Thanks, Dom! Yep, that's what we had to do! We took the door apart and noticed that one of the rods wasn't in its plastic guide -- there are two guides (more like "clips")... one was missing and the other was broken. A touch of super glue fixed the broken guide, and now the latching mechanism seems to work just fine. While we were at it we reinstalled the old steering wheel and my hands are much happier now. :) The doors are obviously not aligned correctly, though, and getting worse... the driver's door sits too low in front and the passenger door sits too high -- high enough now for the door light to be on even when it's closed and locked! There's just my friend and I to work on the car, so unless someone knows a two-man way of aligning the doors, it looks like I'll take the D on my trip to Houston in January and drop it off to have that fixed! In the meantime I'll listen to all suggestions on how to adjust the doors so that they will close properly. :) (Slamming the passenger door doesn't help, by the way.) Cheers!
