Mike,
Hi, problems again? We all go through it. One thing after another.
Replace your handle from Rob @ PJ Grady with a new one. Might as well
change
the other side too.
Replace the temperature sending unit to correct the radiator fan from
turning
on continuously.
As far as your low beams goes, change the low beam unit and they will work
properly again. There is a high beam filament in the low beam unit, so
when
you turn on the high beam all four will go on even though the low beam is
out.
In the high beam unit there is only one filament. If that goes out, it is
out.
The low beam units are cheap, between $6.00 to $12.00 each for standard
units.
There are units that cost much, much more for the replaceable new high
tech
bulb and housing. They throws a different type of light pattern and are
brighter to simulate day light. Supposed to be lest fatiguing for night
driving conditions?

Michael,
The original door handles are plastic and the replacements are cast
aluminum there are no stainless replacements. Custom replacements are
available from most part suppliers and come with directions. The handle
set
up is confusing so try to keep the original as assembled as possible as a
reference.
Your low beam out problem means that that filament is burnt out which
means
you will have to replace the lamp.
To check your fan thermostat switch (otterstat) pull one of the wires
connected to it, if the fans shut off than the switch is N.G. When you
order the replacement be sure to include the seal, this will correct your
coolant leak at this point.

If your RPM's are under 1000 this is a little high but should not be of
real concern.

TO ALL,
There have been several posts this week concerning idle speed. Be aware
that the three brass screws located at the top of the throttle valve
assembly on top of the mixture control assembly must all be turned
clockwise as far as possible. If any of these screws are open the idle
speed control unit may not be able to maintain the specified idle speed.

I am just trying to get a little more performance out of the Delorean.
Does anyone out there have any experience or first hand knowledge on the
following products that are being sold to help increase H/P, increase gas
mileage? These two manufactures are making claims that their product will
help save the environment beside the benefits to the improvement of the
vehicles performance and operations.
One of these unit is called JETCAR 2000 from International Trading Co.,
San Francisco, CA,

The other unit is PSJ-007 from Pro-Equipment Inc., Waukesha, WI
website: www.proequipment.com
These two products cost about the same in price. $60.00 a unit. For a
DeLorean, two will be needed at $120.00 plus shipping and handling
charges.
The claims by the two different companies sounds good and scientifically
correct.
They are both pretty much the same on the working principles. It does so
when
the vehicle is in motion by combining the rushing ambient air from the
holes
that are manufactured on the outer body of the unit. This creates a quick
suction to evacuate the hot exhaust gases from the vehicle's exhaust
system
that is passing on the inner tube. Check the sites for further details.
To get these units attached to the DeLorean's tail pipe, I would have to
cut
to the length of the original tail pipes so I can attach on these units.
Beside the cost of TWO units and the possibilities that they may not work
(more mechanical snake oil for sale?) and then I have to restore the
original
tail pipes by removing these units............................Anyway,
help or
opinions anyone?

It is amazing, just when you think you have turned the corner on =
problems and have everything in good shape. ***BAM***. I noticed today =
when getting the leaves out of the engine area, (Those of you in leaf =
turning areas know what I am talking about!) that the louver/engine =
cover when up was pressing down considerably on the stainless on the =
rear of the roof of the D. After further inspection, I noticed that the =
plastic bar under the edge of the roof was broken, to the left of center =
in a vertical fashion, and that one of the clamps (far right side) of =
the rear stainless piece was above the plastic bar. I have no idea how =
this happened much less how to fix it.
Question: Is this common and what should I do to fix it?
Secondly, I am having a lot of water come in the car. For the first =
time since our family has owned our D. (1984) the D. sat outside during =
a hard rain all night long. Got in the car on Monday a.m. and =
discovered a very damp seat and wet carpet behind the drivers side seat. =
IS THIS A COMMON PROBLEM? The seal in that area seems or appears to be =
OK. I only have a seal problem near the front (top) right corner of the =
window. Any ideas?

Hi All,
I would like to know if anyone has come across this problem
and if so how they solved it !!!
My doors originally did not open correctly...
So..
1). I replaced the Struts.
(Same problem)
2). I adjusted the torsion bars.
(They now go up prefectly).
However ...
Now I have a problem in that the rear corner of the door
catches on the corner of the T-Bar.
(This is causing wear due to metal on metal..)
I also have a problem in that one door goes up slightly more
than the other..
My questions are...
What actually 'stops' the door ?
(It seems like the struts ?, if so is the best way to adjust
the positioning of the lower torsion bar stud)
What should I adjust first to get the rear corner of the door
to miss the T-Bar ?
I have checked where the door hinges attach to the actual door and
they are fully adjuusted.
It looks to me as though I will need to adjust the hinges where they
actually attach onto the car itself ?
(This looks like a big job... which will involve letting the pressure
off thetorsion bars etc etc).

Mike - you need to replace the lamp. The low-beam lamps have two
elements,
one for low beam
and one for high. The low side is burned out.

You should fit. It's not a conversion van, but the DeLorean has plenty of
interior room for a tall person. My rule of thumb: if you don't fit in a
DeLorean, then you won't fit in any sports car.

I'm the same height, weigh 200lbs., and fit fine with the seat
reclined. I drive mine 800mi. at a stretch and have minimal stiffness
at the end as long as I take a break every now and then. I'm also 54
and not as limber as I once was, damn.

some pics of the interior of the car (seen lots of the front, but would
like to see the rear luggage compartment/shelf... also wondering how deep
is the trunk/hood? Is it useful for anything besides a small toolkit,
flashlight, and spare tire?
Another thing I've always wondered.. where is the gas cap (I know about

separate cap on the left of the back of the hood on the early 81s, but
have
never heard of them mentioned on the other years).

First, let's clarify what we are talking about.
On some rear bumpers, where the word Delorean appears, the
foreground
is painted white. The letters remain unpainted black.
Scott Mueller gave us a clue that this was factory original when he
noted that when he was in Ireland for the Expo, he met a gentleman
who claimed that he did the painting for publicity purposes.
Further photographic evidence can been found in a book entitled,
THE DELOREAN, 1997-1993, by Brooklands Books. This book is a
collection of magazine articles on the De Lorean.
On page 41 in an article entitled "DMC-12 Materializes," from ASIAN
AUTO, March 1981, you will see a picture with the painted rear
bumper.
On page 48 in an article entitled "De Lorean, the Phantasy Becomes
Reality," from WHEELS, June 81, is another photograph with the
painted
rear bumper.
On page 54 is both a press photo and a road photo from AUTOCAR, June
13, 1981, in an article entitled, "De Lorean -- American Assessment."
I am particularly fascinated by this unique feature because I own a
De Lorean with it. It is VIN 1440, manufactured in May, 1981. My
De Lorean may be in one of those pictures. My car was first sold
from P. J. Grady, Inc., in September, 1981.
Conclusion: this specific white painted foreground IS factory
original.

In regards to your door rubbing or hitting your T-Bar (I'm assuming that
you
are talking about your stainless steel T-panel?), you will have to
slightly
shift the whole T-panel sightly one way or another. this is done by
carefully
removing your outer seals and loosen the screws that hold it in place.
You
may have to unbend the T-panel tabs along the back to get it to move. had
the
same problem when I replaced the roof seals. It really has to be
perfectly
aligned or it will rub on the back corner of the doors when you open them.

With the pressures that have been on the auto manufacturers the last
several years, one would think if some if the claims advertised about
these
products were true, we'd have seen them incorporated into production cars.
The truth is there is no simple, cheap, bolt on item that will dramaticly
increase horse power ond/or reduce emissions. $10 exhaust extensions are
one thing but $120, forget it.

This DeLorean was unfortunately in not-so-good condition.... for the
storage
space behind the seats, from front to back, it is about a foot. There is
a
black netting that goes over the storage space to hold things in place.. I
hope this helps.. I have some better DeLorean interior pictures that I wil
be posting to my site in a week or so

Aldo said that on the back bumper of his VIN 1440 DeLorean the
foreground around the letters is painted white.
FYI my VIN 1280 car, also May, 81, has an unpainted letter area.
On the VIN 500 car here in Cleveland, the area around the letters is
painted light grey. This matches the car very well.

My '81 (#1409, gas flap, grooves in hood, black interior) manual =
transmission is giving me fits so was just wondering if anyone had any =
ideas. Basically, I can't shift into 2nd gear when the transmission =
fluid is cold and the car is moving at normal shifting speeds. I can =
shift into 2nd if stopped or moving very slowly (under 6-8 mph) though. =
(Both upshifting and especially downshifting are affected.) However, as =
soon as the car is driven a mile or so, I can shift relatively easily =
into 2nd and it improves to normal shifting within another mile or so =
although downshifting takes a little longer. This seems to be dependent =
on how cold it is. Also, last week I stored it in a heated garage =
overnight and shifting was perfect immediately. I think the damage was =
caused when the clutch fluid level dropped (nasty plastic clutch pipe!) =
and I lost the use of the clutch on my maiden drive home. Anyway, is it =
safe to use a "thinner" transmission fluid during the winter months and =
if so, what grade or specs?

I wanted to thank the several contributors who sent me suggestions for ="">
removing the air vents to help remove the radio. I had little trouble =
after getting your help and was able to finally get my radio fixed. The =
right shaft had broken off and you couldn't attach the knob to it. =
After removing the radio, I got a tuner shaft with the same diameter end =
from an electronics shop and cut the end off. Then a friend very =
carefully drilled a very thin hole into both shafts and threaded a very =
thin screw into the openings and used locktite to secure them. The knob =
now fits but I'm going to be very careful flipping to different stations =
as I'm not sure how long the repair will last. =20

There are plenty of pictures of the interior out on the web. Some are
just seeing in through an open door, but the place I would look would be
the DeLorean Web Ring that the dmcnews.com page links to at the bottom. I
assure you, by the time you're done leafing through all these pictures,
you will be able to draw scale pictures in your sleep.
The trunk is only a few inches deep. It will hold a suitcase and some
miscellaneous items stuck in next to it and not much else. It will NOT
hold a flat tire as it is too shallow. I believe a front flat will fit in
the compact spare holder but a rear flat won't. This is why you should
have a luggage rack.
There is plenty of space (relatively speaking) behind the seats. There is
a nice locking compartment behind the driver's seat and a cargo net. You
can put items on the shelf but this will block the rear view.
My overall impressions of the interior (from the short time I hav been
able to see it) is that it's rather like riding in a comfortable leather
luge. The seats slope back rather far and the shorter you are, the closer
to upright you can sit without hitting your head on the ceiling. The
center console is quite high (you can rest your elbow on it comfortably)
which adds to the "cockpit" feeling. Despite the closed-in feeling it is
a very comfortable seat and ride with a surprising amount of room,
however, do not choose the DeLorean if you are claustrophobic. Although
the windows are too small to really offer great visibility, especially to
the rear quarter, you can see all four corners of the car so with practice
it is probably easy to park. The engine being in the rear sounds markedly
different than a front engine car.
All the fuel filler doors are in the same place, the left rear of the
hood. It only matters whether there is a flap in the hood or if you have
to open the whole thing. There are conflicting ideas about why there was
once a flap and then there wasn't, the two most common are that the flap
ruined the structural integrity of the hood, making it sag; or second,
that there was never supposed to be a flap but DMC put one in at first
because of a potential legal problem. When that problem was resolved the
flap went away.

My Vin is 01149 and has the light grey/silver outline on the letters.
I also have written correspondence from one of, if not the only, bumper
painter in Ireland who explained this routine. My best guess is that
some of these bumpers got used on the early cars that were sent to
dealers (like #00500) because the original owner of mine, a dealer, said
he did not paint it.

I am a little out of my league here, but I *think* your problem is with
clutch
fluid, not transmission fliud! I recall someone telling me that Girling
fluid
can retain moisture in a way that regular American fluid cannot. A lot of
moisture could have entered the system when you lost fluid. The
resulting H2O / Girling solution will have new properties which vary with
temperature.
I believe that if you remove all the fluid and replace it with new Girling
fluid you will see improved performance. Do NOT drain the system, as
this will allow more moisture to enter. You should bleed the old, water
logged fluid out of the system while carefully replacing it with fresh
fluid.

I use my car every day. I put on at least a 90 miles a day. Good oil and
maintenance is gospel here.
I am a heavy believer on lubricating fluids for any vehicle, aircraft,
vessel,
machinery, etc. Lubrication cuts and prevents friction, wear and failure.
I have a 5 speed manual transmission in my DeLorean. In the pass I have
used
the old recommendation 75-90 petroleum based gear oil. Two years ago I
have
replace my tranny oil with synthetic oil. The brand I used is REDLINE
BRAND
for the manual transmission. I also used Castrol 5-50 Syntex in the
engine
for over 30,000 miles. I didn't know about the Red Line Brand back then.
I
will try Red Line 10-40 engine oil on the next oil change. I would like
to
know the difference of the two.
I had the Red Line brand tranny oil for the last 30,000 miles of usage.
Love
it. The tranny works the same in extreme hot or cold weather, with very
little difference in the "feel" during shifting. It shift better and
smoother. Less friction and faster? I think so. I can't prove it. It
is
just a feeling and I think I am right. When I was using the conventional
(dino) petroleum oil it took awhile before the tranny shifted well in the
cold
weather. In the hot summer heat and in creeping traffic, you can smell
that
tranny (dino) oil odor. YUK-O.
No more "summer tranny odor."
I had the tranny open up for a bent "pin" to be change and Rob said that
the
tranny and all the components are in good shape! No shavings, no broken,
no
"worn in" or failing premature parts.
The down side? All the synthetics oils are EXPENSIVE. Worth the bucks?
I
think so.
Try it, if the cost is not a concern. It may or may not resolve your
problems. It helped and resolved mine. No snake oil here! Synthetic
snake
oil? Hmmm.........wonder if I can market that???

Concerning your rear louver problem, there are four 13mm nuts, two per
hinge, which attach the hinges to the louver assembly. (See parts manual
8/4/3 No. 13) By loosening these nuts you will find that the front portion
of the louver, adjacent to the stainless roof section, can be raised to
prevent it from contacting the roof section.
The part that you said is broken, I assume is the Rear Screen Upper Finish
Panel as seen in 8/3/0 No.24, if this is correct remove the mounting
screws
and readjust this item so that it re-aligns with the tab from the roof
panel.

I read with great intrest the ongoing story about
the White letters on the DeLorean car. Why was it
done and were? Well it was done at the car plant
in Belfast for advertising porposes.About 10 cars
were taken from the assembly line and I was the
man who painted them. I worked at the Plant and we
had this idea that the name DeLorean did not
standout in the Photograph for the Advetising
leaflets so I painted the letters that were
already indented on the fender.It is as simple as

Subject: DML: WON'T START?
Well, I've gone and done it now. Where to begin. I seem to have fixed
the car so it won't start. This after I decided to clean all the
contacts in the engine compartment. "The colored plugs behind the cover
in the right hand corner, the resistor on the firewall #101054 I think
that is what it is called, the boot covered positive terminal on the
right hand side". In short anything I could find.
Then i installed the relay update kit from P.J.Grady's. "Two fusses,
one relay and the jumper wires". The car hadn't been run in a couple of
weeks and the battery was to low to start it so I hooked up the jumpers
and allowed it to charge for about twenty minutes with my truck
running. Well, it would turn over fine but it wouldn't start. I tried
resetting all of the relays from the update kit and the wires at the
resistor mentioned before. I checked the archives and found several
references to starting problems but nothing that seemed to fit this.
I have to assume it was something I did as the car would always start
before I fixed it. "typical"
Also, when checking the inertia switch I happened to notice on the
Lambda there is a pair of black wires coming from it that were
unplugged. I plugged them back into the plug with the orange black and
green wires. Is that correct?
The only thing i noticed different was the lack of sound from the fuel
pump, i usually hear it run for a second or two as the key is turned to
accessory. Any idea's would certainly be appreciated.
Still having fun though.

aligned roof panel, if this sounds correct let me know and I'll tell you
how to make an adjustment to eliminate your problem.

Subject: DML: Interesting videotape
While I was searching my campus library for a copy of Stainless Steel =
Illusion (or any book on DeLorean, for that matter) and being appalled =
that they had none, I ran across a video cassette from an old PBS series =
called Enterprise. They had an episode called "Start Up", which was =
totally dedicated to the creation of DMC. Even though it was only 30 =
mins long, I found it quite interesting as it showed several prototypes =
of the car, clips of a few of the company's higher-ups (including =
DeLorean himself), interior shots of the factory when it was running, =
the actual production of the cars, etc, etc. This was a neat little =
find and I recommend it to anyone who can find it.
