It was $250 million. At the time it was built it was the premier
automotive
paint facility in North America. It's still among the best. The Twin
Cities
plant currently produces 4400 Ranger trucks per week. Most of the painting
is done with robots and all the e-coating (the latest priming technique)
is
done in electrostatic dip tanks. Your right about DeLorean saving money by
not painting his cars. I was walking through a Home and Garden show once
and spotted a stainless steel riding lawn mower called the Zero Radius.
The
fellow in the display booth happed to be the company's owner. I explaned
my
interest because of the DeLorean and he told me a small company could do
stainless cheaper because of the expense of meeting environmental
regulations when painting. Much of Ford's expense was, and still is,
involved in keeping that paint plant in compliance with those regulations.
The amount DeLorean spent was quite small compaired to the larger auto
producers. There was as much British politics involved in pressuring the
company for investment returns as there was business savvy. You have to
remember that Northern Ireland was in the middle of this and there were
various political pressures that had little to do with business. Certainly
othe things factured into the company's demise, but I still think that

DeLorean accomplished something for which, unfortunatly, history probably
won't give him credit.

I have one too and it doesn't work either?
There is a switch on the left side of the engine CVR as you face the D'
from the rear.
My guess is dirty connection, dead bulb, broken switch, broken wire? If
you

Joe,
Check to see if the light bulb is good. Next check the switch located at
the
firewall located on the left side of the resistor upper corner. It is a
plunger switch, known to go bad.
After all of this, there should be light.
If there is not enough light you can always purchase another light unit
and
install it on the left side of the back wall opposite of the original
light
unit. I added this light unit as soon as I got the car some years ago.
Incidently, Rob from PJ Grady sugguest that the original bulb be removed
and a
lower wattage buld be replaced. The original bulb gets very hot and
melts the
lens on the housing assembly.
This way you can see the dipstick housing at night or poor lighting
conditions.

Hi every one,
The set of grey seat covers I dismounted from my D' are gone. They were
actually spoken for in about 6 hours, but I wanted to wait until the deal
was completed. The DML member that wanted them as confirmed delivery and
accepted their condition.
I just wanted to thank all of you who sent e-mail....WOW Seat covers must
be in big demand.
One comment, The new replacements came from our fearless leader James
about a Year ago, and are only just now getting mounted. The new Covers
are
really great, I think they are much better than the originals as far as
comfort. I think it is worth commenting that it took a while to find "Hog
ring pliers" required to mount the covers. After the first seat back I
switched to sewing the covers on using waxed carpet thread, curved needles
and pliers.( I did anchor the covers using a few hog rings)
I have no idea if 6-7 Hundred dollars is expensive for seat covers vs.
using an auto upholster shop and getting custom replacements. So I can't
comment on that aspect, but I can tell you it was challenging and fun to
mount the covers my self.. A great rainy day project if you like doing
your
own work.
One note: if you ever do decide to do your own covers remember to use
some
type of sealant on the washers that go under the nuts which hold the seats
in place, if you forget this you will have wet carpets every time you
drive
in the rain or drive threw water etc.

Subject: DML: Homecoming DeLorean
Great news,
Tonight I went to my homecoming dance. There was some special news
that I had heard just a few hours before the dance. A local photo
studio had a DeLorean for homecoming pictures. This was the same car
that I tried renting for homecoming. It was an 81 with black leather and
a 5 speed. I knew the owner of the photo shop and the owner of the D.
They told me they knew I would show up and gladly took my money for
pictures. I really didn't like the idea of them using the D for profit
but I guess that's the way of the world.
The photographer didn't know much about the car. He kept telling me
how good its low mileage made it. I laughed in his face and told him
that that low mileage meant nothing. I would rather have a D with 70k
than something that's been sitting in storage for 17 years. I was in
shock to see how the car was being treated too. Friends of mine were
just sitting right on the hood of the car and the photographer thought
nothing of it.
The car was in tough shape. The driver's seat and the windshield
were cracked. The stainless hadn't been taken care of either. They
obviously didn't know how to clean it properly.
I think the car may have been in a wreck. I am really not sure.
Most of the car looked neglected except for the dash. I could clearly
tell that the car had a new dash in it cause it was the only part that
looked like it had been taken care of. The front facias were painted
black. This is one of the first things that led me to believing the car
had been wrecked.
It was still cool to have homecoming pictures taken in front of a D
and I am glad that my GF was able to see what a D looks like. Now she
knows what type of car I will be driving when I grow up. I do feel that
this car was a bad example to be showing to people but it was good for
me to be able to see a neglected D and be able to compare it to the
others that have been cared for.

I CAN comment on a local upholstery shop. I had ONE rider's seat bottom
replaced (the driver's seat and the back of the riders were all in great
shape) and the cost of imitation grey leather installed was $180....so
$600 to $700 for the whole set ain't bad. I will say that the shop I
used did a great job and if they hadn't asked before hand, I doubt I
would have been able to tell that the bottom wasn't actually
leather...it was that good of a match! See ya.

I don't want to bad mouth Split Fire spark plugs, but...I have a fried who
builds Formula Ford racing engines. To be legal for SCCA and VARA, they
have
to be built within some very tight tolerances. Needless to say, he is
always
looking for legal ways to find an extra pony or two. So he ran a test on
his
Dyno, regular plugs verses Split Fire. His results were...no difference,
no
extra horse power gained with Split Fire plugs. Use a good brand of
platinium

I seemed to have lost the contact information for the DeLorean owners who
will be participating in the parade on the 5th of December in Palm
Springs. I'd like to participate if anyone can send me the information

Also, I'll be taking lots of photos of my car, #06232, for my personal
Christmas card and would like to share photos of my car to those
interested in them. I don't have a scanner so I'd like to send them to
someone who does and then have them posted on interested sites. All I ask

The generally accepted number of cars produced is 8583. It is entirely
possible that that number is higher, odds are we will never know for
sure.
As far as how many cars are left, an owner of one of the service
facilities estimates about 6,000. I was having this discussion with some
friends Saturday night, and we talked about how there are companies that
claim that they can tell you how many cars are left of any
particular make/model. They do this by counting registered vehicles.
However, many "collector" vehicles are not registered, sitting in a
garage or in storage.
So, our answer is unknown, but rest assured that it is FAR more than 16.

While the number of DeLoreans manufactured is common knowledge,
(8,583) the number still intact / operable is a much harder question to
answer. I have heard people suggest that 6,000 - 6,500 intact
DeLoreans are probably still in the U.S. (the DOA estimates 6,000). That
sounds plausible to me, although it would be very difficult to confirm
this
figure.
There are DEFINITELY more than 16! Between Ken Koncelik's Cincinnati
Car Show, the DOA's Los Angeles Expo, and a few car museums, I
have personally seen about 100 different DeLoreans this year. Last time
I tallied it, DeLorean Owners Directory registrants accounted for
somewhere between 500 and 600.

The most noticable differences are in the hood. The early '81s have two
creases in the hood and a fuel door. The late '81s have the creases, but
no fuel door. '82s and '83s have no creases or a fuel door, but they do
have a DeLorean emblem in the front driver's side corner of the hood. As
for my opinion on getting a DeLorean painted, I wouldn't if I were you.
Keeping the original stainless look will help the value of the car, and
painting it would defeat the whole purpose of having a stainless steel
body. It is also very difficult to remove the paint if you ever change
your mind. I think the stainless steel looks good enough, and it will
help people identify it as the "Back to the Future car" when they see it
:).

Hi,
I have searched all the web pages regarding this subject and
am still unsure as to EXACTLY how to adjust the torsion bars
and what tools (eg. wooden jig/spanners etc etc) I will need.....
(I have already replaced the Struts and still have the problem !!)
I would get the backissue of Delorean World but for me in the England
this will take a month or more....
(And I have already reached the end of my patience along with a poor
bruised head !!)
Can someone give me the difinitive way to adjust the bars without
injury to myself or the car ?

Along the lines of the thread on splitfire plugs, I recently saw a
advertisement for Bosch platinum plugs that use 4 electrodes. The
advertisement claimed all sorts of things...
Although I don't see how a spark plug designed this way can improve
initial performance or gas mileage, as many claim, but I do see how a
multi-electrode design can increase the life of the plug. Each
electrode has a 1 in 4 chance of taking the spark, so there will be less
wear on it. Of course, the center electrode is not so lucky!
Anyone try them yet?

Greetings to all of you fine people!
I was preparing my corporate business cards and while I was browsing

So if you are considering any inexpensive presentation cards (from 10.99

Anyone seriously interested in producing some sort of video feature on
John Z. DeLorean should watch the PBS special tonight and tomorrow
night (November 10 & 11) about Frank Lloyd Wright, by Ken Burns.
Frank Lloyd Wright is a famous yet highly controversial figure in
American architecture, much like John Z. DeLorean is in the field of
automobiles. At the same time, the legendary Ken Burns documentary
style can produce a high quality show on a limited budget.
According to http://www.pbs.org/ the show is on tonight at 9:00
everywhere in the U.S., but you should probably check local listings.
Tune in to PBS and watch it with an eye toward future discussions
about "DML Productions".

I do agree with this completely. I have SplitFires in my 'D and noticed

gain in power, but the advantage of the SplitFires, in my opinion, is the
longevity of these plugs. I've went 50,000 miles on these plugs and I

them checked at every oil change and they still don't need to be replaced.
I went ahead and replaced them anyway on my last oil change and, once
again,
did not notice any performance improvement but atleast I don't have to
worry
about changing them for awhile.

First of all, I'd like to thank everyone who replied to my question
regarding the fuel pump. We relayed the info to the museum operator (who
then would've informed the mechanic who services the DeLorean), so we're
basically just going to let them handle it.
Second of all, I'm reposting the following message because I don't think
it
went through properly:
The owner of the car is having the fuel pump replaced today by a mechanic
in
North Sydney. Apparently both the mechanic, the owner, and the museum
curator agreed that it was indeed the fuel pump that was causing the
starting problems.
Anyway, dad and I went to see the car today at the museum and to talk to
the
curator. Because the DeLorean is one of their most prized displays, the
curator tried his best to persuade us to let him keep the car in the
museum
if we did decide to buy it (fat chance of that happening). We spent about
1/2 an hour there looking over the car and here's some of the things that
might need fixing:
#1. The centre headliner is sagging, and both door headliners look pretty
grotty, so they would need to be replaced.
#2. The driver's-side door is droopy, and the passanger's-side door strut
is
a little weak, so both door struts will need replacing.
#3. The centre consol switches were loose
#4. Interior carpets are in dire need of a good cleaning.
#5. There is a scrape along the left side of the front facia
#6. Cargo net is missing
These problems are no big deal, but I think the first things that would
need
replacing are the door struts.
Car information:
Build date - December 1981
Vin - 10599
RHD (unsure if it's stock RHD, or if it has been converted)
Grey interior
Manual Transmission
Straight hood (no lines or fuel flap)
Rear power antenna
Non-stock stereo (not sure of the brand, but seems to be from around the
mid
80's)
Car alarm installed
Overall, it's a pretty nice car despite the minor repairs needed. We might
be going back to see it next weekend to see what the deal is with the fuel
pump and if they managed to get it running.
Also, is there any way of finding out by the VIN if they car is a factory
right-hand drive? I remember someone saying the John Truscott could find
out
the history of individual cars by looking up their VINs. Is this right?
On another note. While we were looking at the car, a surpising number of
people gathered around it to take a look. The displays are usually fenced
off, but because the curator was showing us around the car he un-hooked
the
plastic chain barrier, and I guess everyone took the opportunity to look
around the engine compartment and under the gullwings. It was pretty
funny,
because dad was commenting on what a head-turner the DeLorean Sports Car
is
when about six or seven people started hovering about it. When we left,
there were still groups of people looking at it, leaving every other car
on
display looking rather lonely :)

PJ Grady sells rebuilt ones. They are all re-plated in cadmium, rewound
with
heavier gage and much higher temperature wire, and the grounds are all
soldered. In other words are more reliable and less prone to burn-up.

Well, I guess I've finally joined up with the owners on this list. For
about a year I have been lurking and listening, and finally I bought one
of these beautiful cars. It is an '81 with a black interior and a
5spd. It is in running condition, but will need some engine work to
pass a smog. It also needs lots of small cosmetic things, and some not
so cosmetic things (door struts). Has anyone been able to buy door
struts from their local auto parts store? If not, I think I'll order
the whole set from PJ Grady. So far, I have run into the usual problems
(windows, door locks, vent system), and I plan to restore this car over
the next few years. I think the first thing that I am looking for on
this list is a shop manual. I don't know where these are available. Or
are they? If anyone knows where and how much please let me know.

Engine swaps have been discussed before. Even though I have heard of
kits that will allow some V8 engines to fit in the D (I think a Chevy
small block), The additional weight will change the balance of the car,
and in turn hurt the performance unless you re-engineer the suspension.
If you are going to do a motor swap, I would recommend looking at
modified PRV-6 motors. This would be a easier task in Europe than the
USA because this is a more common motor in Europe.
There have also been cars with the Buick 3.8 Turbo motor (Grand
National) installed, getting 300+ HP from a 6 cylinder motor.
There are pictures (somewhere) of a Supercharged Chevy motor in a D,
don't remember the details of this one.
And, of course, there is the BTTF delorean that was in Ohio this summer,
that has a 8 Cylinder motor from a Range Rover (I think) bolted to a
Porche 4 speed automatic. In Ohio, the transmission was not working but
I don't think this had anything to do with the motor installation.
There were pictures/specs of this car somewhere on the web.
Most if not all of the owners of the above cars are on the DML, so they
may respond with more detail.
Another possibility would be a Taurus SHO motor (3.0L DOHC 6 Cyl). A
race modified SHO motor will also easily exceed 300HP. I think you can
get 300HP from a SHO without forced induction (turbo/supercharged). I
know of no one who has tried this one, but it would be interesting!
IMHO You will be looking at big bux ($10,000+) to do it properly.
Please keep us up to date on the details of your project.
