I suspect you are correct about the clogged air filter but another possability is the Lambda is not working and a dreaded PO or his mechanic turned the mixture screw richer to compensate. Before you even open the engine cover, if you don't hear the frequency valve then you have to get the Lambda going! Also common is a bad Control Pressure Regulator. It can wreck the warm-up cycle. Other things to look at are the mechanical AND vacuum advance, bad ignition wires, and worn spark plugs.
