jeremiah,
All of the factory 85 mph speedo's were of the 15, 25, 35 style. An after
market 170 mph reads 10, 30, 50, etc..There were no altered tail lights
for
European cars. In order to accommodate the large plates the black
fiberglass plate mounting between the tail lights was removed.

You don't need specs, just order one from PJ Grady, DMC, D-1, etc.

Mat not only does having smaller tires improve basic handling, lowering
the
front from factory specs improves it even more. As little as an inch and a
half is both noticeable and improves the look of the D as well.

I will leave the physics to some one who write better than I.

I believe the man in the Pontiac commercial says:  "Shouldn't there be a
national holiday for the  guy who invented the GTO?"

If someone wants to send a petition to Congress asking for John
DeLorean Day, I will be happy to sign it.  Actually, Ireland might be
willing
to declare a real JZD Day . . .

Anyway, this commercial gives me a laugh every time I see it, but not for
the reason GM intended!

Thomas,
Correction; stainless steel panels were cut and brushed in England after
stamping in West Germany, they were than sent to the factory. The finish
on
the stainless was not part of the die stamping but of metal brushing. The
die's were destroyed because the British government was upset at John
DeLorean for not paying "the bill" and not following through with what he
had promised. It was a rather dumb way to get revenge, but that's history.
Fortunately there is, with the exception of the left front fender, plenty
of virgin stainless panels in Columbus Just thought you might like to
know the details. Keep up your keen interest in these amazing machines.

I too was having a similar problem but with the passenger side door.
The Front latch was jammed but the rear was free.  I tried to gentle
fenagle door so that it at least closed correctly but surprisingly, both
of the doors locked!!

The other bad thing was that I left the car running with the keys in the
ignition.  I had the car stored 25 minutes away from where I lived so I
had to go back home to get a duplicate key and access the locks again.
Very distressing event for me...

My understanding is that the British government got upset when J.Z.D.
ran out of operating funds. They felt that the money lent to him for the
company [by them,as to develop jobs and a better life for Irish] was
spent on his U.S. ski equipment manufacturing company,  unnecessary
entertaining and high living.
As far as retrieving [from a deep body of water in the U.K.]  or
re-manufacturing any of these body dies, the cost would be
prohibitive.Either of these prosesses would cost millions, which could
never be recouped by sales of the body panals. As for the body surface
graining, this was and is accomplished with a hand held belted machine
made in Warren [or Centerline] Michigan specificly for DMC. Unfortuately
they were no longer availible shortly after DMC's demise [I called them
looking for one]. I'm sure many D body repair shops have these. If any
one has one they want to sell please e-mail me.    Thanks,   Dan

I think what the article really meant by "smaller diameter wheels in
front" is larger wheels in the rear. The larger tires in the rear help to
make up for the extra weight in the rear (the engine) and keep the back
end from sliding out.

Man..  What I wouldn't do to own a five-speed.  <sigh>

I don't understand, I just had my automatic tranny rebuilt,
I'm not exactly sure what they did, but I know they had
the hydrolic torque converter rebuilt, they put in a new
stator, a "master kit" ( whatever that is ), and a new
computer.

Well, here it is, less than two months later, and as I
was driving I heard a big "klunk", and I wasn't driving
anymore, I was just rolling...  The car will roll forward
slightly in Drive, and backwards in Reverse now, but
only when the engine is over 3000 rpms.  Does
anyone out there know what might have happened?
This is the same symptom my car had before I had
it rebuilt.. Am I just doomed?  Is there anything that
can be done? Has anyone successfully converted
their automatic to a 5-speed?  What are the costs
involved?

Thanks guys, any help would be greatly appreciated!

Dave, I assume that you have plenty of transmisssion fluid.  I had a
truck that would get low on tranny fluid and it would not hardly move
until I filled it back up.  Also, you should check the back issues, I
recall that there have been many discussions about the automatic.

end up in the western suburbs.  I'd also check with Mike Substelny

Usually not. At the stock height with an empty gas tank, the stock shocks
are almost all the way extended at rest. However an extreme lowering job
could require shorter shocks, I believe that NAPA HD94037 (thanks Don
Gowler)  will do the trick although spacers on the lower mounting bolt
are required.

Also - regarding your clutch line question - most or all of the major
parts vendors have a braided stainless line kit available for somewhere
around $120, so you shouldn't have to mess with the size. The fittings on
the ends are unique.

Dave,
I'd say that you should call the shop that just repaired your
transmission & have them re-do it at their cost - it should still be
under warranty. Check the receipt & any warranty papers that you got
when you paid them. Any reputable shop would stand behind their work. If
they don't, there's always small claims court.

James,
Step one would be to isolate brake squeal as the source of the problem. Go
to your local parts store and get a tube of "Break Quite" or any other
similar product. Pull your front pads and apply the solution as directed.
While your in the process be sure that your anti-squeal shims are in
place.
If the noise goes away after applying the product  than this is the source
of your problem. By the way this is common in DeLoreans.

Scott,
"Less than two months later"?, It sounds to me like you don't have a
problem at all, as long as you have a 90 day warrantee.
Now here is some info on your transmission: we have found that 9 out of 10
times transmission problems are related to the computer governor. The
Renault R-30 is a strong and reliable unit, capable of handling a heavy
footed Delorean driver. The only reason I could see a desire to convert to
a 5 speed is the desire to shift. Converting to a 5 speed would be costly,
in addition to the trans, bell housing, clutch assembly, and clutch
hydraulics you would also have to change the entire shifting assembly
including all links to the tranny. A clutch & brake pedal assembly would
have to be added and there are some electrical changes that must be made.

Just a side note:

I have been working on a computer model of the DeLorean which is something
like 80% complete for the out side. It had the stainless panels,
headlights
(that work), wheels and tires All the glass.  Left to do is the engine cvr
and louvers, and of course the whole interior.

When it's finished it will be available for down load as a .dxf file.

If it is after you have backed up, it may be a slight unevenness in the
break pads or just a bit to much clearance in the pads. The wheels should
turn with a slight drag to them. There are shims for this problem. some
times just removing the pads and lightly rubbing the outer perimeter edge
with a bit of sand paper or crocus cloth can also correct this problem.
The
chirping sound is when  the disk hits the pads and the pad is bounced or
pushed back just slightly, the pad then returns to its original position
bouncing against the disk. If this is when the breaks are applied you
generally hear a squealing sound, when no pressure is applied it makes the
chirping sound.

Does anyone know of a source for brake pad anti-squeal shims?

Dave, your symptoms sound exactly like something that happened to me
two years ago in my five-speed when I thought I had wiped out my
clutch.

I ordered a new clutch, then found out that my old clutch was 100% fine!

It turns out that I had somehow stripped the splines out of one of my stub
axles.  They tell me this is very rare, but it can happen.

This is easy to check.  Have someone outside the car watching the axle
while you give it some gas and try to make it move.  If the axle turns
while the wheel stays still, then you have the rare stripped spline
syndrome.

If this is your problem, the solution is to order a new stub axle.  While
installing it, be very careful not to damage the wheel bearing.

Good luck!

FYI:

This is just my own observation with the cars I have owned.  I have
found that when entering the car,  it seems to cause less strain on the
door handle and internal latch mechanics, if you slightly press down on
the
door with you other hand while lifting the handle.  I'm sure this will
extend the
life of those plastic handles that many folks still have.

Don't hold me to this but I find it strange that they "Rebuilt"
your converter.  I have always thought that you replaced them
as a unit.  They are sealed I thought ?   Better take it back to
the shop for them to fix it right or refund, then call Rob Grady.

Subject: DML: What is my car worth

Can someone please tell me about what my Delorean is worth.  The car is
a 1981 VIN# 2009, Auto trans, Windshield antenna, Gas flap, Locking gas
cap, Black leather, and factory radio.  The car is in Mint condition
other than the dash that is cracked.  Thank you for the help.

P.S.  I am not selling the car.  Thank you.

I was just curious if there was a front strut tower brace available
for
the DeLorean.  It would of course require that you modify the luggage
compartment spare tire cover...

The DeLorean doesn't have struts, it has upper and lower A arms with coil
springs independent of the shock absorbers. As a result the spring towers
are quite low and resisit flexing much more than the higher towers used on
Macpherson strut front suspensions. I can't see any advantage to bracing
in
the DeLoreans case.
