Subject: DML: DeLorean Items for sale
I have a few DeLorean Items I am getting rid of and thought there might =
be an interest.
=20
One large framed poster 40"x 58" showing a DeLorean breaking through =
several magazines. Caption at the top reads, "Presenting America's most =
talked about car". It was mounted on plywood and has a plexiglass front =
(probably weighs about 20-30 pounds). Some of it has rubbed on the =
plastic and a couple small areas have stuck to the plastic so I do not =
want to take it out and reframe it. The previous owner had it in his =
garage and it has a couple small spots at the bottom. Overall it is in =
reasonable shape and currently hangs inside my house.
=20
Books, "Dream Maker, the Rise and Fall of John Z. DeLorean", by Ivan =
Fallon & James Srodes. Library copy in good condition.
=20
"DeLorean", by John Z. Delorean, HC good condition but the jacket has =
some small tears and wear.
=20
One small metal DeLorean car made in Hong Kong #P374. It is about 2" =
long, silver, white interior, doors open. It has some paint rubbed off =
the car and bumpers but is in reasonable shape. I paid $20 for it in =
this shape about 3 years ago.
=20
One video of all the DeLorean ads and some shots of the factory and =
building and testing. I think this also was about $20 or $25.
=20
Two framed items (8x10) one shows a very nice photo of a DeLorean from =
the front with the doors open, I think there was more on the back but =
would have to take it out of the frame.
=20
The other has all the specifications of the car and again I think there =
is a photo or more on the back but can't remember.
=20
I also have several old DeLorean World magazines. Most all through =
about 1995 I think. Most are photocopies but there are several =
originals also as I was a member of the DMC club for a few years (I had =
3 DeLoreans over about a 6 year period). This stack of magazines is =
about 8" tall and all wrapped in plastic and I will not open them to =
look through what is and is not there. I don't have the time.
=20
I also have some NOS parts as follows:

I can send jpeg photos of anything.
=20
I would like to sell everything for one money, but am also willing to =
seperate items, so feel free to make an offer. I will be taking offers =
until August 18th and then deciding.
=20
I will be away from August 9th until August 13th and can answer =
questions or send pics after that. =20
=20
I am doing all this to just clean things out as I don't expect to get =
another DeLorean for some time.

This trailing arm stuff can't be over looked, as I'm sure us long term
owners can attest. Not long after aquiring my D (1984) during a leisurly
Sunday drive near downtown Detriot on Jefferson Ave.(big main street)
one of these large arm bolts decieded to sheer in half. Well, thank God
I was not on the freeway. It could have been all over! The rear wheel
went up into the top of the wheel well and that side was very near
street level. The original bolts do not have the tensile strength needed
and are extremely DANGEROUS. They must be replaced with stronger
aftermarket ones.

Since the plunger travel is dependant on the door fit and latch
adjustment, I doubt
if any "standard" measurements would apply. Manually push in the
plunger until
the lights just go out, push in a little more (to ensure an air gap in the
electrical contacts of the switch), and mark where the notch should be.
On close examination, it appears that notch (which is less than 1/16"
deep) was cut
with a couple of swipes of a triangular file. The edge of the notch
(toward the
car) is perpendicular to the plunger (to create a 'flat' to catch the
metal trim
piece) and the angled portion is toward the outside end. If the notch is
cut so
that the plunger is held too far in, the door will not contact it and you
will
loose the auto-center/return-to-normal-operation feature, but a sideways
tap on the
plunger will put things back.
Seems like too simple a concept to require more.
Or, look me up at Expo98 and I'll show them to you

My friends DeLorean has had a constant overheating problem. The
radiator is the large brass one and the system has been properly bleed.
Does anyone on the list have the ground effects package on there
DeLorean, I'm wondering if this may be the cause of the overheating?
Any thoughts you guys have would be appreciated.

Hello,
I came across this list about a week ago and thought it could provide
an answer to a problem that's been bothering me for some time. I was
recently
on a website that featured Deloreans for sale. Each car had a brief
description by its owner. Many of these cars had references to a "Factory
turbo installed" or "twin turbos". Is this correct? I was unaware that
Deloreans ever came with a turbo option. Is this a joke? If not, are the
units still available for retrofitting, and how much of a horsepower
increase
do they produce? Anybody, please set me straight on this topic as I have
been
unable to get any answers around here. I can be reached at

Make that three - mine came with that little feature as well - a free
pair of tiny vise-grips. (About the only good deal on my car, by the
way.) I replaced the cable with one from a bike store commonly used for
the hand brakes. You'll have to fabricate something to hook the cable to
the handle, I just used some tiny cable clamps. While your at it install
a second one, ouside of the cable jacket, and tie it to something under
the dash for when the main one breaks again.
BTW - if the release cable for the engine cover breaks you need only to
remove the left-hand tail light to reach in activate the lid release.
The relay board is behind the passenger seat, just lift up the carpet and
then the piece of plywood. If you've haven't been in there yet you're
probably in for a lot more work than just installing FanZilla. Clean up
all the relays and fuses, and if any of the relays say "Lucas" you should
throw them about as far as you can (after you get new ones). By the way -
FanZilla should have come with very detailed instructions. If it didn't
call Rob Grady.

Caution - Rant Alert - I don't do this much so I thought I'd warn you-all.
With all the discussion about bargain fixer-uppers I figured I'd toss my
thoughts in as well. I have had my '81 for about a year and a half.
Although not concours, it is generally considered to be in pretty good
shape. Even at that, I have spent over $4k in making it reliable, i.e.
non-cosmetic fixes (fuel system, brakes, electrics - all the stuff you
read about on the list). Add another $2K in cosmetics (facias, binnacle,
tires, etc.). (List available on request.)
I would never have believed that it would add up to this much, and the
amazing thing when I look back through my records is that it is all in
parts costing $100 here, $200 there (i.e. the 90's version of nickel and
dime!). I have never paid any labor to anyone, it was all work done by
me. And I have yet to touch the engine or transmission. I can't imagine
what it would have cost if I had paid someone to do this work (although
I'll bet "Hawkeye" McGauley can-inside joke). The idea of fixing up a
$5000 car for another couple thousand is not realistic unless the person
selling the car is truly desperate or just dumb. Or your definition of
fixed-up is way different from mine.
Don't get me wrong, I'm still nuts about the car and went into it as a
hobby planning to work on it. It's been a great learning experience and
I'm happy to share the knowledge. I really get a kick at shows when
people look at mine and think it's worth $50k.
I just hate to see people buy an $8000 example with their last dime,
intending to drive it everyday as their primary car, and then get mad
when they can't possibly keep the car on the road, so another one falls
by the wayside (jeez I'm starting to sound like you-know-who). An $8000
Delorean is NOT the same as an $8000 Honda. It's more like an $8000
Corvette or Porsche. As is true with most all collector cars, you can
rarely restore a run-down car for less than the price of an
already-restored or original-but-clean one by the time you are done. I'll
feel safe in stating that you can NEVER pay someone to restore a car for
less than buying a good one to start.
Knowing what I know now, I'd suggest that a purchaser look for one that
has been driven regularly (but not in bad weather) rather than one that
has been stored, from an owner that admits to recently keeping up with
the common repairs and maintenance. Buy the best one that you can find,
and take someone who has owned and/or worked on one with you when you go
looking. And no matter how good it looks, leave some money in the bank
for the future.
I feel better now. James - maybe this can be your editorial article. . . .

G'day Brad.
I live in Richmond, NSW and also love DeLoreans. In the past few months,
I've noticed that DeLoreans are becoming less and less rare here. There
are
at least two DeLoreans I know of that are for sale in Australia. If you
check out the August issue of "Unique Cars" at your local Newsagency,
you'll
see them among the pages. One is a whopping $90,000AUS (w/ 2000 miles on
it,
and is in WA), and the other is a cheaper $50,000AUS (ex-museum car from
SA). Both are LHD, and the second one has been advertised for the past
three
months.
Also, if you live in Sydney, I suggest checking out the Automotive Museum
near Darling Harbour. They have a nice '81 DeLorean among their
collection.
It's actually privately owned (and the curator informs me that the owner
was
looking to sell it - for a hefty price, though), and is a factory Right
Hand
Drive.
As for prices in the USA, I'm no expert but I think you can pick up a
reasonably good DeLorean from between $10,000US to $30,000. But with the
exchange rate the way it is, you'll probably end up paying a fortune.

As others will tell you, no DMC ever came with a turbo. Buyers had them
installed by the dealer or others. Usually only ran about 5.5 lbs. of
boost
and always seemed to cause leaks and troubles. DMC was doing a lot of
research at the end and actually got one engine set up with a turbo, but
they had to do A LOT of changes to parts before it all worked. It was
done
by Legend Industries and was a twin turbo and R&T compared the
acceleration
to a Porsche 930 turbo. It never went into production but this one car
still exists. There is a good story about it on page 110 of DeLorean
Stainless Steel Illusion by John Lamm (isbn 0-930880-09-9) now out of
print.
You might find a copy at your library though.

Same problem! This is the oil pressure switch which turns on the oil
idiot
light. When I removed the nut and the wire, I noticed that there was a
second
nut and that the center element was loose. I tightened the lower nut
which
tightened the element, put the wire and the top nut back on and the
switch works
normally with no oil leak.

Hi all
I've been researching DeLoreans for quite some time and I am planning to
buy
one when the fund become available. One question that I have though,
concerns the actual company itself. The DeLorean seems to have been a
very
popular car and probably would have become quite reliable had it been
given
the time to evolve. Why didn't any other business-type people try to
restart the company? I've heard that the stamping dies for the parts had
been destroyed, but if there are still engineering drawings of the parts,
then new dies (and cars) could be produced. Just curious...

There were no factory installed turbo's for the DeLorean. They did,

the better choices is the Island Turbo from Turbo Manifold Co. in Natick

Scott,
We have a couple of clients that have ground effects with no problems. If
you could find out more details of the overheating problem we can give you
answers.
99% of overheating in DeLoreans is caused by the following: trapped air,
low coolant level, defective cooling electric's, thermostat, or a leaky
head gasket.

Ken,
Discard the disc if the thickness is less than 11.7. I don't recommend
that
the rotors be turned unless you have severe scoring (groves). Other than
that the only time we recommend turning is if there is steering wheel
shimmy when the brakes are applied.

I have investigate this many times..
Although most policies allow occasional "Sunday Driver" use, all of the
insurance companies I have spoken to specificaly state that the car can
not be parked anywhere other than your garage, or a car show where you
will be with the car.
Yes, you can drive the car to the mall, and park it without any
complaints from your insurance company...... Until it is stolen!
I always get a kick out of this conversation at the car shows, where
someone tells me how they have had the special insurance for years, and
never had a problem with parking the car at the mall... When I ask have
they ever made a claim, the answer is always NO! The bottom line is,
your insurance company will let you do whattever you want with your car,
until you make a claim. Then LOOK OUT!

Subject: DML: Gulf Port Meeting, SUCCESS!
Dear Friends,
Yesterday, Aug. 9th, I had the opportunity to meet up with some
friends in Gulf Port, MS. Bill, Duke, and Scott drove out from Alabama
and Greg Guillot and myself drove out from Louisiana. We were also
joined by someone who lived out in Biloxi. Steven was so exited to see
a D for the first time. I forgot to mention that Scott and Duke each
brought one of their kids with them. It was fun to see some young
people who will own a D someday.
We arrived around noon and stayed in the parking lot for a few
minutes before we went inside to have our lunch. Once we were inside we
had to wait in a long line but we didn't mind since we were all talking
about D's anyway. After we finished our lunch we gathered around a
small table to look at pictures from Cincinnati and to look at pictures
of Greg's "Project Car". Scott also had some pictures of his son in his
Power Wheels version of the BTTF car.
It is always fun to meet new owners and new enthusiasts. I
encourage everyone to search for people in your area and to try
arranging a lunch with them. You can't have a better lunch than being
surrounded by friends who love their D's.

Subject: Re: DML: turbos
The "Factory Twin Turbo" was never produced. DMC had a contract with
Legend Industries to build the Twin Turbo setup for the PRV6 Delorean.
When everything fell apart, there were a few prototype "Legend" cars
that survived. I was under the assumption that all of the "Legend" car
whereabouts were knows.
There are a number of turbo and twin turbo after market kits available
for the Delorean. You can read about them in detail by searching the
back issues.
If you look at the car, it should be easy to see if it is a legend, or
after market turbo. The after market unit(s) usually have the 180deg
"U" pipe removed from the intake plenum, and all of the turbo plumbing
hooked up there. The Legend turbo has the turbos more towards the fire
wall, and there is a manifold which replaced the stock air box. The
180deg U pipes should be in place. (This is how it was on the Legend
car I saw...)
Either way, I would be suspicious of someone trying to sell a DMC as
"Factory installed turbos" because if it WERE a "Legend" car, they would
say so! Most likely, it is a after market turbo kit.

Bob,
Can I ask how much you got charged by Customs and Exise when you brought
the DeLorean into GB. My '81 will leave Baltimore headed for Liverpool
in October and I want to know what to expect. Do you have any contacts
at the C&E dept. where I can enquire about my case?
Have you registered the car yet? If so how much has it cost you. I'm
living here in Hong Kong and relying on my Dad in N.Ireland to sort this
for me, so I'm trying to tie up as many of the loose ends as possible!
You should contact the Brit. DMC Owners. They have a pretty good web
page and seem quite active.
Cheers, IAN

in 1 and 1/2 yrs I have replaced the speedometer, all the cables, the l
drive and just cover. Had the car aligned, new tires balanced on the
car.
Presently the 3rd L-drive has failed. Can not understand how to solve
the
problem. Need help. Also, have had the bearings checked and new shocks.
Only problem I have been able to determine myself is that the cable from
the L-drive does put some pressure on the plastic dust cover. Made a hole
in the dust cover to reduce the pressure and possibly not bind the
spinning
of the cable. However, that has not solved the problem, since the 3
L-drive also failed. Would appreciate any thoughts.

I fixed my speedometer/odometer without buying any parts.
The plastic "dust cover" is not a dust cover...and making a hole in it to
allow the cable to spin is the exact opposite of what you need to
do. This circular (2" diameter) part is right in front of you when you
remove the left front tire. It's job is to hang on to the speedo cable
and turn it as the wheel turns. Remove it, and you'll see the end of
the speedo cable.
Turn the cable by hand to see if the speedo needle jumps around.
If it does, you don't need to buy any parts!
My cable is a little warped so the plastic cover needed some
reinforcement.
I inserted a thin metal strip into the hole where the cable goes.
Now the odometer/speedo works perfectly.

Are you sure this is how the plastic cover was damaged? Usually the
edges "Round Out" on the plastic cap because there is something binding
it up... The angle drive is most common.

Hi Rodger,
I am the self proclaimed Champion of DeLorean Angle Drive wipe outs
("L-drive) which is correctly known as "Speedo RH Angle Dr Part number
106130"
First you should understand that this unit is very weak and not a good
design. It requires in some D's regular preventive maintenance. This is
also true for the lower speedo cable.
The thing you drilled out and call a dust cap is in fact the speedo drive
cap. If the drive cable from the RH dangle drive is to long then
something
is not installed right. The angle drives are usually pre greased and
tested
before being sold by most if not all the DMC suppliers. You must be sure
that the unit is ready to install and you need to check that the retaining
ring is installed correctly, and that the speedo cable is correctly
installed and tightened. The drive cap needs to be greased and installed
correctly to ensure that the Right angle unit drive cable (square at end)
is seated and that the lower cable turns free and with out any resistance.
The whole speedo assembly should be free enough that you can spin the tire
and the speedometer show a reading.
The lower speedo cable must be washed out and lube with white lithium
grease when new and first installed and re greased every few thousand
miles.
I just replaced my 5th RH angle drive two days ago...It just seized up and
twisted apart.
