The engines were purchesed from Renault. Obviously any large order like that and Renault would set the motors and transmissions up as per the customer's specs. It is also possible (but unlikey since DMC was trying to keep costs down) that DMC made some minor modifacations. I seriously doubt that there was any deliberate attempt to do anything to hurt DMC.
