Now for the curiosity:
On the bottom of the steering column there is a round, green sticker with
two
numbers hand written in blue ink on it: 5524 (My VIN) and 7526(?). I just
noticed this for the first time today and thought it was interesting.

I have a copy of Stainless Steel Illusion for sale. Excellent condition.
Two detractions: (1) slightly yellowed page edges (I guess from finger oil
from people thumbing through the pages; barely noticable) and (2) dust
cover
slightly scuffed on the back (perfect on the front). Asking $200 plus
shipping.
I'm selling because I'm interested in the book as an information resource,
not a collector's item, and I just found a beat-up copy of the book, so I
don't need my high-quality copy anymore.

Okay, I read through the archives (keywords: high idle) and the only
suggestion
I found for curing a high idling engine is to make sure the throttle
spindle
is
snapping back all the way. Well, I checked it, and it is. So, any other
suggestions for getting my idle down? The idle hovers around 1000rpms,
and also, I think the car starts up with too much of a blast, which I'm
suspecting is a related problem.
Second question (maybe related). Anyone out there replaced their fuel
injection
system with a carburetor? Or considered the idea? If my fuel injection
system
has failing parts in it, I'm thinking maybe I ought to just be rid of it
in
the
interest of keeping my life simpler. Any opinions?

The first thing I would check is the fuel pump. Do you hear it
running? There are lots of ways to troubleshoot that if you do not hear
it.

Not a good idea, especially in CA. Check the law, I got my current D
from a Dr. in SanJose because he had altered his exhaust ( twin
turbos ) and couldn't get it licensed because of that. Didn't matter
whether it met the air quality standards or not, it was not the
approved exhaust. If you did something like you suggest your Lamda
system would be inoperative. JMO

some time intent on learning more before doing a serious=20
search of my own car. Being in northern New England=20
(Delorean Siberia) I didn=B9t expect to see many/if any Ds=20
without extensive travel. To my surprise, I have found >
an hour away. Its a dealer (home, not francise) car that was=20
bought at auction. No history available. Price $12,750 firm.=20
Here=B9 what I found:
=20
First impression: Wow! What a good looking car! I=B9d say the=20
overall condition is 8.5 or better. No dings in body panels,=20
facias repainted, new tires, interior very good, rear hatch=20
louvers perfect, doors operate nicely and fit well. Mileage=20
at 37K appears to be accurate. I spent nearly an hour giving=20
it a good go over, Closer examination revealed some faults=20
though none seem major. Here are the deficiencies:
Interior:
Instrument cluster housing padding cracked
Power mirrors not working
Horn not working
Front hood release cable messed up (still was able to open=20
it)
Head liner slightly soiled
Power windows a little erratic/sloppy, especially passenger=20
side, also PS is scratched
Seats - slight cracking of leather - needs a good treatment=20
of hide food
2 wire plug disconnected at speedo cable junction box -=20
driver foot well
Original radio
Glove box lid latch is hit or miss
Door seals torn in a couple of spots=20
Exterior:
Power antenna (rear) broken off
Alloy wheels need to be bead blasted and repainted
Mixed wheel nuts on driver side rear hub, one broken?
Lower front grill (metal mesh below bumper) rusted
Engine compartment:
No =B3paint dot=B2 evidence of upgrades or recall fixes
No evidence of throttle cover plate fix (?)
Jury jig(?) jumper wire at electric box on driver side fire=20
wall
Clean but not perfect, probably hasn=B9t been steam cleaned
Small stain/puddle on floor directly below rear of engine
Forward compartment:

Underbody (from what I could see laying on the floor!):
SS braided hose running down driver side of steel center=20
chassis, new looking
Front sway bar/chassis plates installed (welded in,=20
undercoated)
Running (heated garage):
First start - 2 attempts required
Subsequent start about 20 minutes later - hard starting with=20
10 -12 attempts required, foot off throttle, behaved and=20
smelled flooded. Ran rough when finally started and cleared=20
up quickly
Surge at idle
Driving (25 degree outside temperature):
Shift lever feels pretty notchy/not very precise at rest
Clutch fine
Good, smooth acceleration
Shifts up and down well enough underway
Brakes strong and smooth
Steering wheel pulls to left and is not centered. Hands off=20
confirms alignment is out
Steering wheel shudders, not extreme but clearly not right
Still surging at idle after a 5 minute drive though probably=20
not fully warmed up
So, I have I found a decent car for the price? Are any of=20
these faults particularly expensive to correct? Is there any=20
way to find what recall/upgrade work may have been done via=20
the VIN?
I not expecting a perfect car and am accustomed to doing=20
some trouble shooting and repair/upgrade (also own a Range=20
Rover and Sunbeam Alpine) on my own. I don=B9t want to pay=20
good money for a problem car however. Thanks for any advice=20
and pointers might forward to me.

I would like to attend a DOA Expo in my DeLorean, however I am having
trouble getting excited about taking a trip to Saint Louis. It's a long
way to drive from Northern CA and I don't know much about it.
Perhaps someone more familiar with Saint Louis could share some info on
what there is to do there (besides the D expo and the Arch) to encourage
those of us far away to attend.

I don't know why you'd want to do this. The K-Jetronic is a good fuel
injection system and, generally, works. :} I wouldn't consider going to
all this trouble just to fix a high idle.
There is an idle speed adjuster screw somewhere in the fuel injection
system, but I don't know where it is. It's supposed to be set all the way
down under most conditions, maybe yours has gotten screwed up some how.
The only reason I can think of wanting a carburetor over a fuel injection
system is if you are planning to design your own turbo system. You can
run higher boost pressure with a carburetor engine since the vaporization
of the fuel cools the mixture. Carburetors have some application in high
performance cars, but for normal street driving, there really isn't much
advantage to them. Unless you are planning a complete fuel system
re-engineering I wouldn't fool with it.

If you're speaking of a bunch of diagonal scratches in a line, I have the
same problem on my car. Rob Grady indicated that it was probably a
missing
piece of padding inside the door. I plan to takle this problem soon (with
in a couple months) I'll try to take some photos to make available when I
do this, so watch for them if your interested. Any advice offered on the
subject would also be welcomed.
On a repair note, I'd like to remove the clamp (part 108297 item 10
section
840 in the parts manual) becuase it's rusting and either paint it or buy a
new one. I can't however get enough leverage to remove the screws which
are obscured by the torsion bars. I'm afraid to get too close to the
t-bars with my screwdriver, because I might accidentally score them.
Anybody have tips for removing these screws? (short of removing the t-bars
of course) Am I being overly cautious about the t-bars?

Having read the posts on radar and the Delorean I must add this post

For those of you that have heard this story, scroll on down.) I was
speeding
(about 75 to 80) on I-40 a few years ago and ran upon a Tennessee State
trooper running radar. He pointed me to the side of the road. I had my
lic.
and reg. in hand as he came up to the car. He asked if this was a
Delorean. I
got out and started talking to him about the car. I opened the engine
compartment and the luggage compartment. Showed him everything one can
show of
the car. He even sat down in it and closed the door. As he hadn't put ink
to
paper yet I thought this was a good sign. He then asked the question that
we
have all heard at least a thousand time. "When you go 88.5 mph do you go
back
to the future?". Without missing a beat I said,"If it did ,do you think I
be
here talking to you?" He laughed and gave me back my lic and told me to
have a
good day! I cant add anything to how the car shows up on radar but I can
tell
you that it was the funniest ticket I ever got out of. My advice to others
with the ticket in hand is to go to court and try and get sent to traffic
school. A few hours of your time is worth not having a ticket on your
record.

Yokohama has just produced a new batch of 235V60-15 and 195v60-14 in =
their AVS (High performance - all season) tires. The ride will probably =
be a little stiff but they should stick like glue to the road this =
summer. The tires have been on back order for over six months. Order =
them right away they will not last and who knows when they will produce =
another batch.

Robert-
The inflation of a tire really has a insignificant role in speedo
and mileage calibration. As long as the tire is near the recommended
tire pressure and follows the guidelines for the correct tire size, the
instruments should be correct. This is especially the case for the
low-profile tires used by the D'. For example, a fully inflated (44psi)
Eagle GT II P195/60R14 with a tread depth of 4/16" (half-worn) would be
roughly equivilant to a new tire (8/16" tread, I think) that is slightly
underinflated (35psi). Point being, it doesn't matter. For improved
ride and wear without sacrificing gas mileage, take the recommended max.
inflation for the tire (stamped on the sidewall) and subtract 7-9%.
Also, rotating your tires helps tire life *tremendously*.

I Contacted the people there..
They have printed 2000 tickets.. But they have said that they will
print more if necessary.. I don't think this is the kind of raffle
where your winning chances are exceptionally high, but rather one where
your main intention is to support a Catholic High School, and have fun
at the same time.
I haven't made up my mind yet..
About the deadline.. As he said they would print up more tickets if
necessary, I assume that they don't have a definite deadline, as they
want to sell as much as possible, but you would have to ask him about
that..

Just thought I'd mention that I saw a De Lorean on a funny video program
(Something like Americas Funniest Home Videos).
Some poor guy was trying to open the driver door on a D, (apparently for
the firs time) and struggled for a while, until he succeeded and the
door opened, and hit him in the head, which knocked him out. (or so it
appeared)
Has anyone seen this? Or does anyone have it recorded?

HO boy a chance to tell a speeding story (James it's Delorean related)
Right after I suffered threw my speedo and sudden engine failure problems
and after installing a set of PG's Lowering front springs I had a business
meeting in Salt Lake city UTAH. Which from San Francisco is a trip of 500
odd miles on I-80. The trip takes you threw Sacramento, CA., then Reno
Nevada and out I-80 to the intersection of I-80 and I-95 at Winneemucca
where Nevada ends and Utah starts. You wind threw Nevada until you get to
Wendover which is a last chance gas and watering hole. I say last chance
to
get gas because for the next 90 miles it is just desert, salt flats and
the highway, a highway that is almost as straight as any in the world.
While gassing up and answering questions about my DMC-12 I noticed a
bright
canary yellow Viper at the next pump. The driver left about 10 minutes
before I did with a roar of the V-10 and spinning tires, heading out of
Wendover for salt lake. There is a truck weigh station and Highway patrol
office just down the hill from the standard station where I was gassing
up.
I left maybe 10 minutes or so later and left Wendover at a civil 55MPH,
but
once out on the road I let out my baby to see what she could do (this was
at 3AM with almost no traffic). I don't recall what my RPM read in 5th but
I was cursing towards Salt Lake City just as fast as my Dmc would go. All
I
can say is that it was a great ride, every now and then there would be a
truck or car, alone in the pitch black in a pool of it's own head lights.
Passing was a real charge, It was like passing a parked car at 80MPH. Of
course I was only doing 88MPH according to my speedometer. It's about 50
miles from Wendover to Low, this took about 30 minutes, I slowed to 55MPH
to go threw Low which is hardly more than a few run down shacks, and once
out of Low cranked back up to 5th gear. From Low to Garfield is about 40
miles, after maybe 10 minutes I see blue and red flashing lights ahead,
and
I knew that I was nabbed! well by the time I decided I would just pull
over, I am passing the Utah state police patrol car now on the side of the
road behind the Yellow Viper! Time to keep going I say - and did, with in
a
minute I was out of sight. The next Gas up is just out side of Salt Lake
and has an all night diner, I decided that this would be a good place to
hid, so after gassing up a very empty like 8.4 miles to the gallon?
So I am in the diner having breakfast some 45 minutes after leaving
Wendover! and this Utah state police officer comes in and sits down next
to
me. He notices my Delorean keys on the counter, Looks me over a bit,
orders
coffee and asks if I mind showing him my DeLorean.
I was sure he was going to arrest me, like ABatt my cop wanted to see
every
thing and kept mumbling "I don't get it" over and over, Finally he said
my
car was a real honey, and told me I was a very luck sailor! and left.
About this time in pulls the Yellow viper as I am closing my Door. The
driver a young guy maybe 30 walks up to me and knocks on my window. I open
the door which surprised him.
He wanted to know "What have you got in that thing!" He did not know it
was
a DeLorean!
I told him which surprised him. He then explained he was doing 94MPH when
the trooper caught him. He got a $494 dollar ticket (he lived in Salt lake
City). he said that the Trooper and he were on the curb side of his car
when they both saw my 4 head lights appear and that up until I was about a
100 feet from them they could not hear a sound and that when I went by it
sounded like a high pitched whine and sucking wind, The trooped according
to the Viper driver said something like "What the Hell is this" and
started
for his car before realizing that I was already out of sight! Well at
13,024 feet a minute (just an average guess -2.4 miles) it would not take
long to putter down the road.
Well I don't do that often, and yes it was stupid, and dangerous to me and
every one else! yet I am now very confident in driving my D and I know
just
how it behaves in all speed ranges. Do I recommend any one else try it?

At 130-140 MPH, I'm sure it is. :} The fuel required to maintain speed
goes up exponentially as speed increases, whereas distance traveled goes
up linearly. At more normal speeds the D gets about 15-19 city and about
25-28 highway.
