Cool thread, Walt!

I'd seen DeLoreans around town. Very rarely - I think I can count 3
sightings since I started paying attention over 15 years ago.

Mine was the first I sat in - or touched, for that matter. I had an up
close encounter with one in a parking lot about 6 months before I
bought mine. A buddy and I went over to check it out. He put his
grubby hands all over it, and I had to tell him what an ass he was for
doing so. I just don't think it's right to be touching someone else's
car without their permission and since the owner wasn't there, I
didn't touch.

When I bought mine it was sight unseen. I'd looked at pictures and
talked to the owner but the car was in Sacramento. I agreed to buy it
barring any unforeseen problems and flew down a couple of days later.
I figured there was a very slim possibility I wouldn't like driving
one, but I got the car for quite a bit less than it's value due to the
owner going through a bankruptcy and needing to move it fast. I
figured I could resell it and make a small profit, worst case.

Sitting in one for the first time was really, really cool. Driving
away was even better. I, too, had always thought they were a rich
person's toy. Only figured out about 2 years ago that I could afford
one.

The best part was sharing it with others. I told NOBODY I was buying
this car, except my wife. Didn't have time, really, as I bought the
car on a Wednesday afternoon and my flight left that Friday at 5:00am.
So I was determined to have some fun. I arrived home Saturday around
7:00am having slept only 6 hours out of the past 48 (3 hours Thursday
night and 3 more on the drive home). I put the car right into the
garage so nobody could see it and then slept for the next 8 hours.

Saturday afternoon I queued up the Back to the Future theme song and
set my automation system to play it over the garage speakers any time
the (interior - people sized) garage door was opened, then invited
people over one at a time. Watching friends walk out into the garage
with a DeLorean sitting there and the music suddenly coming on was
more fun than I've had in a long time.

I've had two really neat Back to the Future moments. Before I flew
down I'd looked up other owners and found Brian (he posts here
occasionally - TK-581) in Sacramento. He agreed to spend some time
with me and show me around the car. Amazingly he lived only a couple
of miles from the previous owner! Anyway, when I was leaving I was
standing by the driver's opened door, resting my arm on it, and he
said something to the effect of "Keep in touch". All I could think
was, "Indeed I will." I felt like Doc leaving on his first time travel
trip. (Yes, I'm a dork. You can all laugh at me now.)

Second moment was last weekend. I was working on a piece of furniture
in my garage and had to leave the DeLorean outside overnight while the
poly dried. I came out and the car had frost & ice all over it. Looked
like it'd just returned from a trip through time.

I've had it 6 months now and still feel like a kid in a candy store
every time I drive it.
