The "My Classic Car" featuring Lincoln Nation's DeLorean talk should be
this weekend.  Look for it on TNN,  Sunday, May 10th at 2:30 Eastern
Time.

The "Simpsons" episode featuring an animated DeLorean should be
shown in most markets Wednesday, May 27, 1998.  Since this is a
sydicated re-run, you must check local listings for time.

Hey y'all...  I was just wondering if anyone out there
knew if the handbrake lever in our Deloreans was
also used in another car? (Looks very close to a
VW handbrake)..

The reason I ask is because the rubber boot looks really
tacky at the base where it is just "floating", and I've
seen some really nice leather VW boots...

Thanks!!

I don't know any details, but in talking to some of the guys at the show
over
last weekend, this is NOT recommended. I suggest getting the
re-manufactured
lowered springs from DMC Houston (but that's from talking to the guy who
sells
them :-)

Incidentally, I saw a VERY impressive demonstration at the show of a
product
called Activ-8. It's an oil additive in the same market as slick 50, but
works
MUCH better (it was in the demo) Anyone use it?

I use a Ken-Tool #39730 MacPherson Strut Compressor. I finally bought
this one after renting it more than enough times to pay for it. Available
at NAPA for about $57. I tried a 3-piece external spring compressor
(no-name rental)  and about killed myself. This one is a nice design,
2-piece, and fit very well on the DMC. As you have noticed, there isn't a
lot of rrom to work in the front because the frame covers up a lot of the
spring. Another nice thing is that it will work on most modern cars with
Struts as well.

Is there a listing of movies where the D's appear yet?

Hi Dave,
We have been doing research on crossover parts since 1984, I do not know
of
any other application for the DeLorean hand brake. The base of the rubber
boot in question is designed to fit snugly in side the crescent shaped
trim
cover, for unknown reasons in many cars the boot seems a little short, to
correct for that problem do whatever is necessary to raise the height of
the trim cover to be sure that the boot does not slip out.

Subject: DML: Exhaust manifold rebuild

I have noticed some activity about the exhaust manifold rebuild being
talked about.  I too have been looking into this job.  I have been
spraying
all the post with liquid wrench for the last two weeks and to help I
removed the hot air intake stove.  Anyway I noticed I have  two posts
missing on the right manifold.  My question is this.  There are two unused
holes per cylinder that are tapped but have no posts.  The existing
manifold does not makes use of these holes.  Can I get a manifold that can
make use of these tapped holes or am I stuck with having to do the
machining ( big big bitch of a job as you could imagine )?  Also the
existing posts are not in the best of shape.  How do you remove the
posts?
One last question.  The condition of the exhaust manifolds are typical of
a
car this age (rusty). When I replace them I would like to make them
better.
You know so they wont rust.  Is there a better manifold I could install
or
can you chrome them or something?  Thanks Jim.

G'day all,
Today my folks and I went to see the DeLorean that was at the
Motor
Museum in Harris St. (neer Darling Harbour, Sydney). The guy that works
there told me that it was a factory-original Right-Hand Drive. It seems to
be in pretty good condition (except for a few minor scratches and finger
prints all over it), and I noticed that the hood had the "De Lorean"
emblem
on it. It is a privately owned car, and the guy told me that the owner was
thinking about selling it (so naturally we asked the guy to get the owner
to
call us). So, if you're in Darling Harbour, I suggest you go see it. They
also had a Lambourghini there, but besides that and a few Jaguars and
Porsches most of the other cars are 40s, 50s and 60s type cars.

I was cleaning the underside of my DeLorean's engine and the surrounding

yesterday. Some really gross crud can build up in the nooks and crannies

the years! Anyway, I found a serial number on my frame. It is facing the
engine,
directly above the catalytic converter. It has 003363 stamped in one or
two inch
tall digits. What's funny is that is not my VIN, but it is close. (my vin
is
3868) Is this number independent of the VIN or are they supposed to be
the same?

My car has no evidence of being reassembled in some way. But then again,
I'm not
the original owner, and the previous owner could have done an impeccable
job I
suppose.

I ran across a list while at the dmc (Houston) warehouse last November in
Columbus. It showed all the VIN's, their corresponding frame numbers,
engine numbers transmission type and interior color. The only thing that
it did NOT show was the build month and year. Frame numbers did NOT
correspond with the VIN, and there seemed to be no correlation between
the frame, engine and VIN's. The list was incomplete, though it did cover
most all the 81's and some of the 82's. I imagine that as the factory was
put into receivership, recordkeeping of that sort became more sporadic.

Maybe in the future Stephen will publish this list?

Subject: DML: Springs & Belts

To All:

There have been many threads about lowering the D and springs.

I haven't seen much in the way of information from DML members about the
actual work, so this may be of interest.

I for one like the look of any car that has an even space around the tire,
and for that reason decided to lower the front end only. I had two reason
for just doing the front and not front and back. First the space around
the
rear tires is already even and second I did not want to loose any more
ground clearance than I had to.

Changing the springs in the front end is quite a job and requires using
the
right tools. For any one who is considering doing it then selves, be sure
you use a spring compressor that will fit in the restricted space in the
front end. It took me a full day to do both right and left. NOTE: the
front
end alignment will change with the new shorter springs, you will have to
realign the front end, do it with a full gas tank! Now the space is even
on
both front and rear tires, and my D has that sleek nose down "Look".
Given
the choice, if I ever have the need to change "Springs" again I am going
to
have a shop do it! I should also point out that all the nuts and bolts
need
to be soaked in penetrating oil before hand and then cleaned before the
work starts, to avoid busted bolts and knuckles.

One of the most irritating things about the D I have found is the seat
belts. for some reason the shoulder strap cuts into the side of my neck,
and every time I do the left side glance to clear the left lane before
doing a lane change I get the belt against my face! I decided to pull out
the factory installed seat belts in favor of "real" shoulder and lap
harness. I selected the "Schroth Profi-II" which is used widely in many
race cars. They are both  SFI and FISA approved and street legal. They
come
in 3 colors, Red, Yellow and Black. I got Black. The lap Belts (3") are
bolted in using the OEM points of the D, while the shoulder belts are
installed behind the seat using eye bolts in shear. The Profi-II is a 5
point system with Twist quick release. The two shoulder belts (3") are
held
in place by a set of Loops secured by vell-crow (sic) over the seat
shoulders. The installation is very easy and looks impressive with the
shoulder pads hiding the ugly bright yellow product name.

The harness system is very comfortable and easy to hook up and release. It
feels much more secure than the OEM system. There is no problem reaching
the instruments, CD-player etc. Any comments about the D seat belts system
are welcome! And yes I had a police safety check, They were more
interested
in the D than the Installation of the Harness system. In California it is
against the Law to modify any car's OEM seat belt system or fail to use
it,
However it is legal to replace it with an approved alternative.

And Yes they are expensive! as seat belts (harness) go.

If "Delorean Services" provides useful tips to the list users, I would
like to see them continue with there comments and suggestions.  I have
never met Joe or Bob but I suspect that they are dedicated owners and
are promoting the marque.  I do not know if they actually have a
commercial interest in DeLoreans.  I have not been able to determine
that from there posts.

I pose this question, would people object if know "experts" such as
Steve Wynne or Rob Grady were frequent contributors.  I know that I
would not object to any help or suggestions, even if they suggested the
custom parts that they manufacture for our cars.  Any info that I get
from the list is always appreciated by me and my wife.  My wife likes it
because it saves us money and I like it because I have not ever had to
send my car to a shop for service.  I shudder at the thought of some
cretin screwing around with my DeLorean.

Unfortunately, I live +400 miles from the nearest DeLorean dedicated
service center, so it looks like me and my fellow list members are going
to have to maintain #2981.

James, keep up the good work with the list, and I hope that Joe/Bob keep
sending in there comments.

Can someone please describe the proper way to remove and re-attatch the
lower door trim?  I managed to muscle the trim off (I removed one of the
impossible-to-reach pull-handle screws, and pulled the trim off with the
handle still screwed in on the other side), but now I see no way to get it
back on.  The pull-handle and the bracket just won't line up.  I put it
back
on, but one side of the pull-handle just loosely flops around.  If I
didn't
expect to take the trim off again any time soon, I'd just glue it in
place,
but I'd like an alternative to defacing my car.  God, why couldn't those
screws have just been exposed?

Thanks!
