Eric,
Being you have SSI the answer to some of your questions are in hand. The
answer to # 2 is the fact that aluminum becomes dulls, oxidizes, and is
easily stained. Pages 97 & 98 will give you the reasons. The answer to
question # 4 is on page 50. As further proof slide under your DeLorean and
look at the distance between the back of the trans and the frame, keep in
mind some access space had to be left to get to the shift linkage
therefore
the setup is placed as far forward as possible.
The answer to question # 4 is that the only modification to the suspension
was increasing the spring height 1 1/2 inches. Returning the front height
to design specs is easily accomplished by purchasing a set of
re-calibrated
springs from DMC Houston. The dynamics of the car were very accurately
designed by Lotus, any size wheel other than the original will result in
negative results. Question # 6, removing the body from the chassis isn't
complicated it's all the cooling, fuel, and electrical connections that
are
very labor intensive. Finally question # 8 is a mystery, we have no
documents indicating when the gas flap officially went away. Because many
cars were re-assembled at the QAC's hoods with flaps found their way into
cars that left the factory well after the hood flaps were discontinued.

Hello,
Hope you can help. In-Between working on the cooling system with a lot
of assistance from DMC Joe, I have been puttering around with the tail
lights. The left side has a bulb or two that seem to work only when
they want to. Since my wife and I are new DeLorean owner's " yes she
loves the car too" and we are fortunate enough to live very close to
James Espey. He was willing to come by and go over our D. Thanks again
James.
He mentioned the technique of putting small screws into the rivet holes
of the circuit board to tighten it down. However either I didn't do a
good enough job or there's a really bad connection in there. It looks
like the previous owner took a soldering gun to it without much luck.
Can I purchase another board or do I need to buy a complete light set or
is there something else that can be done.
Also, in trying to clean the boards I sprayed some electrical cleaner on
them and dripped some on the rear bumper. By the time I noticed it it
had eaten away the paint. Not bad but I would like to touch it up.
Does anyone know if I can buy a certain brand of spray paint at an auto
store. Looks like black semi gloss to me.

You will find a complete wiring diagram plus individual diagrams for
various sections of the car in section "M" of the DeLorean Workshop
Manual.
Be aware that there were many changes made from the start of production
and
no updates were ever published. The fact that your car is an 82 means
"lots
of changes". We have documented virtually all of the changes, if you have

Sorry to hear about your mishap. I haven't been encouraged by Don Massey
either...for bodywork or service. You may want to give Pfeiffer
Lincoln-Mercury a call. They are located in Grand Rapids and once was one

the largest Delorean dealers. Pfeiffer purchased much of the excess
Delorean
inventory when things started to tumble down for the company...I still
have
a
newspaper clipping showing more than 100 cars on his lot along with a
advertisement selling new Deloreans for $20,000!
Anyway, give them a call, I know owners on that side of the state still
use
him for service.

SSI is just plain wrong. The VIN#500 car *has* a fuel flap, as does my
VIN#1280 and many of the early cars. You can find some good
speculation and discussion on this in the DML back issues. The popular
theory is that DMC did away with the filler flap because it weakened the
luggage compartment lid, allowing it to warp in the corner. It may have
also been a cost saving measure.
The later cars were made without filler flaps, although I'll bet a few
early
and late DeLoreans have been refitted with each other's hoods.

Hello list...
I am a (thrilled) new DMC owner and new to the list. This is my first
post.
The lights behind the heat/ac controls in my D stay on all the time and
are
not controlled by the dash light dimmer knob. Is this normal?
Also, the "Cooling fan fail" light blinks on and off occasionally when the
AC is on, but my the car never gives any signs of overheating, even in
traffic. Should I worry about this or just ignore it?
I'm sure this information is around somewhere, and common knowledge, but I
haven't found it anywhere yet. Thanks for your help!

This is the MetPay program for business group rates. If you are lucky
enough
to have MetPay offered through your employer, the rates are about half
what
you'd pay with MetLife's "regular" coverage. I was quoted about $50/mo.
with MetPay, and about $100/mo. with MetLife.
Allstate is still the cheapest "Regular" insurance I've found at $88/mo.
Drive safe! Maybe our rates will go down.

Years ago when I was trying to find out about DMC stock kits, I called
Ertl
and spoke with a rep. He told me the they had planned on releasing a stock
Delorean but then DMC went under and the plans by Ertl were dropped. I
asked him about releasing a BTTF model and they had some interest in it
and
were contacting the Japanese manufacturer. As we all know Ertl did
finally release a BTTF version.
I have taken the Ertl version and modified it to be a stock DMC. It looks
pretty good if I do say so myself. For those of you who have these kits
you
know the doors are not able to open...WELL....... I actually took the time
to cut them open and I have a cool looking stock Delorean model with the
door up! I also did one up as the BTTF car. (doors down!)
Anyway, I have Ertl BTTF kits for sale if you are interested.

All this talk of body damage lately (and the recent $50 million hailstorm
here in Denver - the city with the absolute most hail in the USA) has made
me curious as to what can be done about minor dings and dents such as hail
damage and parking lot rash. Can a regular "paintless dent repair" (heh)

on account of the stainless?

Well I've been asking for some time for pictures of the show or a
DeLorean to
put on the upcoming YEAR 2000 home page and we have a winner.
I chose a picture of the DeLoreans lined up by the museum taken by Ken
Montgomery as the winning photo. (Your $25 will be mailed in November)
There were a number of good ones and I think I'll use them on some of the
other pages.
I am changing web sites to cut costs.
The old web page is still active and I will be working on the new one this
month.
The new web page will feature links on the main page for Delorean events
for
anyone wishing to list them so just let me or Richard know and we'll add
them.
We aren't going to get into articles or message boards, the DML and
DeLorean
publications do a good job of that already.
We are always interested in pictures.

The Cleveland show is progressing well and from the feedback from all of

I have recently purchased a Delorean from Sweden
(They drive on the right !!) for use in England
(We drive on the left).
I have got the car through the English road test
but at the expense of having black sticky tape placed
on the headlights to ensure they don't blind oncoming
traffic.
Does anyone know what type of headlights will be English
compliant and fit the Delorean ?

Yes, this is normal. If it bothers you, there is a simple fix involving a
resistor and two spade connectors. Remove a relay, replace it with a
resistor, and your A/C panel light will be controlled with the headlight
switch. Details can be found in the back issues of the DML and
DeLorean World.

Your car probably has the original fan control module. I suggest you
replace it with the fan bypass or a Fanzilla (your choice). You can
construct the bypass yourself for less than $10 in parts. Again, I
believe
details are in the DML back issues and the DW back issues.
Both of these "problems" are absolutely normal. They reflect the peculiar
way the DeLorean wiring was designed. You might want to check the
function of your fuel gauge, brake lights, passenger side door safety
lights, and your voltage reading at idle while you are at it.

rack.(I can't recall exactly why, something about too much verticle free
play on the pass side.) Anyways I removed it - not too hard really! and I
was wondering if this is something an averae person can rebuild, or do I
need to send it to one of the DeLorean places?

It's confused. It will produce a quote for an '82 however. I don't
assume there would be much difference. It quoted me $1250. Now, does
that require that my company be a MetPay member? Can regular people use
this quote feature too? (I think my company IS a MetPay member, as a
matter of fact, but I'm not sure...)

While you can probably install a rebuilt steering rack in your garage, I
would not mess around with trying to rebuild it yourself. A damaged or
improperly rebuilt steering rack is a SERIOUS safety hazard. It is worth
a
few hundred bucks to get a properly remanufactured rack. Check with
any DeLorean parts source you like for availability . . . I got mine from
Dave Bauerle and I am very happy with the improvement in my steering.

Very often, I don't drive my DeLorean for a month at a time. Because of
this,
my old battery would always be dead. Practically every time I wanted to
take
the car out for a spin, I would have to recharge the battery. It got to
be a
pain.
I told Rob Grady about this and he installed his top-of-the-line battery.
It
worked great for about 3 months... and then it started to die as well.

Not that this is a fix, but maybe you should install a power cutoff on the
battery. This way, when you are done with the car for any extended length
of time, you can disconnect the power from the rest of the car and the
next
time you want to use it, reconnect the power and the car should fire right
up. I have one installed on mine. By simply turning the knob (of the
cut-off) a couple of turns, the power is disconnected.

Can't help you with the products, but here's 2cents about trickle
charging for
you to contemplate.
Remove the battery from the car if you trickle charge it for long periods
of
time. A bimetallic problem will cause the iron cylinder sleeves and the
aluminum block to eat each other and that will eventually destroy the
engine.
No kidding, I've seen it with my own two eyes and it is ugly. So if you
have
a 'D' that sits for long periods between use, please, remove the battery
and
trickle charge it disconnected from the car. Once it goes, you can't
save the
block. I don't know how much Steve Wynn gets for one of his crate
engines.
If you want a more technical explanation, please ask one of the suppliers.

Why don't you get a Battery Tender? They're between $40-$50 and they'll =
maintain a charge on your battery forever. Not a tricle charger, a =
battery maintainer. Thay're available in almost every car magazine. I =

Yes it is. I did get a quote for an '82 that was just over $500 per year.
I guess it does pay to be "old" and, presumably, conservative. Wonder if

I installed one of those "Solar Cell" chargers on my Motor Home several
years ago, my battery still went flat. Also, the Solar charger requires
that you store the car outside. Mine is garaged. I bought a battery
maintainer, 2 Amp trickle charger. This charger mounts in the engine
compartment and completly shuts off when the battery is topped off. I
bought it at Wall-Mart for $20. After hearing about the electrlitic
corrosion that occurs between the iron cylinder liners and the aluminum
block, I decided to ground the charger directly to the battery. I'm
hoping that this will disconnect the engine from the charging circuit.
Any EE's out there that can help with my theory?

You don't need new headlights at all; just adjust your headlights so
that they're shining at the right angle towards other cars. In America
headlights point towards the right of the road so in England as in
Ireland, they point to the left so as not to blind on coming traffic!

Float Charger that is sold by Harbor Freight Tools. It will keep your
battery fully charged but not overcharged. The price is $9.99. Do they
work?--you bet! I have three of them. One for my Delorean, Triumph and

Yes, this is how the cars were set up from the factory. Many of us have
changed it.
There is a modification to make the heat/AC control lights not stay on
on the time, and work off the same curcuit as the dashboard lights..

DONT IGNORE IT!
If the Fan Fail light is comming on, it is likley that you have a car
where the fan curciut modification has not been done, and you should do
it ASAP. You can get details on this in the back issues, or from the
Service Buletins. The modification bypasses and disables the "Fan Fail"
light, so it becomes disabled. The more modern fix would be to install
a Fanzilla (http://www.pjgrady.com/cooling.htm), and I am told that this
will retain the proper operation of the "Fan Fail" light.
