I replaced my headliner five years ago and it still looks fine. I picked
up
the replacement material at the local fabric store. It is padded, matches
the original gray and cost me about $25 to do the whole job. -SweatyEddy

PJ Grady has replacements with a fiberglass skeleton.  Has less problem
with
absorbing moisture so the bonding lasts longer.  It looks perfectly stock.

Rich,
Most of the list members have mentioned trapped air in the cooling system,
this is the number one cause of over heating. It is very unlikely that
there is a water pump  temperature gauge or thermostat malfunction.
Someone
else suggested to tighten the head bolts, DO NOT TIGHTEN THE HEAD BOLTS.
If
you are unsuccessful in correcting the problem contact us directly.

Mike,
We have encountered many lug nuts installed with 130 psi air guns and have
always been able to remove them without any damage. Make sure the tires
are
in full contact with the ground, get out your breaker bar add a length of
plumbing pipe, I use a 4' length, and go for it. When reinstalling 60 ft.
lb. is spec.

Albert,
The first company formed to develop and manufacture the DMC-12 on October
24, 1975 was the DeLorean Motor Company. There were many other names
created for lots of corporate and tax reasons, among them were DeLorean
Manufacturing Co, DeLorean Sports Car Partnership, Composite Technology
Corp., DeLorean Motors Limited, DeLorean Research Limited Partnership,
DeLorean Motor Cars of America, and DeLorean Motors Holding Co. All of
these names were in one way or another part of the DeLorean Motor Company.
Hope this clears up the confusion.

Tom,
We sub out our headliner work and have found that the foam backing on all
headliner materiel has a usable life of 5 to 8 years. Exposure to extreme
heat and humidity will shorten the life of the material. If the core
material that the headliner is attached to is not cleaned completely or an
inferior adhesive is used you will wind up with premature failure. It
sounds as if your awful looking headliners may be due to an awful
installation.

Claude,
One BIG problem with retrofitting the Volvo B 28F is that when it is
installed in the DeLorean many items that are right side become left sided
and left sided become right sided. Remember the Volvo version is front
engine rear drive and the DeLorean is rear engine rear drive. It sounds
strange but if you check
the Volvo manuals and look at the Volvo set up there are distinct
differences between the two. There are also deference's in the rear end
mountings that will not allow the Volvo version to accept the DeLorean
auto
and 5 speed bellhousings and as you had mentioned, the lower casing (oil
pan
mounting) in the Volvo will prevent it from fitting in the DeLorean frame.
Besides why would you want to go through all that hassle when there are
plenty of complete DeLorean PRV virgin engines sitting in the warehouse in
Columbus.

  Hi Marty,

Sorry, But I'm a little new to this.  What do the brake lines cost.  We
just
got our DeLorean in Oct. and I've been busy trying to do a few fix and
repair jobs on it.  I've heard of the SS brake lines but don't know much
else.  I would be interested in them however.

Dad ran water from the garden hose through the system to clean it out
(that's nothing damaging is it?), so the coolant didn't leak out, but
rather
forced out by the water. That's also when we realised how much filthy muck
was in the system.

(SNIP)

Thanks for the info. After we bleed the system and re-fill it with the
water/anti-freeze we're going to take the car for a short drive, then see
how it fairs. On the way home from Sydney, the temp. stayed rougly around
the 160 mark (according to the gauge), so I don't think there's a problem
with overheating on the car.

With all of the information on PRV engines, and other uses, I am
surprised someone has not tried to swap parts to improve the DMC
performance.

Can we put a set of 24V heads on our PRV?  Can we upgrade the Ignition
and Fuel Injection to something more modern?

Keep the block the same, this way we know it will fit.

DeLorean to be given away at Pius Xl Auction

The Pius Xl High School annual auction is going to be raffling away one
of the most unique and unusual automobiles ever made, the DeLorean DMC-12.

Raffle tickets will be made available to all who wish to participate. You
need not attend the auction in order to win. Tickets will cost $40 a
piece and 3 for $100. All proceeds go towards Pius Xl school operations.

Pius Xl thigh School is the largest non-public high school in the state
with an average enrollment of approximately 1500 students. This year
marks the 15th Anniversary for the "Touch of Class Auction". Chad Sorce,
Auction Coordinator, has said that this was going to be a night full of
surprises, but the DeLorean adds to the fun. "We are looking forward to
the best auction ever, the addition of the car just enhances that
possibility." "We would like to thank Terry Briscoe, father of Chris '86,
who has generously donated this fine collectible cars' said an
appreciative Sorce.

The auction will be held on March 27,1999 at the Clarion Hotel and
Convention Center on South Howell Avenue.

The DeLorean DMC-12 was a concept car built by John Z. DeLorean, the past
president of Pontiac and Chevrolet. In 1975 he decided to build what he
called, the "first practical sports car." The Car, which was built in
Northern Ireland featured a stainless steel body, a rear engine and the
trademark gull wing doors. The car went into production in 1981 and was
produced until 1983. In that year DeLorean Motor Company declared
bankruptcy and the British government seized and destroyed the remaining
body dies.

There were a total of 8,583 DMC-12's produced with roughly 6,000 still
considered road worthy. The car is probably the most affordable and
collectible sports cars on the market today.

Sorce has contacted John DeLorean about the possibility of attending the
auction to pull the winning ticket. He says that although he is unsure
about his schedule he will provide an extra bonus to the winner of the
car. Mr. DeLorean will send a letter and autographed picture to be
presented to the winner.

Any interested party can contact Pius Xl High School to purchase tickets.
All inquires should be made to Chad Sorce, Special Events Coordinator at
(414) 290-8172. Photos of the car will soon be posted on the Pius Web
Site at:

Thanks to all those who attended the meet/show at the Scottsdale
Pavilions this past Saturday night. In attendance were:

The Atkinson family
Ken Barre
Mark Dinunzio and Pam Sharon
James Espey
The Federicos
Ryan McCaffrey
Chris Rabalais
Ace Underhill

We had a complete range of DeLoreans show up, too. There were two each of
the 81, 82 and 83 model years, both black and grey interior cars and both
five speeds and automatics. Many people remarked that they had never seen
so many DeLoreans in one place at one time.

Second Saturday is next on January 9th. There will be a reminder message
sent out, and I need confirmations at that time so I can call them again
to reserve spaces so we don't have to get ugly again with the Pontiac
Club.

After that, our next event is scheduled to be the "Street Classics
Cruisin' Car Show" at Manistee Town Center (55th Avenue and Northern, SW
corner) on FEBRUARY 7, 1999. We fit into the "Foreign Sports Car" class
and the entry fee is $5. The first 100 entries get a dash plaque and the
judging is by the participants. First and second place trophies and best
of Show.

Thanks again to all who came out and I hope to see those of you that
couldn't make it!

Marc,
You have brought up an interesting subject, something we have been
researching for a while. Several years ago we bought a 1980 Volvo 260 GLE
to research the relationship between its PRV and the DeLorean counterpart.
Two years ago we purchased a 1990 Volvo 760 GLE with the updated PRV-280,
this updated version of the B-28F contains 90's technology. The result is
more horsepower, higher compression ratio, greater torque, and better fuel
efficiency. Who knows what the future holds for our reliable, trustworthy,
and loyal friend; the PRV.

Subject: DML: Trailing arm

Hello Everyone:
Define a great Delorean mechanic: Eudell Lusher, Eudell's Auto
Service, Merriam, Kansas! (I have no financial interest in the business)
Eudell worked on my first Delorean a number of years ago and when I
bought my latest one this past summer, I took it to him for some
repairs, refurbishing etc. I have detailed the list of things needed to
bring this latest one up to date. Well, I, along with others, have been
reading with great interest (and trepidation) this most recent thread of
the saga of the trailing arm bolts. I got so concerned that I called
Eudell yesterday to set up a time to bring my car in to have the bolt
checked. Instead of telling me a time, he said:
"I checked that the first thing when you brought it in in August.
Yours are fine." Whoa!
So, I usually don't recommend ANYONE, cause as sure as I do,
something bad will happen and I'll get blamed for the actions of the
person I referred. But, I was very impressed with this little tidbit.
(He also rattled off the checklist of little things that can become
major things on a Delorean and he had done them all..or checked them
all...on my car without any suggestion or direction from me.) Eudell was
a lead mechanic for the Ford dealership here in the KC area that was
also the Delorean dealership. He received factory training, at the
service center in California, I believe. He has operated his own shop
for 10 to 15 years, now. I would say anyone in the midwest US would be
well served to have their Delorean worked on by Eudell. He is always
terribly busy, so if you're in a hurry, he's not for you. But if you
want it done right and up to specs, he's your man. He's in Merriam,
Kansas which is about in the middle of the Greater Kansas City
Metropolitan area. His phone is 913-677-4777. De Miller, Kansas City,

From: "Larry C. Hildreth" <Hildreths@xxxxxxxxxxxxxx>
Subject: DML: DMC Headliner

I encountered the same difficulty when seeking to replace the headliner in
my DeLorean.   For those unfamiliar with the problem it is essentially
this.  While considerable advancements have been forthcoming in automobile
technology, headliner material continues to be bonded to a thin foam liner
which is prone to dry rot or the adhesive drys out allowing the material
and foam liner to separate.  The result - a droopy interior headliner!
How
long the headliner will last depends on the quality of workmanship at
installation and the type of weather (environment) you subject your pride
and joy.  The hot desert environs of the Southwest (Phoenix for example)
will raise really havoc with the headliner, not to mention the binnacle
and everything else in the interior.

O.K. to the point.  I went to a noted local automobile interior shop and
expressed what I consider the futility of installing new headliner that
basically in five to ten years would take on that same rag tag droopy
appearance that I was replacing.  The shop foreman looked at the interior

inserts, the deep contours and the need for a material that was both
durable, but flexible and able to stretch.  We ended up using a very high
quality trunk liner/ pattern - automat, color - grey by Jackson Fabrics.

You install it just as you would the original with 3M spray interior
adhesive.  It looks great and should wear like iron.  I've had it on for
two years now and no problems.  This is not the heavy coarse material that
you envision many trunk liners.  The grey is very close to the original
grey of my car which was darker than later models due to early vin and
black interior.

Suggest a wire brush to get the old rotted foam off of the interior
inserts.  Also, the rear most insert (above the back window) may require
some stiffening to properly mold along the top of the rear window.   Rob
Grady is a good source for How to do it.  Also, I believe he sells fibre
glass inserts which are stiffer than the fibre board ones that came with
our cars.  Good luck!  =

The fact that it is one piece should solve the separation problem.

 Hi Marty,

I am one of the Delorean owners who got a set of braided stainless break
lines.
I got the fronts installed but have put off doing the backs as a winter
project. I can tell you there is a big difference on the road. By example
on the way home from a NCDMC meeting in an intersection I had a not-head
on
a bicycle dart out in front of me against the light! I hit the breaks ASAP
and left rubber right up to an inch of the guy. I actually thought I had
hit him but did not. I went back to see where I stopped,  and found that
the front tires had grabbed and stopped 20 feet sooner than the rears.
which left 10 feet of marks.

There is no doubt in my mind what ever that these break lines work better
than the OEM units.

Just when I got all the oil leaks stopped beneath the car, the passenger
side
torsion bar has obviously malfunctioned.  I have heard it creaking for a
time
now, but today, I have a very heavy door that wants to slam shut!  The bar
itself will move front to back a good 3/4 of an inch.
Can anyone offer any help or suggestions.  I have searched the archives
but
all I could find is sagging door problems.  I live in Memphis if anyone is
close and would like to see Elvis, and help me fix it.

Joe,Thanks for the info,on the differences between the Delorean engine

the top
end of the engine cooked pretty good, but the engine still hand spins
over,but
I was just thinking of picking up a volvo 240DL,with the PRV6,and at
least use
the complete fuel inj. system, would that still work? And about the back of
the
volvo V6 is there some way to make it fit? Also is it just the lower Girdle
that holds the crank in that has to be replaced? Also I can't justify
spending
$4000.00 for a motor, when the car is worth about $9000.00.      Thanks

Joe,

It seam to me that if a Delorean owner wanted to some how get more
performance from a DeLorean, they should go get a brand new engine in the
box and take it to a speed shop and have them do every thing possible to
increase power, and reliability.

I, too, was surprised by the "tickets will be made available to all who
wish to participate" line.  EVERY non-profit car lottery I have ever seen

Subject: DML: THERMOSTAT REMOVAL & FAN SWITCH

I'm having a slight heating problem with my 'D' and want to remove the
thermostat so that I can check its serviceability.  At first glance, to
remove the thermostat seems a real nightmare especially as it appears I
need to remove a portion of the intake manifold.  Is there an easier way.

Lastly, I have a suspicion that the fan switch is inoperative.  I have
immersed it in boiling water an placed a multimeter across the contacts
without any response.  Is this the right process for checking the switch.

Thank you in anticipation.

Also the metal panels that are just under the trailing arm bolt, do I

to cut them out to get access to the trailing arm bolts.  What is their

Well, if the bar isn't working, you've probably got a shattered t-bar.  If
you can move it, it's either in two pieces, or isn't secured.  There is a
small area where the t-bar is obscured by the roof, it's possible it broke
there.

Open up your louvers, and unscrew the three screws securing the little
black
plastic cover directly above the rear window.  You'll be able to see the
t-bar brackets for both sides.  If the bracket is still screwed in nice
and
tight, loosen the bolts securing it just slightly.  if the bracket is
under
torque, your bar isn't broken.  If, after loosening the bolts, the bracket
is moving freely (however limited the range of motion may be), you can
pull
the bolts off, remove the bracket, and the end of the t-bar will most
likely
come with it.

Good luck!

BTW: I got my replacement t-bar from Bob Miller (1000mil@xxxxxxx) at much
less than NOS pricing. I'm pretty sure he has more.

That route is very expensive!!

If I can go to a junkyard and buy a "donor" motor for under $300 and use
the heads, intake, fuel injection, etc from it to increase the HP of the
DMC, Why would I spend $$ to have a speed shop rework a motor?

I think the possibilities (on the surface) look good enough to
investigate... Too bad I dont have the resources!

The best way to check the bolts is to "spin" them.  Make sure they are
not bent.

If you need to loosen them up, use a torque wrench to secure it.  I am
told by PJGrady that if you make them too tight you will damage the
bearing.

The metal panels keep water away from the trailing arm bolt..  I would
not remove them.

I should have went to my high school reunion!!  Check the archives for
the "Chick Magnet" thread...

Subject: DML: Sad note

I haven't written to the list in awhile but the last time I did it was
because I was excited that my father and I had purchased a DeLorean which
was to be our hobby car. Unfortunately my father passed away in his sleep
at 76 years young exactly one month and one week after we drove the car
home. But for that month and week we were both young again and having a
blast cruising it around town and tinkering with it in the driveway. The
night he went to sleep I asked him if he wanted to drive it for his first
time but he said no because his shoes were too big! That was my dad and
my friend. For all of you fathers and sons out there with your DeLoreans
enjoy every moment together as there is no greater joy than a father/son
relationship. How soon and unexpectedly they can be gone.  I was lucky to
enjoy mine for my 40 years and will always treasure our moments together.
Of course I will miss him as my co-pilot and not seeing him in the
passenger seat.... Fil Vigil.

If you live in an area that requires annual emission tests you're really
limited as to what modifications can be done. Having collector license
plates gets us out of emisson tests where I live. All the PRV parts that
would enhance engine output to a degree worth the cost and t labor are
from
European cars that are non-conforming to US regulations. Turbocharging
doesn't upset the original design of the lamba enhanced fuel injection and
is still the easiest way to gain a bit of horse power. An example of using
used parts from a junker late model Volvo would still require a lot of
labor
and restoring the cylinder heads alone could be very expensive. Warped
heads
can't be shaved because the timing chain cover wouldn't match up to them.
The camshafts run through the center of the heads and if the warp is bad
enough the cam bearings wouldn't line up.
