Pros/Cons? The main objection that most auto enthusiasts have to automatic car washes is that they are there to make your car CLEAN, not to protect it's surface. The chemicals tend to be very strong and remove wax in addition to dirt. The machines that use brushes, etc., further damage the paint through small scratches that dull the finish. Then they finish with a "wax" that isn't very effective since wax in a water base really won't stick. With a DMC-12, these things really aren't a problem, except for maybe with the fascias. The biggest problem I'd see is the spinning brushes breaking off antennas, cracking louvers, etc. There's high pressure water (sometimes followed by high-pressure air for drying) that will find any loose part and send it flying, in addition to conveniently finding any hidden leaks in your door seals. Ideally, you want the grain in the stainless to be front-back for the best finish, but I think you'd have to go through a hundred such car washes to have a deleterious effect. Skip the wax treatment, since nothing will effectively stick to SS and at best you'll end up with ugly streaks. Refinish the entire car about once a year with a Scotch-Brite pad and you should be OK. And after you make the adjustments you reseal the hole again otherwise you leave a big vacuum leak there. You should be able to lean out the idle mixture without killing the engine. The adjustment screw is attached to the paddle lever inside the manifold. When you place the allen wrench into the screw you should see the wrench move up and down when you apply pressure to the paddle. I have a procedure for using a dwell meter to adjust your CO mixture at http://www.vabch.com/dsontos/tuneup.html Dave Sontos VIN 02573 Chris C wrote: > We have tried adjusting the mixture but it will only > run rich and the gas consumption is very poor {about 18mpg on > highway}. > Thanks, > John 16727 > ________________________________________________________________________ ________________________________________________________________________ Message: 3 Date: Sun, 04 Jun 2000 18:19:52 PDT From: "Lynn Metz" <metzlynn@xxxxxxxxxxx> Subject: Re: cooling fans DMCJOE: Fan problem is fixed. I was testing voltages again per your advice and looking into some suggestions by Darren Decker when I discovered the problem. The terminal block (for lack of the proper term) that the brown/orange power wire runs to after the relay and before the fuses (wiring upgrade) had some really bad connections (melted connectors). Upon fixing this, I was back in business. Thanks for the help. Brian 16584 > >The problem is probably at the fan fail module socket, fan relay socket, or >the circuit breaker. Does anybody have appropriate color codes for the later style wheels (82)? A buddy of mine owns a body shop, and he said that he'll blast and repaint for $35 a rim... can't pass that up. With only 9000 miles, you would think that the rims would be in pristine condition, but there is some odd paint blotchyness on a few of them. Seems to be factory original. Also, the garage that I keep my car in is below an apartment that has an occassional water leak. The garage also has a dryer vent in it. The water leak, combined with lint from the dryer vent has left very deep, very awful water spots on the hood. Any recommendations for a good STRONG chemical cleaner? (besides gasoline, but I'm not above using horribly caustic chemicals :) Tried repeated washings, windex, stainless polish... the spots just laugh it off and come right back. On a side note, while showing my car to some people the other day, one mentioned that he cleans large stainless tanks at his workplace. He swears by baby oil applied by cheesecloth; says that it keeps them extremely shiny, and keeps fingerprints away. Anybody ever tried this? Thanks! First of all, I am an Industrial Designer. In this profession I learned, in detail, the value of images, ie: an image is worth 1000 words and everything along those lines. Flynt's releasing of the tape to the media allowed them to present a very dramatic and stirring sequence of images to the public. You might notice how most of the people you talk to about JZD seem to think that he is still in jail. This is partly because there were no dramatic images of him being acquitted. People only seem to remember the bust, and that he was arrested. This is no coincidence! Again, In my opinion, if Larry Flynt hadn't released that tape to CBS, people (in general) may have never viewed that scene in the hotel and quickly forgotten about JZD's trouble with the law. This might have, in turn, made it easier for DeLorean to get his company rolling again, but we'll never know now.
