Matt, The screws were allowing air into the air flow metering body and was most likely compensating for the micro switch that turns on the idle speed motor. Make sure the switch is clicking on and off and it's good. If it looks like it's working then the idle speed motor isn't opening up. Here is picture of what I mean. The motor or switch either could be bad.
