Cecil-
try contacting the Haggerty insurance people.
they say limited mileage but put no specific distance
in their paperwork. the policy has no deductible and
is in force for entire year- no I cant take it out to drive
because the effective date excludes this beautiful Feb
afternoon. They were enthusiastic to cover my car and
the rate was half that paid to my regular carrier.

That sounds pretty good. I forgot to say that I was looking for a special
deal for the list when talking to them. I had mine done this summer at a
discounted price from them since I do other business with them. I was
trying to work out a deal with them for all of us. The plant manager said
he was terrified working on mine seeing as how rare they were, but he
would
welcome any others who would like to call him. I have seen chromed wheels
and they look great!!!
I am one of those dreaded people who are trying to keep mine original,
even
though my wife is looking for a Black one. I think the modified ones look
exceptional though when done right.

Also, regarding the steering bushing problem, I replaced my bushing
(grommet) on the steering shaft as it goes through the firewall with a
replacement part from Don at D.M.C. in Anaheim with a solid machined
part (silicone brass maybe ?) and wow, the steering feels smoother and
more solid than ever in my 5 years of ownership. No more clunking
either. P.S. I have over 100,000 miles on the vehicle.

James,
I noticed that you recommended one of the collector insurance companies
called Grundy Collector Insurance Company.
I personally had collector insurance with them for over 14 years
straight, until the management started to perform illegal activities
regarding the insurance coverage and underwriting procedures to their
policy holders. They were ordered by the PA Insurance Commission to
cease these illegal practices they were performing and fined. {I will
provide PA Insurance file numbers and points of contact regarding these
instances to anyone who e-mails me directly.} If you would not transfer
all you other collector cars, daily cars, and health/
home/life insurance policies to them they then would cancel your policy
citing non-existing situations which would change yearly! How I know
this is, I was the victim of this action! I got tired of fighting after
5 years of this.
Perhaps they may have now changed, however, I want anyone who may
consider them to be fairly informed. Most insurance companies are VERY
GOOD, and perhaps Grundy Collector Insurance Company is now if they have
removed the singular person involved and responsible as listed on the PA
Insurance Commission's formal decision.
The bottom line is most companies are very good, but you have to do
your homework on researching the track record regarding individual
companies. This is NOT a bashing of the Grundy Company, but an actual
past event that DeLorean owners need to be aware of.

I agree with Bill Swilley that the information on this car should be
made available. I also think that the car should become a 1984 model at
the same time. I believe that it would be in the interest of Delorean
owners to improve their cars to later model version that would be better
than the original. If the nations organization can develop list of
improvement for future years, the model years could be established. Here
are some of my thought which I recently shared with JZD.
A lot of club members would like to see you discuss what you had planned
for the Delorean in future years.. The idea would be if they upgraded
their cars, they could say they have equivalent later year models or
factory options.. Here is some thoughts that we put together.

Cecil-
You may want to shop around. I'm 21, with two tickets on my record and I
pay $80 a month for full coverage through Allstate. I know it would be
even lower if I were over 25 and didn't have those tickets... It may have
something to do with location (I'm in Eugene, OR) or it could be because
it's not my "primary" car (I don't have any driving restrictions though).

Thanks. I have just added the pictures my friend took as I was
buying the car. Seeing someone buying a DeLorean seemed like a fun
thing to put up. And Yes, after seeing a few cars this one is almost
100% spotless. I have seen new cars that have not been this clean. I

I'm in N. California and I have CSAA (AAA). I told them I don't
expect to put more than 3 to 4K a year on the car and I already have
3 other vehicles insured with them. The sticking point for
driveability seems to be commuting. That's been the big factor with
AAA on my other cars. I have full coverage on the 'D' and a $500
deductable. That is costing me $570 a year. That's HALF of what it
cost me to insure my 200SX/SEV6. The SX has a 3.0 liter 'Z' engine
and is considered a 'sports car' (what a joke!). But since the 'D'
ONLY has a 2.8 liter engine it isn't considered a sports car. Go
figure. I had a 260Z (2.6 liter) and of course it was a sports car.
I'm also 41, married, and my wife hasn't hit anyone in years :^). So
as the saying goes, 'your mileage my vary'.

Hi Mike,
It's interesting that your comments come when they do. I was having a
conversation just a few days ago with another DMC'er about DMC prices. We
concluded that the current low price is the direct result of current
owners
selling at low prices. The fact is there has always been a very limited
number of DMC-12's to begin with, and that the current owners have 100%
control of the value of the DMC. If current owners are quoting low prices
and taking low prices, then they have no one but them selves to blame. The
"Public's" view of the value is of no consequence as to the value of the
DMC, it's the owners alone who decide the price, if "we" owners value the
DMC low then that's it's true value, and in the same light, if "we" owners
value the DMC High, then it's true value will be high. To push the price
of
a DMC up only requires that we all demand the higher amount to make it so!
I don't think any one who has stopped me to talk about my DMC has guessed
under 40K, which suggest to me that the low current value of the DMC is
self imposed by current owners. I suggest a case in point...., there is at
least one person who consistently blithers on this
list about how expensive this part or that service is. It's this sort of
"poor mouthing" that detracts from the value of the DMC. It goes with out
saying that if one thinks small (poor) then one is viewed that way. Maybe
if "we" owners expected and demanded more for our DMC's things would
change. When I am asked what I paid for "that", ......I say "you would be
surprised!"
In excellent condition I see no reason why a price of $30K+ would be
unreasonable, considering the current prices for some of the new
nondescript junk being passed off as new high tech cars.

We also had a problem getting insurance on our DeLorean....We're in our
40's.
Our insurance agent (State Farm) rewrote the policy on our 1972 Grand
Torino
Sport to the Delorean and wrote a new policy for the Torino. Alstate
would
not cover the car.
This may help..I hope so. Our policy is around $330.a half. But we
suspend it
to about $54.00 a half to store it.

Thanks for all the good responses. It is gratifying all the good
information that can be attained by this medium. One item of my original
message that was not responded to yet was "what happened to the D.O.A.
insurance program?" Is this something that some of the other clubs
(Delorean Motor Club for example) or chapters could address?
I have looked at most of the collector car insurance but all that I have
contacted have said absolutely no driving the car even one day to and from
work (only 6 miles!) or on errand trips like to the store etc. I just
don't
want to restrict my enjoyment of the car this much.

IMHO:
DeLoreans are Great Cars! If you could take them to any shop, and the
shop
owner could easily find the parts and manuals, you wouldn't hear so much
complaining. Mile for mile, my D requires less maintenance than any of
my
other three cars. It also cost me the least (at 3,000 mi./yr.) to insure.
One reason we hear so much about Ds in need of repair, is that clubs and
lists are the only place to get the info that many shops are lacking.
Another reason is the deterioration that occurs when the cars are stored
instead of driven. New owners of these cars may find the repair bill
somewhat high.
With the growing use of the Internet, it will be important to emphasize
the
benefits of ownership, and how easy it is to get the answers you need
(thanks, in part, to this list).
Even the used car pricing guides are based on what the cars are actually
selling for. Hold out for higher prices and the "book value" goes up.

Hi List,
Finding insurance was very easy for me. I contacted my current
insurance agent to ask about insurance for the DeLorean I was about to
buy. The quote was approx $800/yr. The agent told me to call with the
VIN# and they would insure it site unseen(for the drive home after
purchase) I brought the car by the agents office on the way home, they
looked at the exterior(NO pictures) and wrote me a policy. Im 26 years
old with a minor accident and a few speeding tickets and the yearly rate
is $866 for full coverage. I stated the difficulty of others insuring
their DeLorean and there was no problems for me.
Good Luck with the insurance thing! See you in Ohio in June!

A place that I know of located in Sunnyvale (45 minutes south of San
Francisco) is called Continental Motor Works. I had about $1400 worth of
work done by them in June including window regulators from PJ Grady. They
did a beautiful job installing them and I have had no problems at all. I
figure if they can do a great job on the Delorean windows, they can do a
great job on just about any part of the car (which they did). The owner,
Rick, is very friendly and confident with Deloreans, saying he works on
one
about once a month. Besides Deloreans, the shop specializes in Maseratis,
Alfa Romeos, BMWs, Mercedes, and Ferraris. I don't have their number with
me but they are in the yellow pages. If you take your Delorean to him,
please let me know what you think of his work. This is VERY important to
me.

Hello to all, A friend of mine has aquired a DMC.
He says it has the following VIN #:SCED-T26-T8-BD0000215
To my understanding the FIRST VIN was:5000
The only thing I can think of if that the car is a DEMO or CRASH TEST
edition.
It is a manual trans. It looks just like mine in every way that I can
tell.
Does any one know if the VIN is in other places on the car?
Any ideas to this abnormality would be Appreciated.

While driving in Wisconsin today, I spotted a DeLorean at a Classic Auto
Dealership on 1 94. I can't remember the name other than it was something
like Valente Classic Autos. The dealership was mainly classic muscle
cars, but I spotted the DeLorean in the back. There are a few inches of
snow on the ground in Wisconsin, and it looked like it has been there for
some time. I have no ther information, other than I drove past and it
caught my eye.

This is a thread that we had a while back. I dont think it was ever
resolved, it just kinda died out.
Supply and demand is at work here. The supply of Deloreans is low, but
the demand is even lower.
As a owner, if I needed to sell my DMC, I would be stupid to think I
could get 30K+ for mine when a decent delorean could be had for under
$18K. I would have to wait a real long time for a sucker to sell mine
for $30K!
I agree, that the average person who does not know much about deloreans,
or the value, would think it is worth 40K or more, but when you tell
them they can get one for under 20K, do they go and buy one?? I guess
some would, but does that mean we should be educating potential car
collectors that a DMC can be had for under 20K?
Bottom line is, if you want to sell your DMC, you have to be asking fair
market value, and that is based on what others are selling their cars
for.
I'd love for the value to go up, but the only way that is going to
happen is if demand goes up.

Common Problem.. Someone was working on replacement ribbon cables, but
I think it would be just cheaper to replace the entire radio.

This is the exact reason I have "Stated Value" policy.
The car is insured as a secondary car on my regular policy, with a
stated value of the car. I am told that there are some loop holes in
this type of policy, and to be honest I have not really investigated it
too much because the loop hole information came from a conversation with
a agent from a specialty insurance company. (He was trying to push his
policy)
I decided not to use the special policy because of the restrictions.
Anyone know of a special policy that does not have them??
Anyway, I am paying about $1200 per year for my DMC insurance, with a
$500 deductible. Yea, that is a lot but I live in New Jersey!!

Following Lee's train of thought. I couldn't agree more. The price of
Delorean is completely in our control. Patience is the key here. If wee
willing to hold out for a higher price, eventually we'll get it. We have
to sell the cars to people who really want them instead of people who
just want a affordable sports car !
Of course , on the other hand, I'm really glad I could get mine so cheap
! which begs the question, is it really in my (our) best interest to
jack the price up? Personally I didn't purchase mine as an investment
and couldn't care less if the most I could sell it for would be $10 !!
Because I don't want to sell it, I want to drive it !

I agree with Gary Hull wholeheartedly. The market value of any item
of which there is a limited supply is based upon the asking price.
In
the case of Deloreans there is a limited supply which is becoming
more
limited every day. The reality is that if people started
advertising
their cars for higher prices, the selling price of DeLoreans will
increase accordingly. Virtually all the people who admire my D
expect
a Much higher value than what I paid for it.

Further to the insurance thread:
I second Tom Smithson's suggestion of the ITT Hartford. They underwrite
the AARP plan, which I have, and covered my D at what I consider to be a
reasonable premium for "full coverage" with substantial liability. Due to
a break-in, I submitted a claim to them within 30 days after getting the
policy and they were prompt and curteous; settling the claim with no
hassles. I would highly recommend them.

Marc is dead on correct. In our economy both buyers and sellers
contribute to the price of a good. If more people wanted to buy
DeLoreans or fewer people wanted to sell DeLoreans then the price
would go up.
The best way to get more people to want to buy a car is to show it off in
public. Give people the impression that the DeLorean is both beautiful
and reliable. Make car enthusiasts with deep pockets lust for your
DeLorean!
The theory that "holding on" to a car will drive up its value is valid,
but
only if a substantial population of DeLorean owners do the same thing.
Right now there are simply too many DeLoreans for sale.
If you want to sell your DeLorean today you must ask market value for
the car. If you ask more then the car may not sell. The only real effect
that current owners (or even dealers) have on the value of DeLoreans is
how long they hold on to them. If every owner keeps their car for a
longer period, then at any given moment there will be fewer DeLoreans
for sale. Buyers will be forced to pay a higher price for whatever is
left
over.
The oft-repeated theory that "cherry" DeLoreans will be worth a fortune
any moment now is invalid. The cost of restoring a neglected DeLorean
is just not expensive enough to seperate the good DeLoreans from the
crummy DeLoreans by that much. Right now a really nice restoration
might cost you $10 or $20 thousand in parts or labor. That seems like a
lot of money, but it just isn't enough to drive good DeLorean prices up to
the $40 or $50 thousand range. The only things that could cause the
price of good DeLoreans to go that far above crummy DeLoreans are
DRASTIC increases in the cost of parts or labor.
Anyone who wants the value of DeLoreans to increse should do more
buying and less selling. A person who owns two or three DeLoreans,
keeps them for 30 years, and shows them in public frequently is doing
their part! This type of action will raise the value of ALL DeLoreans,
regardless of condition.

A couple people, mostly longtime DML'ers, have emailed me as the
moderator in regards to the "recurring threads", or subjects that seem to
come up time and time again.
The DeLorean Mailing List is contstantly adding subscribers, it was just
a month or so ago that we hit 800 subscribers, this morning we are up to
875. With so many new folks coming in, we are bound to have the same
questions come up more than once. For the longtime readers of the
DeLorean Mailing List, this can get old, but occasionally some new
information will be added from one of the newer readers.
I strongly encourage both new and "veteran" DML'ers to utilize the search
engine set up for the back issues as well as the "Frequently Asked
Questions" created by Knut Grimsrud.

I have noticed that I am actually "moderating" the list more and more
these past few months, weeding out the postings that are off-topic,
personal business or re-hashes of a previous postings. Some of you may
also have noticed that I am using the (SNIP) feature in your replies to
keep the length of individual messages shorter, which therefore allows
more messages in each digest.
As the DeLorean Mailing List continues to grow, I ask for your patience.
It has already exceeded my expectations for it, and now it appears that
it's appeal and growth potential are further reaching than I had ever
