Brian, have you physically removed the pump and boot?  Those symptoms
sound to me like a kinked pick up hose.  If you have the original
hoses and baffle, it's not uncommon.  The whinning you heard could be
the pump sucking air.  How much fuel was in your tank when this
happend?  Did you turn a corner when it happened?
