Subject: DML: rough idle
Having just completed my winter DeLorean project of engine gaskets , it
now idles rough and "appears" to be running rich at idle. Lambda
sensor,wires, distributor cap, rotor, plugs were all replaced. It revs and
runs smooth on the road.
Also, has anyone worked on the guts of the fuel tank sensor? My electric's
work fine when I remove it from the tank but the float, which moves freely
on the slide, does not go to the top when submerged in gasoline. There is
no part breakdown in the books. Any ideas?

I have an old DeLorean shop manual for sale. I used to work
at a dealership which sold these cars, and my old boss gave
me this manual over ten years ago. I have no use for it.
It is an almost 2" thick book of single-sided pages loosely bound
between two worn black covers. It looks like a photocopy, but I
can verify that this is exactly as the manual came to our dealership
from the factory.
I will accept the best offer over $20, and the buyer will have to pay
for shipping from southern California.

Finally got #4761 back from having some electrical work done (turned out

be bad battery terminals), take it out for a drive this morning, and all

a sudden there's a thunk and the engine is much louder.
I think the left-side exhaust manifold came loose.
Now, how do I fix this?
Can I just tighten a bolt or two and be OK?

If you have done any shopping around you may have noticed there are not
many choices on a matched set of tires for the DeLorean. The front 195's
are plentiful, its the rear 235's that are hard to find. My pick for ride,
availability, and price would be the Yokohama A-378 or AVS U+4. Keep in
mind that the DeLorean has a precision suspension system with very little
room for miss-alignment. Buy your tires at the best price you can find but
don't skimp on alignment. Insist on a shop that does "on the car
balancing", it may cost a few dollars more but will be worth it in
derivability and reduced tire wear.

Jim,
The posts that you refer to are studs, double ended bolts which often have
different threads at either end, course on one end and fine on the other.
Some have the same on both ends. They are threaded into the head and and
since the head is aluminum and the stud is steel, they are often very
difficult to remove especially if you break one off. It could mean
removing
the head and drilling it out. If you have ever tried to drill out a steel
bolt in a piece of aluminum, you know that it's very easy to get into the
aluminum and have to re-center the hole and install a hilicoil, probably a
machine shop job on a head.
The PRV engine was designed to be used in several different cars with as
many
different manifolds. The extra tapped holes in the head are for other
installations and are not used for the Delorean manifold.
Studs are normally removed by putting two nuts as far down as they will
go,
locking the two by turning them in opposite directions, and turning the
bottom nut to remove the stud.
Exhaust manifolds are never very pretty even of they have been chromed
after
a few months' use. The only ones that look good after a few years use are
the ones in boats that use a water jacket to keep them cool. Fortunately
the
manifolds on the Delorean are far enough down so you can hardly see them
unless you crawl under the car.
If you don't have a cracked manifold or a leaky gasket, don't make a
problem
for yourself. The old saying applies here, "If it ain't broke, don't fix
it."

Cecil,
Before I make any comments let me ask you this: Is the rough running
condition constant from cold "start up" through operating temperature, or
does it vary through the warm up cycle.
As for your fuel sender save yourself a lot of hassle throw it the trash
and purchase the "Tankzilla". I have installed many of these units. They
are well built, metal as opposed to plastic, are easy to install, and
perform better than the original.

Just to clarify my comments on this list becoming a daily advertisement

bragging page.
I was on the verge of dropping off the list because I was tired of
hearing
from or about You-Know-Who. But since I value this list very much, and I
didn't want to lose it as a resource, I stated my gripe.
My concern is over postings from businesses or organizations. I have
seen
three very valuable lists die because people began *branding* their
comments. The members got tired of competitive and commercial nature
that
this added, and the lists dried up.
There is a fine line between posting to lists as an organization, and the
standard practice of just putting your organization's name at the end of
the message. When that line is crossed, the list becomes commercialized.
I would have the same concerns if I got daily e-mail from Stephen/DMC
Houston in reply to postings on the list.
Maybe I'm just overly sensitized, but I don't want history to repeat
itself
with this list.
I have always felt that James does an excellent job as moderator.

I don't think that line has been crossed.
Most active members of the DML post some questions, some answers, and
some opinions. Joe and Bob have posted mostly, if not all, answers and
opinions. by having a signature line with their organization, they are
advertising their business, but who cares?!
A year or so ago, when James went on his quest to increase the number of
DML members, I was not happy about it because my past experiences with
other list's is that the potential for information is not valuable
enough to go through the load's of bulls**t, and noise. Well, here we
are with 900+ users (according to the DML web site) and... Well.... I
was wrong.
If a organization, or business is operating in the interest of Delorean
owners (and making a living at it) then I don't see a problem with them
promoting their products and services as it relates to a specific topic
of discussion. James have been doing a great job of filtering the
garbage, and as long as his commitment to the DML continues the
information will remain relevant.
I don't think your concerns are ridiculous, but considering the
circumstances I don't think we have anything to worry about!

Hi Kayo,
You can still get the Goodyear Eagle GT-II tires in both 195X14 & 235x15
from Goodyear. Black wall with black lettering are still available but the
Black wall with white lettering in the 235X15 are hard to find but still
can be found.
In case you want to do a search here is the information you need through
Goodyear:
Front P195/60R14 EAG GT II BSLRP 9 MBT/116-0220599
Rear P235/60R15 EAG GT II 98SERWL MBT/116-731-011
Fronts cost about $80 each, Rear $100 The price includes installation and
balancing.
These are what I got for my D. They are great, I just got home minutes ago
from a trip in the pouring rain. My D was solid as a rock on city streets
and the freeway.

Hello Everyone,
I recently acquired 2 orginal DeLorean sales brochures that the
dealerships
had back in 81. The sales brochures are a black booklet with 8 pages, 2
of
the pages are able to fold out like a small poster.
I sent the 2 brochures to John Z. DeLorean in New Jersey about 10 days
ago
and asked him if he could sign them for me. I
also told him about my all original 81 which I have owned for the last 13
years. I thanked him for building a great car, a car that doesn't seem to
get older. I told him that my car still looks brand new and the body
style
is still very modern. Well, to my happy amazement! , today I received the
brochures back from him. He signed them for me . The first one, he wrote
"To Mark, with
best regards, John Z. DeLorean" the 2nd sales brochure he signed it "To
Mark, best wishes, John Z. DeLorean". Needless to say, I am very happy.
To me, Mr DeLorean is a true American entrepreneur and a man of great
vision.

Hi Cecil,
I just finished fixing the very same problem! The chances are that your
gauge is probably OK, it's the actual sensor that is bad. My research
reveals that many of the originals were defective and need to be replaced.
I chose the TankZilla repair kit.
You can do all the work your self. It's really an easy fix. But before
you
do that check the grounding points for the front end electrical system.
Disassemble them and clean, even if they look OK. I found a good 50% of
apparent electrical problems have been corrosion of contacts, connectors
and grounding points.
In my case the float went all the way to the top of the sensor but the
gauge would read from about 3/4 full to about 1/2 full on a full tank.

A friend found some inertia switches new in the packaging and is
wondering what a reasonable price to ask per piece would be. All are
labeled part # 10927.7 (I have not yet verified this with my manual but

Article in the Newark Star-Ledger (Newark, New Jersey) there was a
article that John DeLorean has again agreed to sell his 434-acre estate
in Bedminster to pay of some debts.
A similar deal fell through last year due to local zoning restrictions
that did not allow him to subdivide (Yes, I am leaving ot details) for
his kids to have a Lifetime Lease on some parts of the property. The
kids will still have the lease, but it will be the new owners problem on
how to subdivide it.
Anyone got a few million?! Talk a about a DeLorean collectible! You
could even let John live there rent free!

Its very typical. Even in new cars, your will see rust starting to
form.
Its just
hard, cast steel. And its nature is to rust. If it really bothers you
that much,
you can use an aluminum paint called POR-20. It works ok and last ok.
If you really want it to look nice, then you can remove the manifolds and
have them "Firecoated". A product know as FIRECOTE, is a ceramic
coating that can be applied to both the outside and inside of the
manifold.
Its said that doing the inside improves performance, but I don't know if
it
really is noticable or not. It looks great and can withstand temps up to
1300 degrees F. I used it on my Bricklin headers and have seen it used
on other cars. The delorean manifolds are really only visible from under
the
car so it never really bothered me all that much that they rust.

Sorry for the inconvenience and thanks for the feedback.
The article did have some significant errors.
The version posted on the Bloomberg site also has
major errors.
The version at http://www.xynext.com/pndc/bloomberg.htm has
been corrected, with the possible exception of one line that I
had to do a little guessing on (my copy is poor). As soon as
I verify the words on the bottom of the last physical page,
(following "with a membership of more than") I can have it
updated in a few minutes.

Can anyone tell me any information about the 'DeLorean Motor Club' in
Las Vegas, NV/Sun Valley, CA? I had them send me their membership
information by signing up on their web site. They sent me a letter
talking about The Cincinnati event (which I didn't think they were
part of), and that they put out a publication 'DeLorean
International'. Their web site doesn't really say anything and I've
not heard a single word about them on the DML.
As a new Delorean owner, I'll join most anything and give it a
chance, but I also don't want to send $40 off into nowhere.

I joined the DeLorean Motor Club almost a year ago. So far I have a card
to
carry in my wallet and a decal to put on my car window to show for my
$40.00. Like you I was hungry for information and was willing to invest
$40.00 to get it. Unfortunately this has not proved to be a good
investment. At least with the D.O.A. I get a pretty good magazine and
some reasonable DeLorean apparel. Fortunately, James and the Zine has
filled the needed void of technical information and contacts while
managing
not to get an "attitude" that some of the D.O.A. people have given the
marque. Maybe we will get a marriage of D.M.C. and the Zine ? The
Cincinnati show illustrates the desire for "social" functions for D.O.A.
members other than the West coast or a new club to fit our needs!
I
still would like one of the clubs to address insurance as do most other
marque clubs.

You may, however, still have a chance to see the animated "D" on the

I really haven't tried too hard to market my '83. It has 32K miles, no
dent
or dings, steel braided clutch line, steel overflow container, metal
radiator ( Grady installed) new clutch, new brakes - tires good - cared
for,
since purchase in '84, like a baby.
Asking 17,500 ( slightly negotiable ) comes with both manuals ( both
originals) + some spare parts.
Everything works quite well.
I'm just not enjoying this toy as much as some of my others - different
age
different stage - you know.
