Subject: DML: DMC historical prices
The DMC price story comes up every now and then and I have often been
bothered that the discussion around the prices is often based on
personal opinion and wishful thinking rather than facts. In order to
get a better handle on the facts, I purchased the historical prices
for DMC's since 1981 from CPI (Cars of Particular Interest, the "Blue
Book" for special interest cars) indicating the average selling prices
since about 1981. The data is quite fascinating and I have an article
with all the data in my next DeCO newsletter that I will post shortly.
Some of the basic conclusions that can be drawn from the historical
data is rather non-intuitive. For example, pristine conditions cars
have lost value over the last 15 years the fastest while moderate
condition cars have held up their value the best. Although the value
has been decreasing, when compared with other cars of the time (like
the Porche 911SC against which it was directly compared) it has held
more of its value than it's "competitors." Looking at the data, you
can draw lots of other interesting insights as well.
I'll post another message after I have the newsletter complete and the
next issue uploaded to the web site so you can check out the data
yourself.

I am looking for an original set of DMC fitted sheepskin seat covers, the
condition of the sheepskins is not as important to me as the condition of
the plastic tabs and hooks, which on original sheepskins, have the DMC
logo molded into them. Even if you aren't interested in selling, I would
like to hear from you if you have a set of these.

Subject: DML: Delorean Production
Just a quick question that has me confused...I'm sure there is a simple
answer
but I can't think of it.
Most of the sources that I have seen quote production figures for the D
as
roughly 6539 for 1981, 1126 for 1982 and 918 for 1983, totalling
approximately
8583 total cars produced. However, looking at the production chronology in
the
news for 1982 in particular the numbers begin at 10004 (probably 10000 was
the
first '82) and continue to 11594 (there is also one '82 listed as 12174).
If=
the numbers were assigned to the car build in sequence, they indicate
significantly more '82 model year cars were produced. Is the quoted number
of
1126 for 1982 a calendar year number? What am I missing?
Thanks,

36"X56" Wiring Diagrams are in the mail. They were mailed last week
so you should receive them sometime this week. There were a few request
for over-seas orders. I have ran into a problem with shipping these due
to
size limitations by other countries, but I'm looking into other
possibilites.
If by the end of the week, you have not received your diagram, then
just send e-mail to me. I have a list of ones I sent out but
I may have not received all request due to mail server problems.
Just be sure to just include only DIAGRAM in the (subject) field.
Thanks for the orders and I hope everyone finds them useful.

in 1/24th scale
Hello ALL,
I must say I did not expect quite the reaction to my thoughts about
producing yet another DMC model. It was actually a bit scary to see 100+
letters waiting in my e-mail this week end. Many of you sent me photos,
two sets of plans, some articles and many suggestions.
So here is what I am contemplating.
Instead of just duplicating the efforts of others here on the DML, I
intend to produce a very limited number of complete DMC-12 Model Kits.
These Kits will have their own Printed boxes, complete assembly
instructions, and all the parts to assemble a production DMC-12. The
model kit will have materials to create a realistic burnished stainless
finish. It will feature working doors, hood and Louver. As the project
develops I will post more details and for any one interested images of
the kit and its contents as they are developed. I see the kits being a
very limited edition, perhaps with the model VIN number matching that of
Owner of a DMC and could include license plates too.
any comments, suggestions or help you would like to make please feel
free to post to me direct.

You have the dreaded cracked flex circuit. There is
no fix that allows you to still use the tape deck. I had
been looking into getting the flex remanufactured,
but prices are going to run anywhere from $60 to
$80 just for the part. Installation would be extra.
Currently, you can get a replacement radio for
around $250, but be advised that eventually
(probably sooner than later) the flex circuit in
the "new" radio will crack just like the old one.

I've been covered by State Farm since I bought my car.
My coverage is:
$50 deductible comprehensive
$100 deductible collision
liability
personal injury
emergency road service
uninsured motor vehicle
underinsured motor vehicle
I don't have the liability and personal injury numbers in front
of me, but they are the same as my other cars. I do get
a multi-car deduction. I pay $250 every 6 months, and I
suspend all but comprehensive during the Minnesota
winter. The policy does have a 5000 mile per year
limit, but ther is no limit on use (I can and do drive it
to work). I'm 37 and married, no kids.
My advice for anyone shopping for insurance is to
work with your agent. Educate her on the current
market in DeLoreans, the parts resources, the support
networks. Most agents really do want to sell you the
insurance, you have to show them that they and
their company can make money at it.

Good point ! and that's just the beginning. I had a 914 and after
blowing two original engines I dropped a ford Capri V6 in it (~150hp).
More HP and weight modifications bring on a pile of problems! you need
stronger motor mounts to handle the torque, the transmission takes a
beating, the differential take a beating, the wheel bearings take a
beating, the frame is subjected to more stress, your brakes become
inadequate, your suspension must be modified, the radiator as to be
enlarged, and that's just off the top of my head !!!
I can't see this car taking more than 200hp without a complete redesign.
Of course, 200hp should be just fine for the D and can easily be found
in a modern and light V6. Although not in line with the
American/European legacy of the D, the Japanese have several engines
than would fit the bill. If anyone has toyed with this conversion , I'd
love to know .

Jim you'll get all sorts of answers on how much that car might be worth.
Most will tell you that 25K is too high. While others might disagree, I
believe that if the car is in "near new" shape in ALL aspects, $20K would
be a VERY good price and 22K would not be unreasonable. I think 25K is
at
the high end, but if the car is truly NEAR PERFECT, even that, though
high,
would not be unreasonable.
Just my 2 cents.

If originality is your bag, new Craig radios are available from any of
the parts houses. DMC (Houston) advertised them in DW a few issues back
for $275, I think. You might also look into having the radio repaired.
There was a place mentioned in the past that services Craig and ASI
radios, search the back issues.
Other than that, VERY few manufacturers produce high quality stereos that
fit the dash without modifications. I checked the Crutchfield site
(www.crutchfield.com) and then called and spoke with a tech guy. The only
shaft style stereos they recommend are the Kenwood KRC1007, KRC2007 and
KRC3006 ($199). Of the 3, only the 3006 has CD changer controls, and it
will control Kenwood CD changers KDC-C461 ($260, six disc) and KDC-C710
($330, ten disc).
Good luck!

Price is a hard thing to lock onto. It depends on two important factors
for
the sale of the car. You may get a great deal for the price or just go
for a
long term repair for "replacing of old parts", or updating to keep the
vehicle
in shape for general usage, after the inital purchase. Look for
bargains, and
be in a lucky position for someone or some company either liquidation an
estate for what every reasons, or someone for some reasons for the sale of
their car. I have seen "bombs" for very high prices and I have seen gems
for
very low prices. Remember, the cost is not in the initial investment, it
is
in the duration of the ownership and the up keeping. Anyway good luck
and
happy hunting.

With out seeing the car it is hard to know if that is a good price. I
paid
15K for a near perfect DMC with 20K miles. Even then I put another 5K into
it to make the DMC roadable (sic). The near perfect DMC had most of the
sat
for 17 years problems, Much of what I spent was optional, New Goodyear
tires, new Windshield, new rear Break assemblies, New water pump and all
new rubber hoses, clamps, and a full top end gasket replacement, lots of
bulbs. and relay kits from PJ Grady.
The best suggestion I could hazard would be to see if you can find a
Delorean owner with trouble shooting knowledge. Have this person go with
you to inspect and drive the DMC, take the car to a local DMC repair shop
and have it inspected. Ask to see the cars repair records. Be sure that
every thing mechanical works! If you are paying cash I would start at
maybe
18 to 20K if the car meets your own standards. Just bear in mind that it
is
a 17 year old car and although driven little will have some inevitable age
problems. Rubber and plastics will be greatly degraded, glues and fabrics,
leather will be on the brittle side have lost their tack and flexibility.
The car will require constant maintenance like any other car of the same
or similar age. Most of the people I have seen posting here consider their
DMC a true sports car for recreation, like a hobby. If you are considering
it as primary transportation, that should be no problem, but like any high
use car it will require more repairs.
I am sure other members will have comments as well.
Good Luck

JIm,
Price is based on several factors, "supply and demand" and one's
craziness of
"must have it syndrome". Remember what you paid is not what you get! All
that glitters is not gold. Get owners maintence and repair records. Make
sure that the person or company who works on the car is capable and done a
correct job. All mechanics and technicians are not capable!!! All cars
are
now over 15 years old, material parts such as rubber are getting old, fuel
pump and its' rubber surround componets for examples. No matter how
cheap or
expensive a vehicle is, this is an procedure and operation for all owners
to
comply with! Fuel, brake and clutch lines to name other few. Got my car
low
mileage (under 8,000 miles) and cheap with a perfect interior and
exterior.
Perfect! But everything has be change or replaced for maximum
performance and
for everyday operation. Yes, everyday use!!!
No fun getting stuck for the aggrevation for oneself and the embarrasment
of
the marque. I can drive any where if there is a decent road to drive on.
In
my 22 months of ownership, I have put on over 22,000 miles, with no
poblems.
Driven 1/3 of this country on the time permitted. If I had more time,
I've
would have driven across the country, maybe Canada and Mexico. T-I-M-E.
So, if you are handy, and looking for a hobby or fun, go cheap and go to
through the "motions" of parts changing. If you want a good running
vehicle,
get one as such from a reliable responsible seller who kept up with that
car
or any car.
Anyway good luck and have fun.

The Kits will be a limited numbered edition. from 1-to-100
Right now the price is yet to be set, the price will depend on the cost of
materials and production. It will not be at some OZONE level. So you won't
have to be a millionaire to get one of these kits.
And now the bad news.
When I say limited I really mean that. The first run will be 10 Kits. Kit
No. 1 will go to JFD as my way of saying thanks! Kit No 2. is for Me,
which
leaves 8 kits left. The series is planned for 100 kits total, manufactured
in lots of 10 at a time. I have not decided just how to offer these Kits
past this:
The kits are for DML members exclusively. No Kits will be sold to any one
for resale, like stores etc.
I am leaning towards a first come first serve basis. but I think that
photos of a finished DMC-12 kit is in order before any collectors kit list
is established.
I am also thinking of reserving some Kits for DMC clubs and/or
organizations including one to PJ Grady, one to DMC-One, one for
DMC-Huston
and one for each of the other major DMC-parts and service companies. This
might take another 20 Kits. (these are FREE to the recipients)
Production will depend on the demand up to the collection limit.
At this point there is no RELEASE date set, I will post pictures and
progress reports at the project develops.

Subject: DML: Quick Question
Hi guys,
Im in the market looking for a Delorean but I have a few questions and
hopefully you can answer them. I am a little over 6 feet and I was
wondering if I would be too tall to fit comfortably in the car. Also, I
have heard that these cars can sometimes be unreliable and I was hoping
that some actual Delorean owners could tell me if thats true or not. I
would use this car as a daily driver.
Thanks

Maybe he's on the list and wants to raise values by holding out for more
money? ;)
Seriously, it's hard to tell without seeing the car, and if you ask three
different people you'll get three different answers. Stephen Wynne (DMC
of Houston) sells cars for that amount that he has gone through and
warrantees them, too. If that's the kind of money you're looking to
spend, at least that way you have a known entity.

Suppose we attempt to address the concerns mentioned above, with the
assumption that we use an engine of not much greater weight than stock.
Given this assumption, the suspension should remain OK, and one would
need to:
(1) Use Pearce Design Components' Permaframe. According to the maker's
claims, the engine compartment can handle 310 ft-lbs of torque,
compared to 130 ft-lbs for the stock frame.
(2) Upgrade transmission, brakes, radiator, differential (sorry for my
ignorance, but why would the wheel bearings be subjected to higher
stress?)
(3) Anything else?
Sure it's a lot of work (and a lot of money), but it also sounds like a
good project for a car with a rusted-out frame and dead engine, and a
stockpile of ten or twenty thousand dollars. Opinions?
- -e.
PS: Does anyone know anything about Darryl Tinnerset's D, specifically
what problems (such as those listed above) he encountered? I thought I
recalled that his Chevy supercharged engine put out three or four
hundred HP.
PPS: My personal dream is to retrofit a D with a fuel-cell electric
system. Somehow the style of the D (albeit not the mass) fits nicely
with the idea of electric power. :)

Subject: Re: DML: Re: Radio replacement
To all,
A good system with high output in power (sufficent to drive the
speakers), AM-
FM radio (good reception), with cassette and/or/with CD unit available are
Blaupunkt units. They will "need to be fitted" to into the dash, with
little
rewiring. If you can do mechanical and electrical work, why worry about
installing a unit? The Blaupunkt units cosmetically looks in continuity
with
the rest of the interior, "on or off" over many of the other manufactured
units to chose from. Other manufactures and their units have features and
features on top of features. If feature is what you what to be playing
with
instead of driving, then go for it. Many units looks out of harmony and
in my
opinion they "sounds wrong" not "bad" just "wrong". The subject on sound
is
subjective and argumentive and I will leave it to another time. More
important they don't look right as the original units with the rest of the
interior, grey or black. Newer units installed will have a superior sound
quaility over the original and works egonomically well DURING your
driving.
I, at times can spend over 12 hours behind the Delorean. I my self, I
listen
to ALL good music or material form rock, classsical, jazz, foreign-ethic,
new
media, etc. The "sound" cannot and should not be "fatiguing" beside it
must
sounding right. Many units sound great for short periods of listening.
So
take care in the selection, and becareful of those "bargin" units.
Select
carefully and not settle. Don't be sorry. Remember, you will DRIVE your
car,
donot let the poor or wrong sound DRIVE you "nuts". After all of this,
if you
must and still insist on the original unit with poor quality sound, then
stay
with the DMC/Craig unit.
So have fun driving and listening.

Subject: DML: Lookin for info
TURBO OWNERS,
I was thinking about having my car turbo, either single or twin. Have a
company offering componets to do a twin turbo. All soliciting material
explains the product but not enough tech info.
I have been told many opinions on turboing the car. Anyone out there with
experience on owning a standard non turbo DMC, then had it single or dual
converted? Can you please share some unknown info please. Need to know
if
the conversion is worth the money, or should it be left alone in its
original
form for the performance is not what it should or could be? How is the
performance, REALLY? How is the wear, tear and burden on the engine and
its
componets as time goes on? Any negative or positve comments or opinions
on
this area? How is the fuel consumption, M.P.G.? A new gas guzzler?
Anyway
need all the info please.
If turbo is not the way to go, any other way to raise performance of the
engine? New headers and exhaust componets? How about electronics
ignition
changes, or modification? They do it for other cars out there? Any take
on
this?
Looking for a 1" taller, and 1"- 2" slightly wider tire for the rear wheel
only. This is to be used with the standard fractory recommended front
tires.
Anyone with experience and/or recomendations and opinions on performance?
My
front has been lowered 1 1/2", but the back is still standard.
Anyone on rear spoilers? Seen one or two pictorially, need manufacture or
distributors.
I drive my car everyday at times for long distances. I live in New York
City.
I dare drive this car in Manhattan where driving is stop and go. When I
am
on the highway, I am gone. In the 22 month that I have owned #05508, I
have
driven over 22,000m miles. I need performance. Originality is kept much
as
possible. #05508 is up to date on all modifications, mechanically,
electrically or otherwise. All factory, non-factory parts approved, club,
other owners-members products, suggustions or advice has been installed or
applied. This is done for the best operation and the performance of a
proper
running Delorean car. No expense and headaches have been spared.
This car is on the road everyday, not a show car, but not a "dog". This
car
is clean. My car info is given to aid in the request of turbo, rear
wheel-
tires and spoiler enhancement.
Thanks to all who can help.

Just a note to tell all about my Radio Replacement:
I got tired of my working radio not showing the station I was on
(flex-circuit problem, of course). So I purchased and installed a Pioneer
model# KEH-2929 25wattX2/15wattX4 and it looks and works fine. Cost is
low.
Color of face is dark grey and has rounded edges instead of the original
flat panel, but when I got it in, it actually looks good. Better yet, the
power makes original speakers sound a whole lot better, especially since
I'm
too lazy to put in new ones and make it sound really good. Good luck on
your own choices.

Subject: DML: Delorean problems
Hello,
My '81 Delroean had a new clutch put in before I bought it. Now, at 2,800
r.p.m., on up to 3,000 r.p.m., the transaxle sounds like pennies in a
can. I
have no idea what it could be. The other dilemma is the Lambda light which
came on when I passed a truck. The injector seals are bad, and I am not
too
sure if I can get them at my local Volvo dealer. And I have no idea how to
turn off the Lambda light (someone said there was a reset switch) that
came
on, and never went off. Is the Delorean o2 sensor Delorean specific?
The PRV engine was also used by chrylser in the '90 Dodge Monaco and Eagle
Premier. Anyone ever have their car serviced at these service locations?
I did one other thing: The pulley had swallowed my heat shield so I
removed
it. I wonder if the heat may adversely affect the alternator, alt. wires,
or
other mechanism.

Trevor,
This car is engineered by Mr John Z. Delorean who him self is aover 6'
tall,
therefore head and leg room should not be a problem.
The reliability of these car are very good if there was correct and
continual
upkeeping with by the former or previous owners that you have your fancy
on.
Check and perform all the updates and modification that is necessary,
especially the electrical componets, and the car should not give you any
problems. Do check the car out completely and thoroughly, if you are
planning
to use it daily. You will get away with a semi-decent car if you want to
slow
work on the car as a hobby, and not to be a daily driven car.
I own a Delorean now for the last 22 months, I have put on over 22,000
miles.
I have all the updates and electric componets changed or replaced. I can
jump
into this car and go across the counrty RIGHT NOW if I need to so without
question on reliabilty. I drive this car everyday for work and pleasure.
Like any car, normal maintence is required and you will have no trouble.
Parts are available (over night air from all Delorean parts houses) and
technically cheaper then other name brand cars for the same part. Some
mechanics are reluctant to work on it, others are not. Do keep the over
zealous and "Kamakazi" mechanics away from it, unless they know how to,
or are
familar to work on Deloreans or it's componets.
Anyway good luck.
