at a time so each kit will
be
complete and be personalized.
Every one will be happy to learn that JZD has decided to accept his kit.
We are now just waiting for the assembly instructions to be completed. I
will be
back to work on the 28th. I will post when the first kits are shipped,
(but
no names). There will also be pictures posted some time over the holidays,
(when ever my Internet guy has time to upload them).
It looks as if we will finally have our own DMC-12 Kits!
