(Sorry for the off topic stuff, but for once I can help out!)
Hey Martin,
Perhaps I can help out- from the description you gave of your hard
drives, you have a Ultra2-SCSI (I call it SCSI-2) drive- 1 connector
running both power and data. Great for hot-swap backplanes. SCSI-3
(UltraWide, LVD, blah blah blah..) has seperate connectors for power and
data, where SCSI-1 looked like a fat IDE connector. For a reference,
look up an IBM Ultrastar model # DDYS-T18350 and check out it's plugs-
that should be what your Adaptec wants to plug into. Adaptors do exist
for those SCSI-2 plugs (UltraWide3/LVD with separate power and data
plugs TO that single SCSI-2 connector on the HD)- several of my
customers have such setups in their older servers.
In regards to other hard drive connectors, there is also Serial ATA.
That plug looks kind've like a small USB plug except everything is
plastic. All other types of connectors/interfaces would be considered a
history lesson.
Flavia- I would guess 2 possiblities to explain the Gateway's lack of
imagination when it comes to large hard drives- 1) the computer can't do
the math to see 80 gigs or 2) the hard drive controller is too fast
(ATA-66, ATA 100, etc..) for the gateway. I would be on reason #1 first.
Also, keep your eye on that 12gig Quantum drive- I see a lot of those
drives of that era crap out in an instant due to a chip failure on the
controller (it's pretty cool- you can see a little singed trail on one
of the chips going from the center of the chip to the outside!). I try
to replace those drives as a precaution because I've seen a lot of them
go the exact same way.
<sigh> This is what happens when you lend your DeLorean's battery to a
friend in need.. I need to get out and drive!

I don't know if that will help you, but I have a Jaz drive that is
SCSI and it's awesome, I don't think it's slower than a USB 1.0.
Despite of the fact that I am a huge fan of USB (I've had it since
like '99, when it wasn't that famous yet), I can't find any SCSI port
to hook up to my motherboard. I have a new computer it's 2.4G 500mhz
clock therefore I have nothing but IDE, PCI and USB, I don't think I
have a parellel port to be honest.
Bottomline is that I was fixing my roommate's computer and she has a
5yo Gateway. Her Quantum HD worked in my computer, it's a 12Gb, but
she has a lot of music and she bought a new western digital 80mb,
guess what, it fits but doesn't work in her computer, her BIOS
doesn't detect it, but it does in my Dell. Then I was reading the
HD's manual and it said something about that type of HD not working
in older computers. i'll read the manual again and see exactly why.
Probably only ebay will have a connector for your HD, since you said
it's not an IDE. Like I said, it's VERY hard to find any SCSI
adaptor. I never noticed if SCSI 2 is longer than IDE, I can check
that too and let you know, the hint to tell IDE and SCSI apart, at
least the way I do it is to look at the pins' thickness. The SCSI is
thin, kinda like that needle inside cable TV cables (maybe even
thinner), IDE is thicker.
Actually ebay is awesome to shop for HDs, it breaks down by size and
other details i.e. connector type. But if you are having problems,
you are better off with a new computer, not brand new, but newer. My
roommate spent like $50 on a new HD that is not working in her
computer, and $50 is about how much her computer's worth at this
point. I really don't know of any other HD connections other than
USB, IDE and SCSI, anyone???
