I always looked specifically for the carwash with brushes instead of chamois
or brushless. It always seemed that the brushes followed the grain of the
stainless and it always looked great.

So how about this:
Lets each agree to each take a small part of the manual, transcribe
the text as a Word file (or whatever) and scan the corresponding
images. There are over a thousand of us, right? Even if only half of
us sign up, it would be a relatively trivial amount of work for any
one individual.
I propose that we:
(a) first recreate the existing manual as-is in machine-readable form.
(b) appoint an editor (or editors) from among the experts on the list
and begin an ongoing project to correct and augment the manual, with
the experts exerting editorial control.
(c) put the resulting machine-readable documents in the public domain
(i.e., free for all). If somebody wants to try to make money by
producing nice printed copies, CD ROMs, or hypertexts, great. But
anybody could download the source files from the DML site for free.
All this would require a bit of organization, but it really doesn't
sound like that much work, given the aggregate resources available on
the list.
So what do you all say?

Before I ever knew anything about the value of the book I poured over it the first week that I owned the car, and it is a VERY interesting book about the car with alot of facts. I think it is totally worth the money...

I have been thinking about the same thing for a while now. I work at a
lawnmower repair shop, and all day long I look up parts for co-workers,
customers and I order parts. So, looking up schematics is all I do all day
long. There is a program that ARI Network Services makes which is called
PartSmart that is exactly what the DMC Dealers need to look up parts and
manage their inventory. I have been thinking about asking some
representatives that I know at ARI, to see how much it would be for them to
make a program like that for DMC. PartSmart is a program that many of the
lawn equipment companies use instead of distributing workshop books and
microfishe, because it is a lot easier. If you want to know more about
PartSmart, go to their web page (www.arinet.com) then click on "Products"
at the top of the screen then on the new screen click on "PartSmart" on the
top left. If there is a lot of interest in this, next time I talk to ARI, I
will ask about it and let everyone on the list know what they tell me. Let
me know.

When I receive my batch of messages, I normally read the subject and
either read the message or instantly hit Delete. If needing the
Limited Edition message board URL, I might have that in my favorites
list and could help, but I don't really care to read about someone
with a Gas smell. So, I would just hit delete and the question goes
unanswered. Plus, It makes a mess of the archives. This is not
a personal attack on the above example because it happens all the time.
So, please just try to take notice before sending.
Ok, I'm done complaining now. Back to work on my car, 2 weeks till
Cleveland !

We continue to have problems with our '83 DMC. We have gone through
the entire injection system, cleaning the fuel tank, replacing the
fuel pump, filter, accumulator, and injector rubber seals. We have
also replaced the oxygen sensor. Originally the distributor plunger
was jammed but we freed this using injector cleaner and compressed
air. All the injectors are spraying with a normal spray pattern. We
have checked the fuel pressure, control pressure, and rest pressure,
and all are normal. The car will not idle happily and hunts. The
contol pressure regulator is clean and the frequency valve buzzes
during warm up. The compression is consistent in all 6 cylinders
within 10 psi. We have tried adjusting the mixture but it will only
run rich and the gas consumption is very poor {about 18mpg on
highway}. We have changed the plugs and set the timing to 13 degrees
BTDC as specified. The engine revs up fine and smoothly when the car
is stationary. Under load, it accelerates in spurts and then
hesitates. When decelerating it jerks and hunts. We cannot detect any
vacuum leaks.Can you give us any suggestions?

Actually converting from Word to PDF isn't all that bad of a Process. All
that is needed is a copy of Adobe Acrobat (not reader). I own a copy and
would be more than happy to help out with creating the PDF files.

Just the 83's had the dual color. These were the ones assembled after DMC
went into bankruptcy. I've heard that it was due to not having enough
pieces all in one color, so they came up with the dual color interior.

I've followed the recent discussion here on the DML, regarding fuel smell
inside the car.
Right now, on Ebay, there is a fuel tank for sale. In the description it
says, and I quote:
"Don't buy a new one because it will not have a fuel vent in it and your car
will smell like gas."
Now, my question is this: Is there any difference in the DMC fuel tanks?
Does some fueltanks have a vent and some not? From what VIN did the change
come? If the above statement is true, then I would guess that low VINs have
the tanks with no fuel vent and higher VINs have the tanks with the vent.
Based on the DMCs improvements during production.
Also, what Im curious about is that the statement seems to suggest that all
NOS fuel tanks from the DMC suppliers are of the type that has no vents???
Can someone clarify this?

Also my headliners are definitely grey, but I know a previous owner had them

Ok, I have a few questions about the automatic car washes. I have been debating on putting my car thru one of the washes because I am too lazy to wash my car every week.
1) If it IS a 'TOUCHLESS' car wash, the car should come out AOK, right?
2) What about wax? Should we decline that offer? If the car gets waxed, then what?
3) And just what would happen if the car was washed and you didn't go 'with' the grain? What happens?

My DeLorean recently suffered modrate (10-15 dents) hail damage in a storm here in South Carolina. I was in St. Louis or I would have sacrificed my body! My wife's Acura is a lot worse parked right next to it.
Has anyone had theirs repaired with similar damage?
Any luck with the paintless dent repair people?
Anything/one I should avoid?

Hello List,
I met a guy on Ebay that owned a DMC last year by accident, then I
foundout he lives about 15 minutes away. He came over in his DMC-12 to pick
up the item he won, last fall . He said I would have to come down and see
his other vehicles. well, I finally got the chance today.
I walked in and he had the first and last Bricklin sports cars ever made
up on hoiste in "carcoons". Both have extremely low miles and are 100%
original. I must say that these cars are very unique. He had everything
bricklin ever made. dealer signs and hundreds of pounds of
literature,brochures and magazines. He has all the original sketches and
even paintings painted by the designer. He even had a brick from the
bricklin factory signed by Malcom bricklin. I took pictures but I dont know
if they will turn out well becuase the cars were in the carcoons. He said he
will sell them if he gets a good offer. I beleive he bought them from a
museum. I think a bricklin is going to be on my "future" car list. he said
they do have more problems than a DeLorean but if you buy a 76 they operate
much better than the 74's. do any of you on the list own bricklins?
His DeLorean was probably one of the nicest examples out there. It had
only 4,200 miles, black interior, dealer side stripe and a perfect body. I
beleive the vin# was 2348 but not for sure. I took many pictures of it and
will post them in the vault when they get developed. The De Lorean is also
put on a hoiste when not in use to preserve the original tires. I think I
talked him into going to Cleveland! That surely made my day, seeing all of
these rare automobiles in one garage.
Other cars in his collection included Yellow,purple,red,& black
prowlers(4),2 pt cruisers, SLK compressor,VW beetle, 99 VIPER(just sold),2000
Corvette,87 Fiero with only 30 miles, morgan 3 wheeler and about 30
motorcycles.

I belong to a motorhome club for a now obsolete motorhome, and about 15
years ago one of the members took it upon himself to make a new updated
service manual that covered all the mods as well as regular items....He
wrote manuals for aircraft for the military for a living so was well
experienced at it. It was probably 2 inches and in loose leaf form. He
did in alone with the help of his wife and I think probably all 500 members
of the club purchased one at $50.00 each. It is THE Bible of that
particular motorhome and although he is gone now, it is still very much in
demand.
This was a long time ago and nowadays the ONLY way to go would be on a CD I
would think.

This is a touchy subject, so I'll try to keep everything unbiased...
I don't think that Larry Flynt either helped or hurt John DeLorean
either way. JZD's lawyers did object to the tape being released for
reasons of keeping prospective jurors unbiased as they feared the
tape might hurt their defense. I can understand where they were
comming from because the tape did pose a huge threat.
On the flip side, once people saw the tape they acctually sympathised
with JZD. Quoted in many books, a laid off factory worker in NY
stated some thing to the effect that, 'he (the caller) wished that
his boss would have risked selling coke to save his job.'
All things considered, I don't think that Dan Rather playing the FBI
tape on the CBS Evening News had any affect on the DeLorean trial one
way or the other. The defense presented their case and won. The truth
is what gave John DeLorean his victory, not an "entrapment strategy"
as reports always print. That itself ensues that he's guilty, which
is wrong.
In closing, like him, hate him, or just plane dont't care. Larry
Flynt s thecnicly a part of the DeLorean story. But I don't think he
really had the impact that alot of people implicate. IMHO Maur Dubin
played a more significant role than he did.

p.s. for everyone that ever wondered, Larry Flynt recieved the tape
from John DeLorean's first set of attorneys. The were specialized in
reality, not criminal law. $300K later, JZD let them go and retained
Weitzman. Flynt purchased the tape for $5K from the office manager of
the first law firm, Huffsteder, Miller, Carlson, and Beardsley. And
then decided not to pay him. <"De Lorean" page 245> It was not the
Samurai undergoing accupuncture treatment in China for a groin injury
as Flynt stated. But everyone hear has probably guess that by now. :)

IMO the touchless car washes are fine for the D. With the high pressure of
the water, they are also very good at discovering leaks. :)
The wax hasn't been too much of a problem with my car, unless the car is
overly dirty (Especially with greasy hand prints). The wax can then make
the prints a little harder to get out.
If you go through a wash where the brushes move against the grain, you run
the risk of putting scratches in the car. . . you are basically re-graining
the stainless steel in a different direction. If you want to stay
completely safe, find a good ole' self service car wash.

then what?

I think the damage to JZD's image was done upon his arrest. The worst
damage that the video did was to delay the trial, since it supported JZD's
