You could be onto something, but it's probably not as nefarious as a sabotage conspiracy. While every PRV built came out of the same factory in Douvrin France, they were not all identical units. Each end user had slight design particularities (we're talking about before the 1988 radical redesign). Since Renault was not importing cars into the US -- yet (see the history of American Motors Corporation), I suppose it's possible they did not know the best way to meet US emissions regulations. Rather than simply asking the boys at Volvo, Renault could have cobbled together solutions of their own. If that's the case, they could have done better. DeLorean owners are the ones who suffer.
