Do you have an electrical connector on top? The cap is designed to have a float type switch mounted in the master cylinder with the electrical connector on the outside. I'm just wondering if yours is missing and that is where the slit is from? Or is it a slit in the cap off to one side of the connector? Either way I'd check around for a new cap.
