Subject: Stainless Steel Illusion Update

Just received word that the books are scheduled to arrive at the Port of
Long Beach THIS FRIDAY. Barring any lengthy delays with customs or shipping
from Long Beach to Texas, I would expect we will begin filling PRE-ORDERS by
the 29th of October - well ahead of schedule!!!

Additionally, I have received three "advance" copies today that were shipped
separately from the main shipment for review. All I can say is "WOW!" -
longtime DML'ers will remember when I first tried to have SSI reprinted in
1997-1998 - so seeing these copies, updated and reprinted really is the
culmination of years of effort. And that "new book" smell is really cool,
too!

If you have not yet pre-ordered your copy of the updated, second edition of
"DeLorean: Stainless Steel Illusion", do it now to ensure that your order is
shipped the day the books arrive.

Please let me know if I can be of further assistance.

Woo hoo!  More negative press for the Delorean!  Just what the Delorean
community needed!

At least the "removal" of a couple Deloreans from service will offset how
much our cars devalued in the past 24 hours...

What I don't get, is that JJ remarked at the beginning that

He seemed to have said that with a lot of poison and discust in his

another typical "made up their mind" type.  I doubt anybody could
ever convince him otherwise.

Funny thing, Don DID get his tools.  I called and asked him.

Louie,

Are there really that many heavily modified DeLoreans out there?  Most of
the ones I see may be changed to include a CD changer, bra, and other common
alterations that most people will do to their cars, regardless of the make.
It seems to me that any permanant modifications are extremely rare.

Every now and then you'll see a painted one, there's the single monster
truck, that red one with the shag carpeting I've seen on the DMCNews
website... a convertable, tow truck, and BTTF replicas are out there.
Of course these oddities will stand out to the general public; every car in
the line looks nearly identical to people who don't know them.

Realistically though, they've always been a joke to naysayers. From  Robin
Williams making a crack on his "Live At The Met" video about the owner of
the DeLorean whose rebate was in the trunk, Back To The Future, The Wedding
Singer, and even The Simpsons (Troy McClure's mode of transport).
These are examples of how the media perceives these cars (I expect that BTTF
was the most favourable of all).

It's all of the media attention that they've been given since their initial
release.  We as enthusiasts or owners take these cars very seriously,
because we've been struck by the bug; it is our belief that the DeLorean is
the coolest car on the planet (or certainly up there).  I don't think it
very likely that we'll be able to change that public perception.  To the
rest of the world, they're a curiosity... like the Bricklyn and Edsel...
Something odd that may pass you on the highway,

I missed Monster Garage the other night, but will catch it over the
weekend.. it's terrible that they destroyed a car (they could have given it
to me instead.. I'd give it a good home), but they were continuing the
tradition of lampooning it...

I'm with you, in that I take these cars seriously, but I wouldn't expect the
world to share in my awe for these cars.  So.. if you want to blame
someone... blame the British government, Hollywood, or JZD, but don't blame
the people who feel that since they own the car, they can change it.
(I wouldn't dream of it, beyond putting in a decent stereo, but that's me).

Just my two cents.

Mark...

and the rash of heavily altered cars that have come down the pipeline these
last couple of years. I agree with Aaron... the show was insulting to our
marque. I agree with Rich W. that all of these modified cars bring attention
to the DeLorean, and they may possibly stir interest in a car that has been
dead for more than two decades. But here's the catch 22- the fact that
people are making DeLoreans into hover crafts, monster trucks, convertibles
and the like makes the marque even more of a joke to naysayers.

A monster truck? A hover craft? I think not. If we want the world to take
our cars seriously, we've got to stop doing these absolutely retarded things
to the cars. It's getting attention in all the wrong ways. It just continues
the legacy that the DeLorean is a joke car.

for Dennis Gage to do a section on someone's concourse DeLorean for "My

I don't think you have to worry too much about this particular episode
doing too much damage to the credibility of the marque.  First of all,
it was a lousy episode.  Secondly, it did not focus on the car (it
didn't focus on anything, it was pointless.)  There were a few snide
remarks, but anyone with half an IQ point could tell the producers were
just doing all they could to save what was a flaming hulk of an episode.

You have to look at the entire Monster Garage ideal, which is in some
odd way, supposed to be tied in to Jesse James' image of "I don't give
a sh!t."  Anyone see the El Camino episode?  They didn't have to use
such a rare car, but they did because they knew it would generally piss
a lot of people off and at least draw a lot of attention.  Monster
Garage does PR in the absolute opposite manor that most Delorean owners
do.  Monster Garage wants to step on a lot of toes, make a lot of
people angry, cause a lot of controversy.  They're not out for respect,
only for the numbers.  Delorean owners are out for respect for the
marque, and hope to build that into positive PR.  Clearly when the two
worlds meet, there's a bit of a conflict.

I'm not a Delo owner (though I do have one as my OS X desktop
background right now...) but I know what its like to have a barrage of
negative press for a good car (anyone here ever put down a Citation
X-11?  Fantastic car http://www.geocities.com/citation_x11/)  I don't
think you have to worry about this being a down-turn for publicity, if
anything it's a down-turn for Monster Garage.

And PS... Don got a raw deal!

Hang on here.  It took me about 30 seconds on Google
to find a pic of a Mustang 4x4:

http://people.ucsc.edu/~kbrandt/pics/

It didn't appear to have been a Boss 302, but that
comparison just doesn't work.  You're comparing a
special edition of the total run of Mustangs to the
entire run of Deloreans.  A fair comparison would be
to compare the Boss 302 to say, the Gold Deloreans, or
the Factory turbos cars.  I haven't seen anyone
cutting any of those up.  Anyone with any intelligence
knows that often (not always), the cars that get
severly customized, were the victims of some sort of
damage and are now in their "second lives".

To be honest, I've been to some car shows where there
were some "daily driver" Deloreans that were flat out
embarrassing.  (coat-hangers, duct tape and dirt)
THAT pulls down a marque.  I can hear the spectators
now, "It can't be that valuable if he won't even wash
it."  I myself am not into the monster truck thing,
but come on, the thing won at the World of Wheels!
(Congrats Rich!) An "unmodified", droopy-door,
ripped-seat, falling-headliner, warped fascia daily
driver Delorean cannot be a better reflection on the
marque than Rich's custom.

I'll go back to what I said on the front page of my
website: "I respect quality.." (in any form).  Most of
the customs out there have been disassembled and
restored to a level that the average Delorean has not.
So in my opinion, if there's a problem with some
car's reflecting negatively on the marque, it's not
the customs, it's the poorly maintained/neglected
cars.

Well another interesting delimea. Unfortunetly I don't
see the purpose of this project. To me a hover craft
DeLorean is just well... stupid. Thats my opion. And
the sheer fact that anyone would bash out windows and
what not does not show alot of respect for the D. I
was bombarded this morning by comments from this
episode. None of them good. Nothing positive at all!
If this episode has done anything it has hurt the
image of the DeLorean instead of helping it. I haven't
seen the episode yet. Unfortuently I don't have cable
or DSS. Id like to get a hold of the episode so I can
see it for myself, if anyone has a copy they would run
off for me that would be kewl. I can even mail you a
blank tape. All I know is I worked very hard for my
piece of the dream. and I know there are alot of
people out there working just as hard to achive there
little piece of the dream. It hurts to see one of
these cars destroyed for no reason. As a foot note I'm
sure someone is going to stand up and tell me I'm
full of it and this brought all this publicity to the
Delorean and what a wonderful thing it was and a great
project and yack yack yack. I don't see the point of
this. This does nothing for the DeLorean image. If you
want to make awarness and bring people into the
DeLorean comunity. then show what these cars can be
restored to. show them  the before and the after.
These cars are a legacy. We own them for such a short
time then pass them on to the next lucky owner. If I
saw someone do this to my D after all my hard work I'd
just cry and mine isn't even finsihed yet. Thats my
.02 I just don't see the point at all. Please if you
have this one episode or the rock crawler on tape let
me know how I can get a copy of them.

thanx

I am a devoted lurker on the list, but I felt I had to post something
about the "Monster Garage" show.

Someone already mentioned that the DeLorean fanatics were portrayed as
"nerds" on the show, which I thought was insulting. I don't own a
DeLorean, but I know that if I did, I would definitely qualify as a
"DeLorean nerd" according to "Monster Garage." This was the only time
that I had ever watched MG, but I have a feeling that Jesse James is
never portrayed as a "motorcycle nerd," which he definitely is if Don &
Co. are "DeLorean nerds!" So that was unfair.

Also, is it just me, or is Jesse James a crybaby? Seriously - he acted
as though he was being forced into this project! I am sure he gets paid
a decent amount of money for doing the show, and I doubt that the
guests on the show (Don, etc.) were paid (and if they were, I doubt the
pay even compared to what JJ gets). I do agree that the initial idea
was kind of silly - when they showed the 3-D animation of how they were
going to put the DeLorean panels on the hovercraft, I told my boyfriend
that it seemed kind of lame. However, if JJ wants the project done his
way, he should have been there from the beginning! Throwing a temper
tantrum and riding off on his motorcycle was not exactly the "macho"
thing to do.

Anyway, enough of my complaining. I thought that everyone did a great
job, considering that they had less time and less people working on the
project than they were supposed to have. Although the hovercraft did
not work, if they had been allowed more time, I have full confidence
that it would have worked beautifully. Too bad Jesse James had to make
up for his temper tantrum by destroying it (although that did look kind
of cool, in my opinion). I am sure that many list members would have
gladly taken some of those "worthless" body panels off his hands!

I am only guessing here, but knowing everyone here and also watching the
show enough I might have an opinion on JJ attitude.  Several times it was
mentioned about Rich making a hovercraft yet it was never mentioned that it
was a DMC hovercraft.  IMHO it seemed JJ was pissed about making a monster
someone else has done.  How is that original?  How is that creative?  I was
a bit let down by the whole thing myself seeing this project already done,
and by one of the MG builders to boot.

"Next week on MG JJ and crew turns a standard Lincoln Town Car into a

too much argument and you could see JJ wasn't really that interested in

Ok.  I very rarely post on the list, and I even hesitated to voice my
opinion on this one, but I felt the need to just to get it off my chest.  I
have watched Monster Garage since the initial airing, and the thought of
what they could do if they ever came up with a good idea for our cars kept
in my mind over the past months.  When it popped up as an idea on the
making of" episode, my interest was definately piqued.  When it was posted
on the list that it was happening, I was excited.

I am no longer excited.

When each of us bought our cars, we knew right away that we were joining
into a rather eclectic society.  Many of us don't agree on whether we should
modify or not.  Many don't agree on whether they should be driven at all.
In some cases, many don't agree on the true beauty of the car, even though
they own one.  But we have all agreed at one time or another that we wanted
one, and wanted one bad enough to get one, or in many cases, research it
enough to know what we were getting into.

We are not "nerds"

The episode started off looking sabotaged.  The team lacked even help on the
design, then was held accountable for it.  The narrator had more respect for
the car than Jesse James did.  Accusing Don and Rich of hamming it up just
to be on tv?  There are easier ways to get onto TV rather than smashing up
classic cars.

Rich, Don; we are all sorry.  You have always, and still continue, to bring
positive light to the DMC world.  This looked like short of an ambush.

Yes, these are all just opinions, and I'm sure that there are as many people
who have the exact opposite opinion.

Yes, it's just a car.  But it's a car that we all have put a lot of work
into and get a lot of enjoyment out of.

And on top of that, it's just a TV show.

One that I will not watch again.

Sigh!  When I saw them destroy it, I really did get tears in my
eyes...not QUITE crying, but damn, I couldn't believe anyone could do
that to a SACRED car!

Obviously the recent Moster Garage episode caught the attention of a
lot of DMLers. As I'm sure you have noticed, the moderating criteria
have therefore temporarily been relaxed.

With the initial message barrage hopefully easing, further posts

I was once approached to purchase possibly a fourth "Gold DeLorean about
10 years ago.  It was perported to have been built from the spare body
panels supporting the two Am. Ex. cars that were built.  The problem was
that there had been a driver door that had been replaced and so this
fourth car was without a proper door.It therefore had it's driver door
gold electroplated in a makeshift plastic bag of platiing solution
instead of the large (expensive) tank that was created for the original
build.  The driver door was duller and not a very good visual match with
the rest of the car.  It may be that this car has re-surfaced or maybe
this is the "last" car mentioned below.

Check that you have the updated version of the pipe that the switch
fits into, the switch should be on the BOTTOM of the pipe. The earlier
style had the switch on top and an air bubble would get caught under
it and then it didn't work right. Put a Fanzilla in so the switch
isn't carring the full load of the fans. Make sure there are no
combustion pressure leaks, if combustion gases are leaking into the
cooling system you will constantly have to bleed the gases out. A
leaking head gasket or cracked head can be the cause (I am assuming
this engine was overheated to have needeed head work). You may also
have to replace the circuit breaker for the cooling fans. It might be
interesting to measure the current draw on the fans, they may be
pulling too much which could damage the switch.

Glen, Welcome to the DML group. There are several things you can do to make
the cooling system reliable. Just follow the link. Also, I had several
problems of certain otterstats that failed within months. There are better
ones without having to wire the fans direct. Call up to 9:pm for tech help.

Hi all
I just joined the group the other day.  This is my second Delorean that
I have owned since 92.  I've had the heads rebuilt and a low mileage
bottom end put in and have had this annoying problem with the cooling
fans not coming on when they are supposed to.  Don Steger has replaced
the cooling sensor on the engine 3 times in the last year.  It works
for a while then only works intermittently.   Does anyone have any
ideas what would make it stop working?  Also I have been thinking about
just wiring in a switch to turn them on manually.  Where can I get some
information about what wires I need to tap into to run a switch in the
car to turn the fans on when I want?

Oh yeah, First Delorean had over 350,000 miles before it went away
without ever opening up the engine.

TIA

Glenn

The accumulator holds pressure to prevent the fuel vapourising in the
lines when hot. Allowed to cool, this vapour condenses, if cranked, you
have to push all these bubbles through the injectors before it'll fire.

John, Go to the bottom of the page on my web site under fuel systems. There

Well, you could relieve fuel pressure by first not using the car for a day
before you do this job and also by loosening a hose on say, the fuel
distributor's lower chamber such as the input line.  this should relieve as
much pressure
as possible but it will still be full of gas.

if you remove your ash tray you can see if you can get thru the access hole
inside the car to hold the lines as you loosen them.  i have not done this
job
before but i understand that the lines if very old and rusty will easily
bend,
causing you more problems. i would recommend using lots of PB Blaster and
buying some flare-nut wrenches in the proper size.

If you're talking about how hard it is to find the grooved hood seperately, then I'd say fairly hard. I've seen the gas flap and flat hoods on ebay fairly often. It's kind of odd... because the majority of DeLoreans built came with the grooved hoods minus gas flap. You probably know, but the flat hoods are the only ones that can still be bought NOS.

Louie's correct but unfortunately preaching to the choir.

Still, in defense of modified ("personalized"?) DeLoreans:

Have already made several externally visible mods to #5939:
-4 way turn signals
-Swapped rear tail/brake lights (and added 3rd brake light)
-Lowered front end
-De-emissioned and simplified engine
-Added footwell courtesy lights (trim panel courtesy lights coming soon)

These are just the one's you can see. Not as radical as DRex, but mods
nevertheless. Am sure more will follow.

Of course it's my car to do with as I wish, but moreso: I made mods
with best of intentions. Thoughts in my head exact opposite of
smashing a window simply for sake of smashing a window (which I
believe was hammed up for MG BTW). Mods express pride, not contempt.
Should be evident to public.

Regarding MG: consider the source. Show is highly scripted & directed
for maximum testosterone effect. Obviously actual owners were not
target audience. Don't take it too personally because it wasn't our
show. And supply of vehicles is still plentiful enough to allow such
foolishness. If average MG viewer already has unfavorable opinion of
the marque doubt if he/she would respond favorably to a "nerd" with
factual information. And those in public who would probably responded
unfavorably to MG.

Let Jesse do what he wants in his driveway and I'll do what I want in
mine.

Subject: thoughts from my first car show

I took a drive to my first non-Delorean car show and I wanted to share my
experiencesâ.The car show was in Ocean City, MD. A very popular beach resort on
the Atlantic Ocean here in MD. They often have events during the off season to
attract off peak visitors. This past weekend they had their annual fall show
and there were cars from 1920s all the way up to a new Chrysler Crossfire.

Here are my observations:

I was the only Delorean there which is different then the usual events I have
attended. What made that nice is that you were not really comparing your car
with (and jealous of :-) other Deloreanâs. There were about 1500 cars in all
and it was very crowded. Had it not been raining it would have been even
bigger.

Once I put my doors up the car got more attention than I ever imagined. At
any given time there were about 15 people around the car. I think at one point
it hit 30. When I took a break and walked around I could see my wife taking
questions like a press secretary at the white house.

I was near then end of a row and after about 2 hours of constant crowds at my
car the owner of a high performance Camaro with a nitros (sp) bottle in the
trunk, got tired of seeing everyone stop at my car and moved his car to another
part of the lot. What I found is that although a lot of these car are faster,
more colorful and have more collectors, the Delorean has the one thing these
cars do notâuniqueness and gull wing doors.

The questions were the normal âwhere do you get parts?â and âhow much do
they cost?â questions. People are still shocked by how âinexpensiveâ these cars
are.  I really enjoyed talking to the 100s of people asked some really good
questions. I let some people get in the car and see what it felt like. Several
kids got there pictures taken by happy mom's.

I did not realize that the PT cruiser had such a big followingâat least 20 of
them all painted in far out colors.

There were two shelby 457 kit cars that were beautiful.

I was treated with total respect and no drug jokes or rediculous
accusations...about 5 older men accurately knew the whole history and told me they had
never seen one in person and I made their year. A lot of them acknowledged the
guts it took to take on the âestablishmentâ.

I had several people who told me they were lifelong mechanics and we talked
about the Delorean engine. They told me that back in the 70s and 80s it was
difficult to get Volvoâs to idle smoothly. One mechanic who ran a service area
told me he had people that would bring in new Volvos after 6 months and ask him
if he could âsmooth out the idle.â
I told him a lot of owners spend time and money trying to get this car to
idle perfectly and have a difficult time.

We owe a lot more to the movie then a lot of owners will admitâA lot of moms
were grabbing their kids saying it was the âBack to the future car.â Since I
have a flux capicitor it made it even more like the movie for them. Even some
of the younger kids that were 8-10 years old had seen the movie and knew the
carâ.If Travis had his conversion car there he would have had to beat people
off with a stick.

If you are ever feeling run down with owning this car because of repairs or
cost,or start doubting why you got one  in the first place, go to a well
advertised car show in your area. I felt totally recharged and met a lot of great
people who thanked me for bringing the car to the show.

By the wayâ.I drove about 300 miles round trip with no problems. So far it
has been over a year and half since my last problemâknock on stainless. I would
guess in all about 50 people took pictures and about 10 videotaped. My wife,
who was never a big fan of the car, enjoyed herself and had a lot of fun
meeting everyone.
