After putting off ordering them for some time, I ordered a set of the
repro DMC keyblanks from DML'er Lee Seiler week before last and received
them in yesterdays mail - all i can say is WOW! These are as close to
original as I think you can get, and a much better price than I have ever
seen anywhere!

I had previosuly purchased NOS molded head key blanks for as much as $70
(insert favorite adjective about fools and their money here) and am
thrilled to death that there is now a $10 alternative. I guess that Lee
has already filled at least a hundred or so orders, but if you haven't
gotten a set yet, get them now. Just like Rob Grady's window switch
covers were the DMC-News "Product of the Year" in 1997, these keys are a
strong contender to be the POTY for 1998.

In the interest of keeping things sane on the list, submit key inquiries
to "lseiler@xxxxxxxxxxxx" and not the list! Thanks!

Been there - done that!!

If you are real careful, you can do it yourself or get someone with
machining experience.

If you remove the rear bumper and fashia it will be a lot easier to work
on. Drill and tap at least a 3/8-16 hole if the broken bolt is 1/4" or
similar or 7/16-14 if the bolt is 5/16 or similar. Be careful you do not
do any further damage and use a brand new TiiN bit at slow speed. Also
make sure you use a coolant for drilling. It also would be a good idea
of drill in increments.

Once you have a clean, threaded hole, coat the threads of an aluminum
bolt with either LOCTITE RED or GREEN. Do not use Blue. Thread the bolt
into the hole carefully just deep enough to go the distance of the
original hole. Once the LOCTITe sets up at least 24 hrs (longer if it is
cold), careful grind the head of the bolt off flush with the block. You
now have sealed the hole. To drill a new hole, put the water pump back
on with whatever remaining bolts you have taking care that you don't
break anymore bolts. Use a transfer punch to punch a dimple in the
center of the plug you just made. All that's left is to insert a
helicoil and use a grade8 bolt. While you are at it, I'd fit all the
water pump holes with helicoils and change bolts. Alternatively, you can
drill the block and fit a piece of aluminum rod into the block, but this
is burdensome and you may have a leak if you do not size it correctly.

One big problem I have found with these engines is that the steel
threads of the bolts seize in the aluminum. I have made it a habit of
drilling (carefully) and inserting a helicoil then using a grade 8 bolt.
If you want to retain the standard steel (crappy) bolts and aluminum
threads, use a tap to clean the threads before rebolting and apply some
Permatex antiseize to the bolt. Always torque the bolts with a torque
wrench - do not use an air wrench.

Subject: DML: Twin Turbo Prototype

In reply to the inquiry about the Twin Turbo Prototype:

VIN #502 was use by Legend Industries to develop a drivable, reliable
high performance engine for the DeLorean.  This is same company that
developed the turbo version of the Fiat 124 Spyder in the late
seventies.  I recall that a Legend spokesman described the Fiat
experience as being one of bolting the turbo on and the thing just took
off.  In the case of the DeLorean, he said that they bolted the turbos
on and everything broke!

Over the years, I have been unable to get a complete description of all
of the engine modifications that were made, but do know that it has
forged pistons, a much more efficient fuel management system, lower
compression ratio, and many other items as well.

The car is still at DMC in Houston on consignment, I believe, and was
advertised in DeLorean World a few issues back.  When I last checked the
asking price was 125K.  The interior is a little rough, black, the car
in fairly decent shape for an early production example, with about
37,000 miles on it.  JZD used it as his personal vehicle for about 6
months, I'm told.

Steven Wynn gave me a ride in it a while back, and the performance is
truly amazing!  It will lug around in low rpms and traffic like a pussy
cat, but when pushed, all hell breaks loose!  It is almost scary fast!
I have often thought what a shame it was that the company did not
survive long enough for this engine to enter production.  An equal
shame, however, is that the details of the engine conversion have not
been made available to those of us who would dearly love to duplicate
#502 with their own cars.  It is vastly superior to the turbo
conversions commonly available.  If anyone has access to or any ideas on
how we might acquire this information, I would be very interested in
contributing to the effort.

Subject: DML: New Owner - New Web Site

I'd like to let everyone on the DML know that I have put up web pages
on my DeLorean. The pages can be found at:

http://www.mother.com/~arkham/delorean01.htm

It's just a start. I have a lot work to do on the content, and I'll
rotate the pictures as I get/make new ones. I bought my car just last
Wednesday (the 14th) and a friend took a bunch of pictures of me
buying the car from the last owner (John Roth. Do any of you know
him?) so I'll add those when I get them. They should be fun to see. I
have some pretty good stories to tell about my search for a car,
which I'll have to put up on my web site.. such as an 83 that had an
electrical fire and a car with less than 400 miles on it (which may
still be available) which is tied up in a court case (it
belongs/belonged) to a drug dealer, really!). I don't know how much
general information about the DeLorean to include since many people
found on this list already have excellent sites for that.

I'm wondering if any of the list members are from the Sacramento area.
I know of 3 other cars fairly close to here.  It would be fun to all
meet up sometime.

On to a repair question. The steering on my car is very rough. It a
has rough/grinding feel when I turn the wheel. At 30K miles and still
on the original tires, I know that's a lot of what I'm feeling on the
overall driveability of the car, but still, something else is wrong.
Plus are the original tires worth anything to the hard core
collectors? These tires have a lot of tread left and they look brand
new (no cracking).

Next is the radio. Mine is working 100% (even the cassette) but it's
still an early 80's radio and doesn't sound very good. I would like to
put in a modern radio and CD changer, but since the dash is not made
to take a DIN type stereo and I have no intention of cutting into the
dash, I was thinking of putting the stereo someplace else and using a
remote to control it. Sony has out such a device. The remote is this
strange little control stalk that can be mounted anywhere. Has anyone
done something like this?

I would also like to find a rear rack. Looking back through the DML
archives I saw that a person had a couple of these for sale for $60
each. I can see time when the rack would be VERY handy. Like if you
have a flat on a rear tire and you don't want to stuff your passenger
into the trunk. Plus I'm a cyclist and I'd like to be able to carry my
bike (talk about drawing stares!).

This list has been of GREAT help in the purchase of my DeLorean Thanks
a ton to everyone!

The toy was recalled in some areas for two different reasons.  McDonald's
did originally put out a recall because the tires could come off and be
swallowed by small children (the tires are relatively smaller than the
wheels on the other three BTTF toys from the promotion).  Also, a smaller
recall came after the toy had already made it through its week of the
promotion because the sparks "could ignite".  It's made the DeLorean
fairly
collectible, even though most McDonald's never quit selling the toy.
Since
McDonald's promotions last 5 weeks at a time for most promotions (BTTF no
exception), there was no time to replace the car with a different version,
and to my knowledge, there is only the one version.  Each of the four toys
had their own week, and then the fifth week was to disburse the remaining
stock.  While the toys state "1991" on the underside, they didn't come out
until 1992, as the promotion was delayed.  These were to promote the BTTF
cartoon series that aired on CBS from September 1991 - September 1993.

Anyone wanting brand new copies of this toy still in their original
packaging, please drop us a line!  We have several in stock, as well as
plenty of other DeLorean memorabilia!  Our online catalog can be accessed

I would also be interested in such information.

I was told by Rob Grady that Legend also had a auction at the end, and
may of the parts were sold at that auction.  Rob said he had purchased
some parts at the auction, but I dont know if he has any engineering
drawings.

Rob is also working on a "Legend" restoration.  He has had the car there
for years, and has been making some deals to try and get the parts he
needs to complete the resoration.

I am not sure where he got the car itself, but when I looked at it a few
years ago, it was in bad shape.  I was impressed with the engineering
though!  Much better design than the current aftermarket units.  There
is a lot of plumbing, but it does have dual intercoolers, and a much
better intake than the modified deloreans.

I am guessing that the work and money needed to make this kind of car
may be a bit out of my league!

Lee, are you still interested in working on a improved cold air intake
system?  I will take some pictures of my modified car as soon as I get
it back from Rob.  Dick Ryan may also be able to take pictures.

Subject: DML: Hypothetical Implications of Legend Turbo

I was sad to read the report last week on the DML that the History
Channel's program "Automobiles" is no longer in production.  It is one of
my favorite shows.

Last Sunday evening they showed the story of the Corvette.  One critical
point they repeated several times was that for the first few production
years the Corvette was VERY underpowered.  In fact, the originals only
came with a two speed automatic transmission.  Compared to the top
European sports cars, those early Corvettes were dogs.  As a result the
Corvette was not very popular with buyers, nearly canceled several
times by Chevrolet.

After languishing for years the Corvette finally got some horsepower.
Over the years they gave it more and more powerful engines and better
drive trains.  Sports car fans loved the increasingly powerful cars.
Sales went up, up, up, and the rest is history.

Amazingly enough, today those early, underpowered Corvettes are
among the most collectible.  They are worth a FORTUNE now, many
times their original sticker price.

Based on the Corvette story, it seems logical that John Z. DeLorean
chose to introduce his car with a modest V-6 and a decent drive train,
with plans for a turbo edition after a few years.  If it worked for the
Corvette, it might work for the DeLorean.  Sadly, the turbo version did
not
arrive in time to save his project.

The greatest irony is for those of us who own the original DeLoreans.  If
DMC had succeeded in repeating the Corvette's pattern, today our early
DeLoreans might be achieving the same super collectibility as those early
Corvettes!

A few weeks old, but...

Just spoke to Rob, and we decided to try some snake oil, and see how it
goes.  I dont usualy drive the car too far, but my only concern is the
trip to Ohio.  I hope to drive the car enough by then to get a better
idea of if I should dive it to Ohio or not.

I will let everyone know how it turns out.

Also, while speaking to rob we talked about the DML.  I did not get a
good read on his reaction (if he cared or not) but it seems that he read
some of comments posted on this thread.

If someone is sending him print outs of the DML, please be sure to
include the entire thread, and not just the possibly upsetting items.
In this case, I know he saw the comment made by Gary, and may have seen
Lee's comments agreeing with Gary, but I do not know if he saw the
replies from Rob Hook, James, Dick, John Stiefel, Jack Singer, Myself,
and Lee's second message defending Rob.

Actually, Gary did not say anything bad about PJ Grady, it just seems
like Gary may not be familiar with Grady, and therefore replied to the
message as if I were using just "Some Mechanic".

As a additional note, I think it is good that we do not ever see
comments that any of the DMC service centers have "Screwed" or "Ripped
Off" customers.  It seems that they are all good, honest mechanics.
Most negative messages about any of the shops have been related to
attitude, or personality prblems.

depending on the validity of the new DeLorean project this may still
become the case.  Supposing the new project John Z is working on actually
comes out with his 3 new cars (3, right?) that certainly would boost
awareness and demand for the "vintage" dmc-12.  The question is, which
would be in greater demand, the pristeen concourse cars or the performance
modified ones?

The big difference between Corvette and DeLorean -- deep pockets.  GM has
the
wherewith all to stick with a project through several years of negative
return, modifying the product until it becomes a winner.  Start-ups just
don't.  Even the "brilliance" of someone like JZD can't overcome under
capitalization.  Neither could Tucker or Bricklin or probably a number of
other hopefuls.  Fortunately, it didn't deter them from making the
attempt.
The world is better because they attempted and failed than if they had
never
tried at all.

In reply and defense of Mr. Rob Grady of P.J. Grady, he has a good
operation!!!
His knowledge of the marque is excellent.  His rates and services are
excellent. His staff is super excellent, especially his number one service
technician Mr. Pat Tomasetti.  His whole staff is caring, courtesy and
polite,
if not BYE!   In the area, and the city of New York City that is a hard
thing
to find.  For the Delorean marque which is no longer in production, this
is a
rarity to establish a business on this order only; so therfore I don't
think
he can stay in business all these years if he was a poor operator.

I had dealt with the P.J. Grady outfit for 2 years even prior to my
purchase
of my car.  He was very convincing in making me feel "yes, I too want to
become an owner".   I didnot even buy my, or any car from him.  I didnot
know
him, and he didnot know me, but was extremely helpful.  In the last two
years
of dealing with Mr.Grady and his outfit, THEY have all gone beyond their
dutys.  I can ownly get some my good friends to the same.  For the money
you
can't get any better.

I had an automotive business 15 years ago which was in operation for 10
years
until my divorce.  I dealt with outfits and people as such in the New York
area during that time and the people that I sold didnot come close to PJ
Grady, only a very, very few did.   In New York City, the horrid stories
you
hear all the time: "I've been rip off" by a mechanic or a shop is very
common.
P.J. Grady operates in a manner that they know you as a family member.
In a
business, any business no matter how long the experienced, there are times
where there are unusal cases.  In an automobile, it is alway a constant
thing.
That is why majority of questions raised are seeking other people's
experience
when all else fails.

The Delorean motorcar is a decent car to work on and decent on price for
it's
original parts or owners/club/company reproduced, recommeded parts.  You
want
a real headache and money burner??? Try owning a Rolls-Royce and Bentley
motorcars, or any other exotic motorcars.  You want to see "rip off
artists"
and so called "factory trained and certified technicans"?

I am a LIFE TIME MEMBER of the Rolls Royce Owners Club for the last 26
years.
I seen some poor owners who had their cars repaired by these "mechanics"
and
paid an arm and ten legs for poor services with no recourse available.
In all
fairness to R-R and Bentley motor cars, this problem occurs with all other
marques too.

Anyway, the botom line is I know P.J. Grady and the staff is on the
level.  As
the say: "He's okay, I 'm okay, you and your car will be okay" if you go
to
P.J.Grady.

Hello James,

        Thanks for the plug!......

we have done about 170 sets of key blanks and a dozen two key system in
which DMC'ers sent in duplicates.

As I mentioned before, the two key limit will be curtailed as of Feb 1,
98'. After that we will do our best to fill any request as they come in.

I am working on a way to incorporate the VIN number as part of the key.
Right now the results are a bit shaky, if I can get the process worked out
we will send a "VIN-DMC-KEY" to every blank purchaser, with the VIN number
they included with their original orders. And from that point on, the VIN
will be included in all Blank orders.

BTW the VIN-Keys will be sent "FREE" because although we only charge $20
for the current keys, we seem to be building a small profit, which I will
use to cover the VIN-Keys.

we are now filling. I make no excuse for loosing some of you. I passed the
order processing off to my company thinking that this would guarantee
there
would be no lost orders or payment snaphoos (sic). I was wrong and can
only
explain that Radiance sells software world wide, we get 2000+ e-mails
every
day and have distributed over 200,000 copies of our software. Some where
along the line 3 of you out of 200 got lost??? I will think of some way to
compensate you for our poor service. Perhaps a DMC Sundial wrist watch or
something else along these lines.

Next: we had one complaint about a DMC-Logo key that when cut by the
local
key shop would not work in the vehicle. We are sending a replacement at no
cost, but have to point out that we can't be responsible for the work of
other companies. We also had one complaint that the key was not
satisfactory, and we are replacing the whole order. I mention these two
problems to make the point that the DMC-Key project was intended to be for
our Group of very special people not a simple sale for profits effort. If
it was the Keys would cost at least double what we are asking. So I want
all to be aware that we are making every effort to ensure quality
DMC-Keys.

        AND NOW!  Fanfare plays.......DMC Models.

I wanted to get one of these, and followed another effort to produce a
DMC-12 model using the BTTFN kits and substitute parts to convert the Kit
to an accurate DMC replica. I never did get a model or the additional kit.
threw no fault of the guys working on the current effort.

I acquired all the currently available BTTFN type model kits and see a
nice solution similar to the current effort. I am going to take a run at
producing a 1/24th scale DMC-12 Body, and substitute body to bring the
BTTFN kit to DMC-12 specs, this will include the body, louver and engine
deck, wheel rims...etc.....
Now don't get this wrong, nothing has been done at this point, first I
have to create a master with the kit parts and make the changes, then cut
a
die and make a few trial parts to see what the results are. If any one has
comments Ideas or (I hope, I hope)...a clear set of dimensional drawings
it
could be very helpful. I do have some but it's hard to tell how accurate
they are.
If by some chance I get to a point where I can produce an accurate part
my
inclination would be to collect a number of the BTTFN kits add the upgrade
parts and make them available in much the same way we did the DMC Keys.
I should make it very clear at this point that if all the above
materializes, the parts we would make would not be soft vinyl plastic kit
like plastics. The additional parts would be of very high grade Epoxy and
would require miniature plastic kit experience to use them. My thoughts
are
that each replacement body/parts would be molded with parts from the kit
it
comes with. This would ensure that all the parts start out fitting the
kit.

Very nice website and it looks like a nice car.
The "grinding" may be the nylon bushing is dry where the  steering column
passes through the firewall. I had this problem, which sounded and felt
terrible, but a little WD-40 took care of it.

Your site also references the reasonable insurance cost of the Delorean
which I have found to be the one Bigggggg drawback to the car. I'm 45,
married, with no accidents or tickets in 10 years and the insurance is
still $1200.00 a year. I have a Corvette and it is less than half of that.
Does anyone out there have any suggestions or am I the only one with this
problem? I was reading in some old D.O.A. issues about a group club
insurance program. What happened to this? I have looked at some of the
collector car insurance companies but the restrictions on mileage and
driving would ruin the fun of the car.

Steve Brodsky's reply explained the proper repair with great detail, but
I'd like to add a few comments.
You say that you drilled and tapped the hole and have clean new threads,
but unless you are extremely good and extremely lucky with the drill,
you probably damaged the threads.  The threads will probably strip out
when you torque the bolt and you'll have to start over and install a
helicoil.
It's not unusual to have bolts penetrate the water jacket, in fact most
head bolts do.  Sealing is not a problem since the normal gasket seals
the parts, and proper torquing of the bolt seals the bolt head.  You are
only sealing 15 PSI.
I've seen teflon tape recommended for many things including copper
tubing, but it's designed for water pipes.  It isn't even approved for
gas pipes.  Don't use it!
If you want to do the job right, Steve's reply is the one to use, and
always use neversieze on all the bolts that you remove.

In December I visited Darryl Tinnerstedt in Olympia, WA to pick up some
parts for my DeLorean from him.  While there he showed me his two DMCs and
on one he had had the wheels chromed at about $120 per wheel and they were
gorgeous. Not exactly stock but they just have to be washed not
repolished.
Think about it.

Depends on what you are looking for.  I have both an 81 Delorean and a
1974 Triumph TR6 that have insurance that cost $300 total for both.
This is a stated value policy for Classic Cars.  It also means that
there is a limitation on how far and when you can drive your car.  Not
good for a daily driver but excellent if all you want to do is drive on
weekends, holidays, to club meets etc..  Just pick up a copy of Hemmings
Motor News and there are numerous companies to pick from.

I was at the Barrett-Jackson auction over the weekend and talked with
some people from the Grundy Collector Insurance Company. I was VERY
impressed their rates and simple restrictions. I was quoted about $540
per YEAR with NO mileage restrictions, the paperwork is at home now, but
I believe there was also NO deductible. The car cannot be a "daily
driver", must be appraised and you must prove that you own another car
for regular transportation.

Here are some ppsibilities for you for insurance:
I know many list members use State Farm with low rates (depends on the
state, they won't insure mine in NC)

I just recieved a quote from Geico, and they have fairly low rates. you
can get a quote online at www.geico.com

I currently use Allstate (and as a 22 year old with only my D insured
there, it is only $80/month)

Hope this helps!
