Congratulations. I could have saved some money when I replaced my door
struts
by buying the complete package on the day. I Almost lost an ear (from the
trunk struts letting go) before I realized that a complete change was in
order. Please get them from one of the 'D' suppliers, there is a
difference.
As for shop manuals (and parts lists) again all of the suppliers have
them for
sale. I suggest that you bite the bullet and buy a complete set of
DeLorean
Worlds from the DOA. They are by far, the best reference guide and 'how
to'
that exists for the 'D'. Good luck, and enjoy your car, Joe

Nothing. The original plan was for DMC to offer a 25-year warranty on the
panels against rusting. This was something that JZD thought up as a
promotional gimmick. They didn't offer the warranty, but the panels still
aren't prone to rusting unless they encounter a reducing agent, which will
separate the component metals and eliminate the stainless property.
Chlorine supposedly is bad for them too.
On the subject of engine swaps:
I have also heard of one person putting a Mazda rotary engines in their
DeLorean. The guy that did this used one of the old ones that doesn't
produce any more HP than the PRV, so there probably isn't any performance
gain. A rotary is a good choice for the D however because it has such a
high amount of power for its size. One of the rotaries for a 3rd
generation RX7 would cost a lot, but would probably work quite nicely.
Note that I've never seen one but it is small displacement and if it's
anything like the 1st generation one it will fit.
I've heard rumours (was it on the stainless steel frame page?) that the
stock frame has some limitations that make it unsafe to use with more than
about 200HP. Anyone know anything about this? It's also been discussed
on the list that the stock automatic transmission is unable to handle very
much HP, although the 5-speed is sturdier.
Someone also suggested the Eagle Premier PRV version as a good choice for
an engine swap. It produces 170+ HP in its stock configuration. I wonder
if Volvo's new 236-HP turbocharged 2.3L 5 cylinder might not fit, too. It
is not a large engine but seems (in the Volvo) to have a lot of plumbing
that could be a problem, and the turbo is bolted to the side and sticks
out. It may or may not fit but it is also a lot of power in a small
displacement.
Porsche's 6-cylinder "boxer" that they use in the boxter and new 911 is
another engine that "I think" might fit, although (presumably) very
expensive.
Other engines to consider if you're looking for more power than stock but
less than NASCAR would be modern 4-cylinder turbos. Don't laugh, they are
doing some phenomenal things with these even in stock engines. Look at
the Mitsubishi Eclipse, for example. They have a 2.0L 4 cylinder turbo
that produces 210 HP. On a car as (comparatively) light as the D you
ought to be able to get a 6 second 0-60 time with something that small and
powerful. Problems with size and weight associated with V8's are
eliminated with a killer micro engine like that, plus you get to keep some
fuel economy to boot. A rear differential change might be in order to
counter the lack of low end torque that these engines have, however.

a quick note on engines. the new 99 Lotus Esprit has a totally new 8 cyl.
engine that measures only 28 X 23 X 24 inches. it pounds out 350 hp and a
reported top speed of 178. it's a 3.5 liter 32 valve and weighs 485 lbs.,
btw. perhaps the DeLorean's lotus roots would make the engine worth
looking
into as a replacement. granted it will probably be expensive, but it
might
be worth a shot.

Since I have installed a V-8 in my DeLorean, I can tell you that it
makes the DeLorean into a Real Sports Car. It will challenge Z-28s,
mustangs, corvettes, porshe. I hope to have the performance specifics
0-60 etc.1/8 mile, calculated top speed. (I won't drive over 100 mph),
maximum 'g' force, etc. available next year.
The following rules must be followed when installing a V-8
1. Only use an aluminum V-8. The F/R weight ratio of the DeLorean
prohibits adding any more weight to the rear end. (Unless you like
driving only on the rear wheels!!!!)
2. Limit horsepower to around 280 with 300 ft lbs torque. In order to
used these maximums you will have to reinforce the rear frame.
3. Use as short a V-8 as possible. A Rover V-8 is the shortest I have
found.
4. Move the battery to the front bonnet. You need the weight up there.
5. Install a larger radiator and coolant pipes.
6. You must fabricate custom motor mounts with 4 engine suspension
locations to distribute the extra torque.
7. Install a 4 speed automatic with a 'bump stick' shifter for ease and
fun of driving.

I have a quick question about the mirror control switch. The mirror
switch on our car is completely dead. Since looking around under and
through other things on the car that don't work it seems that most of
the time its because the wires have come loose. I'm assuming this has
happened here as well.
I checked the archives and couldn't find anything specific about why
they usually don't work and was wondering if anybody had any
suggestions. Do I really have to take the doors apart.

Just thought you would be interested to know that the Wankel 12B two rotor
engine was one of the first power plants considered for the DeLorean. The
rumors you heard about the auto trans, and frame not being able to handle
a higher power engine are incorrect. Our failure rate records, going back
to 1982, indicate no increase in failure rates to either transmissions or
frames attached to engines modified for increased power. Finally, on the
subject of increased performance, we have only one suggestion; turbo
charge
the stock PRV.

I was reading over the DeLorean FAQ as provided by Mr. Grimsrud and came =

installed options booklet. It shows a picture of the black dealer =
stripes and also something called a "Grey Scotchcal thinline =
sidestripe". I've never seen this on any DeLorean that I know of. Does =

My DeLorean has a strange starting problem that is giving my mechanic
fits.
The car starts fine when it is cold and when it has just been run;
however, if
the car has been run and then sits for approximately 20 minutes, it won't
start.
The fuel pump and fuel filter are new. The car is maintaining 40 PSI in
the
fuel lines over night and 60 PSI when running, so it isn't the
accumulator.
The cold start valve is working and gets fuel. The fuel pump relay has
been
replaced, and the problem is still there. Also, when it is warm, the car
idles at 1500 RPM. When cold, it idles up and down around 800 RPM. It
takes
it about 5 minutes to warm up and idle at a consistent pace. After being
driven, it idles at 1500.
What could be the problem? My mechanic has talked to Rob Grady and
called the
Bosch hotline and still can't get it to run right, and he's worked on
DeLoreans before, so he isn't inexperienced. Any advice would be
appreciated.

Greetings fellow DMLers. First post for a long time lurker -- But now I =
have a question for the more technically oriented members of the list -- =
The problem: My brakes feel a little mushy - When sitting at a stop =
light I can feel the pedal gradually "sink". It doesn't bottom out and =
pumps to the top quickly when released and reapplyed once. Also no =
stopping problems on the road as yet. =20
It sounds like a master cylinder problem (diaphram bypass leak?) but, =
since I need to get into the system its probably a good idea to work on =
the entire system. My plan is to replace the master cylinder, add =
stainless steel lines (thanks Marty!) and new fluid. My questions:
1) How about going to silicone fluid to replace the DOT3/DOT4? Seems =
like a good idea to me, Any known downsides / experiences??
2) Assuming I buy a "new" master cylinder from DMC how reliable might =
it be given that the workings are basically 18 years old?? Am I better =
off with a rebuild? Or do any of the other retailers (PJ / DMC1????) =
sell a more effective unit?? How about cross reference or other =
specialty parts suppliers?? Again, I'm looking for your experiences and =
advice.
3) Finally, Any other performance improvement suggestions? Since I =
will basically have everything apart I would like to do it right the =
first time through.

Hi Mike,
well yes the prototype is an injection mold, and there will be resin
bodies
as well. The whole idea is that it should meet two requirements,
1. Be a reasonably good curbside model
2. Be RC controlled.
Once the Limited editions done we can start the RC production.

I have always like the gray stripe better than the big wide black one. I
bought one of these a few years back but have never put it on. My local
detail shop is hesitant to put it one because it is so old - I do not
know if they are still available anywhere...
I got mine from DeLorean One when Ed would still talk to me, it was
about $110, I recall.

read about a customizer who is attempting to fit a 289 cu. Ford engine

The wide black dealer stripe are no longer available.
The thin gray strip is possible still in stock and available from DeLorean
One.
I got mine from them 2 1/2 years ago and I have installed it on my
DeLorean.
It is nice when applied "correctly." It cuts the car in half and gives
it a
different look.
You would need a "keen eye" and patience to put them on.
You will also have to remove the mirrors to do a "correct" installation on
your DeLorean.
Otherwise is it an easy project.

Mine did this same thing you describe with the same symptoms. It turned
out to
be a bad fuel Distributer. Most of the time it would run but then would
suddenly cut off and not start again for a while.....Took us forever to
find
the problem, checked everything you did then found this...

As the owner of a supercharged Chevy powered DeLorean, I feel somewhat
obligated to respond to this latest thread. Digest $439 contained some of
my thoughts on this subject, but apparently not many of us got it due to
some glitch (if this were DOA, I'd have a theory on that - just kidding,
James). I have heard of Chev V-8's being installed, and even saw a photo
in
DeLorean World once, but when I did mine I opted for the shorter/lighter
4.3
V-6. With the blower drive I still had to make a small notch in the rear
closing panel, and it clears the rear frame crossmember by less than an
inch. Performance is incredible, handling superb (its lowered
considerably), it runs very cool, and I have been driving it almost daily
weather permitting for 3 years now.
Would I recommend others do this? No. First, I modified an abandoned,
vandalized hulk that cost me around $4,000. I would never have considered
doing this to a good car. But mostly, I hate to say it but I don't think
a
lot of those contemplating this task have a clue how to pull it off. Its
a
lot of work and requires a thorough knowledge of the mechanics of both the
DeLorean and the donor car, plus some engineering skills. As a hotrodder
for 35 years I had a pretty good idea what I was doing, and it still took
me
5 years (with some interruptions...). But if you are really
determined.....
Next time I will be looking very strongly at a Cad Northstar.

If the engine isn't cranking, and you have an automatic, it could be the
neutral safety switch. I had to bypass mine to eliminate my "warm start"
problem. Go figure..

My car idles at 1500, and I don't have any idle problems, so I doubt this
would be the case for you. 1500 is twice what it should be idling at, and
is most likely an ECU failure, but could be nothing more than a throttle
linkage problem. I have yet to diagnose mine.

Over the years we have had many requests for information on adjusting the
door torsion bars. The only printed information ever published by the
factory was written for factory trained workers and service personal and
contains minimal information. The only complete procedure was published 12
years ago and appeared in DeLorean World Magazine. Anyone who has read
these articles knows of the explicit warnings about window breakage,
shattered torsion bars, and personal safety. The warnings are accurate,
therefore I feel the only safe and accurate way to get this information
out
is by producing a "how to" video. Many of you know that I am also in the
broadcast video production business and I have been contemplating
producing
DeLorean service procedure video's for years. Based on the number of
requests coming in for the torsion bar adjustment procedure and the fact
that this is the only detailed way that I can show owners and service
personal how to do this procedure a video tape seems the best way to go.
After years of doing many torsion bar adjustments we have developed a
simpler and safer procedure using less tools. The "ball park" figure for a
limited run would be $75 to $125 per tape. I'll need to know how many of
you would be interested in making a purchase.

Mike,
First check fuse # 9, if the fuse is good remove the mirror control switch
and check to see if you have 12 volts at the green/white wire. The switch
can be pulled from the door by pulling up the interior door handle and
removing the black plastic trim piece called the escutcheon. See M:17:02
fig. 68 in your workshop manual for a diagram.

Your no hot start problem may be due to one of two items. You either have
a
defective time/temperature switch or a bad fuel accumulator. To test the
time temperature switch pull the connector off the cold start valve, if
the
car still refuses to start you will need to replace the fuel accumulator.

Sounds like your problem is related to your idle speed circuit. If the car
is idling at 1500 rpm when warm it means that the idle speed motor is wide
open, this causes an overly lean condition which will prevent the engine
from re starting. Have your DeLorean mechanic check all of the components
in the idle speed system. Also re check the cold start circuit. If the
cold
start valve is injecting with the engine warm it will create an overly
rich
condition. Once again your "D" mechanic should be able to check this
circuit.

Mike Griese is correct, the access panel is under the T-top, not above the
headliner. I've only done it that way once and it was several years ago,
so
I just took a shot at remembering, with a 50% chance of getting it right.
I
usually replace the door lock solenoids with actuators first, that frees
up
the black ground wire to use for the door opener actuators. This takes
longer and costs more, but is more reliable in my opinion. And you can
wire
it up without removing the T-top or headliner or whichever. No I don't
have
a kit; all I have is instructions and some sources. I almost wish I
hadn't
started this thread, because I wasn't prepared to respond to all those
interested. Please give me a couple of weeks to get organized so I can
provide info on-line, or send me a couple of bucks for copying/postage and
I'll mail it to you. Maybe after the first of the year I will consider
putting together a kit, depending on the demand. Part of the problem with
that is the variables - do you have an alarm system? Do you just want to
use a keyless entry? One door, or both? And what about liability - if
your
doors fly open at 88MPH, please don't have your attorney call me...

On page P:02:02 of the workshop manual, it details removal of the front
fender. Step 6 says:
Open the hood and loosen the Phillips head screws securing adjacent side
of the front fascia panel support bracket to the body angle bracket.
Can someone identify these screws for me?
All I need to do is move the right side of the front fascia forward about
an inch to gain access to the three screws that attach the front fender
to the body mounting bracket - ideas anyone?
