Subject: Re: DML: CB Antenna

To All,

I will reply before everyone starts to swarm me, with questions on
antennas,
selection and installation.

First question, is how serious do you need your equipment to be operating?

If you have a very, very GOOD CB radio, you will need a very, very GOOD
antenna.

On a Delorean, this is a very hard task to do.  No mounting area
available for
proper grounding, this is for the PROPAGATIONS of the radio waves.  Your
car
metallic chassis should act as part of this antenna system.  If you must,
mount a very good antenna, you must be conjured up a bracket or some other
device to hold it   This is due to the vehicles problems of not
destroying the
body and it's componets  There is no available "good" place to mount,
without
encountering some type of physical or interferring workings of the
antenna.

A good antenna if you should mount permanetly, should be a very, very
good one
and be "worth" the holes that you are going to make or create!  Antenna
such
as a
K-40.   I live in NYC.  All the yellow cabs that has CB radios, have a
K-40
antenna installed.   My consensus is, did they have a "sell" on them?  NO
the
real reason is they are one of the best, if not a better antenna
available.

Now, ANY antenna will tip off a thief.  The on and off removal of an
antenna
is a chore   to stop thieves from ripping you off and vandalism.   There
are
two solutions that are left without ALTERATING the vehicle.  Researching
the
options, TWO units as antennas where available.  First, a electronic
device
that split the use from your "existing" antenna and on to this device your
original and the CB radio will both be plug into this electronic box.
This
unit is very small and can be install and hidden anywhere without a big
"ado".
This device is "fair" in performance and a poor compromise on its ability
to
capture or send out your radio wave with the CB radio.  It also interferes
many times with the regular radio; "splash over".

Last option, is a recent manufactured antenna device. This device is an
antenna that looks and mounts the same way as a cellular phone "glass
mount
type" antenna.  It can be remove with very little or no trace at all.  The
only problem is to mount the antenna.   Where on the glass of the vehicle?
Too much work for installation, and too low for the CB antenna to do its
job
on the rear glass quarter panels.  Too ugly on the vehicle.  Rear
window???
Killed everytime you would open the sunshade.  Door window?  Forget about
it.
Last, the front windshield?  Yes.

Since I have a portable cellular phone that comes with optional car
booster
unit to boost the 0.8 watt hand unit to a full 4 watt unit.  That also
enables
me to operate it "hands free".  It too, needs a glass mounting type
antenna to
be mounted.  So now I have two antennas to mount.  Front windshield, both
of
them.

These unit's antenna was replace with a company that manufactures antennas
just for the "looks" of uniformity.  The CB antenna is 16" long and the
cellular phone antenna is about 10" long.  They were mounted side by side
with
3" space between them on the highest point and centered it on the front
windshield.  This gives it a typical antenna look that is mounted on a
European car.

The only problem you have in such installation is that you must get 1/4"
"U"
channel rubber to run along the front of both doors.  One for each
antenna in
my case.  These channels are to be glue on to the perimeter door's rubber
seal
with industrial type of krazy glue (don't have Loctite's product number on
hand).  These channels starts at the level of the door light switches or
knee
pad level, winding along the perimeter of the door's rubber seal and
ending on
the top of the windshield's vertical side only. Do not go across
horizontal.
This is to give a "seat" and to hold the antenna's cable in place. Start
the
cable installation at glass side at the antenna's base, and working the
cable
on the windshield horizontally between the glass and rubber.  At the end
of
horizontal run, work the cable between the headliner and the vinyl
material at
he vertical post, then bring the cable around and onto the rubber
channel. The
cable fits in the channel and stays in place. A little industrial crazy
glue
at certain area will hold the cable from moving or falling out.  Then
connect
antenna cable end into the unit.  The installation, if done properly, it
will
look good and does not interfere in the open or closing of the doors.  If
you
look very hard, you may notice it.

Rubber channel cost is  $0.90 per foot.  You need 7 feet of rubber
channel at
$5.40

Incidentlly, for a CB unit I am using a Cobra hand held remote unit,
$85.00.
All the operating features, speakers and microphone are on the hand unit.
Small and can be tuck away under or between seats.  Big CB units are a
pain to
remove in and out of the vehicle, they are still a better unit then the
hand
held units.  I like to listen CB to know what is going on when I am
traveling
across the country, otherwise it is stereo or radio will be on.  Like I
said
earlier, all this is a compromise for the situation that is presented.  In
other words, it is about the best you can get, 80% performance, for a non
destructive installation.

The cellular phone antenna is installed and connected the same way.  To
mount
the cellular phone units, I had to fabricate a"saddle" for the units to
mount
on without  destroying the interior.  This "saddle" sits on the console
between the seats.

We will leave this area to an another time.

I am in the market for a K&N air filter, and I need to get the make and

that isn't specific enough (There is a 740 GLE a 660 GLE and a 940 GLE )
Does anyone know which GLE it is, or any other car that has our wonderless

Also - has anyone used SplitFire plugs and/or wires in a D?  (are there
better ones?)  Just trying to squeeze as much HP as possible without a

I think that this has come up beofre and a K&N filter is not avialble. I
read in the DOC (UK) newsletter that someone was rigging up a new airbox
that would accept one. Anyone know anything about this or want to tackle
it?

Subject: DML: Stainless Steel Illusion - 2nd Edition

I am in negotiations with the author and former publisher of the book
Stainless Steel Illusion trying to get another run of the books printed.
There would be two versions printed:

1) Complete book as it now exists, only in softcover. Same 160 pages, all
the photos and color. Price, including shipping in the US, would be about
$35.

2) Same as above, but a "limited" run of 300 hardcover books, numbered
and signed by the author, and possibly by JZD himself. Price, including
shipping in the US, would be about $100.

This requires a SIGNIFICANT cash outlay (printing, reprint rights, etc)
and I am wondering what kind of market there is for this. We all know
that SSI is the BEST book about the DeLorean, and it currently sells in
the $200-$250 range.

The idea behind this would not be to make a killing, but simply get the
books in the hands of the people who want them without paying the $200.
Tell me if you would buy one or the other (or both) of these as described
above, please email me ASAP. Thanks.

Lee is so right that I cannot emphasize it enough!

A few weeks after I first acquired my DeLorean my driver's side trailing
arm bolt sheared off while the car was moving.  Fortunately it happened
as I was turning out of my driveway, so I was not going fast enough to
cause an accident.  The right rear wheel immediately slipped back and
started rubbing against the stainless on the edge of the wheel well. This
made the car very difficult to steer because one rear wheel was pointed
the wrong direction.  It also damaged the tire.  I turned around with
great
difficulty and pulled back into my driveway, but the whole time I was on
the road I was a hazard.

For a few minutes I thought my frame might have cracked, but I called
John Truscott at the DOA and he diagnosed a failed trailing arm bolt
within about ten seconds.

Two points:

My car is #1280, an early 81 which had the weak bolts Lee mentioned.
Let me reemphasize that my bolt WAS NOT LOOSE (another possible
failure mode) it actually sheered off in brittle failure.  Early cars
which still
have those brittle bolts might be prone to the same failure.  The stronger
bolts are not expensive and I hope most have been replaced by now.

My bolt broke while accelerating into a turn, possibly the greatest stress
the trailing arm bolts ever receive.  Unfortunately, this is also the
worst
situation to have a trailing arm bolt fail!  If I had been accelerating
and
turning into freeway traffic I would certainly have lost control.  Could
any
track experienced driver post tips on what to do in a situation like this
(that is, one of your rear wheels breaks loose and starts pointing in
different directions)?

Folks,

Just took the liberty to call K&N Filter Engineering, the manufacture.  I
spoke to a man name John,  and he told me no such filter under all the
"crossover" numbers that I read out to him.

I though between the time eveyone requested back then, up to today, maybe
they
might have produced one?  Guess what?  Still a fat NO.  So there it is.
Mr.
Espey and everyone are right.  NO SUCH THING (yet).  Anyone want to take
the
time to press the K&N company to run a for us batch???

Maybe the Delorean Owners Association Products, Delorean One, PJ Grady,
Delorean Motor Company, Delorean Motor Center, Bauerle Automotive or any
other
establishment or person who may have the time and the financial ability to
invest would like to undertake this project.  Money to be money on its

Subject: DML: DMC from TN. and antenna problem solved

Fellow DMCer's,
The DMC that Brandon wrote about was an 81 automatic, gray inter. It's
first
owner was Jim Varney ("you know what I mean Vern" ) guy. He sold it to the
second owner in Gallatin, TN. It was NOT one of the prototypes. It had
been
sitting for about 4 to 5 years. I'll let Brandon take it from
here.................
The prototype as I remember was some where in Virginia.
I too had a problem with my antenna (radio). The mast had broken off at
the
car level. I took out the old one and replaced it with a small black
rubber
one from Auto Zone. No it doesn't go up and down but it looks good on the
car.
Total cost was $8 and about 20 min of my time. I taped up the electrical
wires
on the original unit so if I ever want to install an electrical unit I
can .

1) If it has half of the antenna on one side of the glass and half on the
other, you are probably putting out about half the power you could be if
you changed even to a cheap coil-loaded magmount.
2) That antenna is probably grounded by the CB's power source (example:
cigarette lighter plug - a poor way of doing so but it works).
3) If you can properly ground both radio (wiring it into car, not lighter
plug or batteries) and antenna (ground plane on metal surface with
contact or grounding wires), you will increase the output power and
overall RX/TX quality while using your CB. To learn more about antenna
theory, ask a local CB shop or email me privately.
4) The best antenna a car could hope for is a 1/4 wavelength, which would
be a 108 inch stainless steel whip. Not always practical, but the best.

Subject: DML: Is your Delorean for keeps?

There has been a lot of concern recently and in the past about keeping
everything "OEM" (headliner fabric, radio, carpet, fascia/wheel paint, CB
antennas, etc.), and I was wondering "why?".

There are some great things about these cars, but I wouldn't consider any
of
these things to be one of them.  I understand that some folks want to keep
everything stock, but for what reason?  I could see it if someone had a
large collection of cars that just sat around (a-la Jay Leno), but most of
us use our cars.  Obviously someone wouldn't be driving around in
something
they are trying to keep "mint".

I'm not saying you're "wrong" to want to keep things OEM, but I'd like to
get some feedback.  Is it because you're planning on selling it one day?
Most folks that post here seem to be in my situation, where selling isn't
even an issue.  And if one were to sell, is it always the case that
someone
would only want it if it was perfectly stock? Wouldn't it demand a higher
price if there were improvements to an aging design (stereo, interior,
engine, etc.)? I know if I were in the market again, and I was looking at
two identical cars, but one had a better stereo, I would consider the car
with a better stereo to be worth more.  These are all subjective things I
guess, "beauty is in the eye of the beholder...", but it can't be that
people strive to find an identical headliner fabric because they are in
love
with the OEM.. <g>

OK, THERE AS MANY OPINIONS ABOUT ANTENNAS AS THERE ARE DAYS OF THE
YEAR...
OPTION ONE A THRU THE GLASS ANTENNA IS GOOD AND ABOUT $60. AND CAN BE
REMOVED AND RE-MOUNTED. AVAILABLE FROM ANTENNA SPECIALISTS OR LARSON.
OPTION 2 BUILD A BRACKET ON THE REAR LOUVER AREA THAT HINGES LIKE THE
LUGGAGE RACK BRACKETS THAT WERE AVAILABLE.
OPTION 3 BUILD A GROUND PLANE OUT OF METAL AND MOUNT IT ON THE ENGINE
COVER AND STICK THE ANTENNA UP BETWEEN THE LOUVERS.
ALL THREE CAN BE TEMP OR LEFT ON.
I HAVE USED ALL OF THE ABOVE ON MY CAR AND OR A COUPLE OF OTHERS...

It's there, just behind the center of the engine, even lower than the
distributor cap. A hint if you want a little more room to climb up and
see it is to remove the engine cover. It's only 6 screws, and makes a
world of difference in access to Things At The Back of the Engine.

[Last updated on: Tue Apr 14 14:32:20 EST 1998]

Hello and welcome to the mailing list.  I am James Espey
<moderator@xxxxxxxxxxx>, and I maintain the DeLorean Mailing List.
The list currently has about 1000 subscribers.

This list is not affiliated in any way with any club or parts/service
facility.

Postings to the DELOREAN MAILING LIST are the opinions of the author and
not necessarily those of the list moderator (James Espey) or his Internet
Service Provider(s). The list moderator makes every effort to screen out
false, misleading, and negative postings, but it is up to you, the reader
of the DELOREAN MAILING LIST, to realize that nothing should be taken as
actual fact without research and investigation of your own.

Please read this entire introduction and then save it so that you
may refer to it in the future if you need.

This list is a moderated discussion of the DeLorean automobile,
company and man.

There is an archive of the messages to this list available on
the World Wide Web at the URL:

   http://www.dmcnews.com

I send this generic introduction out to everyone who requests to
be on the list as sort of a greeting.  Feel free to start a topic
of your choice:  talk about your new DeLorean, post an anecdote about
your old DeLorean, discuss a repair you just made or would like to
make, etc.  The list is moderated, so send everything for the list to:

        dmcnews@xxxxxxxxxxxxx

Before you post to the mailing list, keep in mind that many people
will be reading what you write.  The administrative address for the
DeLorean Mailing List is:

        MajorDomo@xxxxxxxxxxxxx

Please use the administrative address for administrative messages
(removal from list, change of address, etc.,).  Please do NOT send
administrative messages to the postings address, as the rest of the
list recipients probably aren't interested in your request to be
removed/changed, etc!  DO NOT SEND THESE REQUESTS TO THE POSTINGS
ADDRESS!  This is one of the worst things a person can do.  Please
don't do it.

The Majordomo List Software supports a number of commands; of chief
importance are:

     subscribe <list> <address>
     unsubscribe <list> <address>
     help

The second worst thing you can do is to include the entire digest or
posting to which you are replying inside of your mail message when
you are posting.  If you are going to include something, only include
what is relevant to your posting. Including the whole message not only
increases the size of the next digest , but it is very annoying. PLEASE
exercise judicious use of the (SNIP) feature.

Do not forge mail to the mailing list.  If I find that you've done
this, you will be permanently removed from the list.  In addition, I
will inform your site administrator(s).

Also, do not send images, sounds, or anything else of large size
to the mailing list without first contacting me at the administrative
address.  When you post, only use regular ascii text.  Please don't
send your messages in MIME or any other format as some subscribers
may not be able to read it and it may also mess up the digest.

If your mailbox has a limit on the number of messages that can
be delivered to your mailbox, please consider using the digest and in
either case, check your mailbox frequently.  I WILL unsubscribe people
who bounce list messages due to full mailboxes.

Please preface the subject line of any posting to the list with the
  following keywords:

[long]        Any posting that is lengthy.
[humor]       Self explanatory -- and, please, not too many of these
                posts and DeLorean related!
[none]        Not DeLorean related. Very few of these will get posted.

I reserve the following label(s) for myself (and will be unhappy if
  anyone else uses them ...)

[admin]       This label will be used for information I deem important
for all subscribers to read.  I use it sparingly.

If you have any other keyword to suggest, please send it to me
(moderator@xxxxxxxxxxx) for consideration.

As ever, I welcome discussion of how the list is run.  I do ask that you
direct such commentary to "moderator@xxxxxxxxxxx".  I will consider
anything you have to say.  I don't promise an immediate response (work
may often preclude that ...), but I will respond as quickly as I can.

Thank you!

My magnetic mount has no DC connection from the antenna to the magnetic
base plate.  Auto paint is an excellent insulator, especially that with a
clearcoat, so it would be insulated anyway unless you scraped the paint
off.  It may be capacitavely coupled but I didn't check that.  I used to
check the standing wave ratio and tune the whip to the frequency which I
used the most but found that it didn't make enough difference to pay.  CB
sets have cast iron output transistors and are make for people like me who
have hooked them up to nearly everything including a window screen for an
antenna and have yet to FRY one or hear of anyone who has.  After all, we
are only working with a max of four watts.  No question, a properly
designed
and tuned antenna will transmit the full power of the design of the set,
but
you will still get line of sight communication with a coat hanger.

I would have to agree on this point.  I see no problems with
modifying a DeLorean.  Oddly enough there are cars that I think should
be kept original, a 1963 Studebaker Avanti is one of them.  I think one
of
the reasons more people don't object to modifying the DeLorean is
because its feeling of being a grand experiment in automotive history.
Like the guy who built the "1998" DeLorean, many of us wonder what
changes/improvements  would have been done if DMC inc., was still
around today.  I'm willing to bet that most (not all) of the people on
the
list have modified their DeLoreans in some way whether it be a Fanzilla,
Turbo kit, larger radiator, spoilers, 3rd tail light, or all the way to
the
"1998" DeLorean.

The problem, when it comes to resale, is that what you feel is
an esthetic improvement, like a spoiler or painting the car, I may think
seriously detracts from the appearance.  While most of us can agree on
what a mechanical improvement is, most of us will not on aesthetic
improvements.  Just think about all the cars on the road that you see and
wonder what the owner was thinking.  My personal peeves are gold trim,
axle-extensions (skateboarding), and lowered pickups.
