Yesterday, March 21st, 1998, the Alabama owners, 3 of us, met again in
Greenville Alabama for lunch, conversation and comparing
troubleshooting experieinces. We even had two out of state guests who
drove about six hours just to talk with us about our cars. Steve Rice
and his mother, Mary drove all the way from New Orleans. Steve, who
just turned sixteen (Happy Birthday Steve) has been studying DeLoreans
for quit some time and his primary goal is to become a DeLorean owner.
It is really refreshing to meet some one like steve who is so
enthusiastic about DeLoreans. Steve was full of questions and actually
quit knowledgable about the cars.
When Duke and I pulled into the parking lot, Steve had a look of
amazement on his face, without hesitation, he came up and ask, are you
Scott, the guy that invited me to your get together? I was amazed that
he recognized me, since we had never met. I asked him how he knew it
was me, and Steve deadpanned, it was your car.
The high light of the day was when Bill Burden ask steve if he ever had
rode in a DeLorean, Steve answered no. You should have seen the look on
Steves face when Bill tossed him the keys and said lets go for a drive.
Minutes:
Bill quoted the minutes from our previous meeting, "we had lunch and
talked about our cars."

us, come on down. We are an informal group, no structure to our
meetings, no agenda, no dues, just a good time.

Problem: Engine will not idle
When I try to turn down the idle adjustment screw the engine dies. It
will only idle above 1200 RPM. The engine runs ruff and appears to have
a miss. Distributer cap and rotor look clean on inside, all new wires.
Car has never run well since I got it in November. New full pump and
filter. Gas tank cleaned and wiped out before installing fuel pump.
Setting idle micro-switch kills the engine. When engine is running, it
runs rich. To start the car I must have the accelerator partially
depressed(25-30%) is this normal? I don't have any experience with fuel
injectors, could this be dirty fuel injectors. Can they be cleaned or
must they be replaced?

I had to replace my headlights so that I would pass inspection. Part
numbers for those interested are:
Low beam: Sylvania H4656
High beam: Sylvania H4651
They fit perfect+ADs- no fuss, no muss.
(I thought those looked a lot like the ones on my Scirocco . . . )
My automatic transmission is losing its mind. Without a change in load or
gas pedal the thing decides to shift from 3rd to 2nd at 70MPH. Yeah,
yeah,
replace the governor. I'm currently in the process of trying to convince
myself that it could be a bad shift solenoid or multiple switch mechanism.
I say this because I had no problem in 400 miles before when weather was
good. Now it's wet and the thing does this. Putting the tranny in the 2
position works+ADs- it stays in 1st or 2nd. It also never shifts from
3rd to
1st unexpectedly and for that I thank it. The 1 position seemed to work
before, but now the car sometimes stays in 2nd without downshifting.
Maybe
I'll have the car exorcised.
I'll let you know what happens after the forty days and nights of rain /
snow / sleet are over.

This coming June, Dick Ryan (raddad) will celebrate his 65th birthday by
joining with 1000 cyclists to pedal from Seattle Washington to Washington
DC.
on behalf of the American Lung Association. The 45 day ride will cover
3000
miles and the riders will attempt to raise $8 million dollars for the
nation's
oldest and largest voluntary health organization.
As part of his entry requirement, Dick has committed to raise $10,000.00
in
pledges for the American Lung Assoc.. That's no small task when you
combine
it with buying a state-of-the-Art bicycle, and training hard even though
he is up to his handle bars in snow.
He's not one to toot his own horn, and I only found out about this 'ride'
because we have an ongoing discussion about turbos and superchargers
"amongst ourselves". So I thought that I would take it upon myself to
spread the word on his behalf.
Here's where you all come in.
If you would like to help celebrate his cause by pledging a few bucks to
the
A.L.Assoc. in his name, it would represent a wonderful gesture to him on
behalf of all of all of us 'D' freaks. Think of it as a small "thank

According to the owners manual you SHOULD do this - but it doesn't say
whether the car will start WITHOUT doing it.

Yes there was a guy in Denver, Colorado that produced the arms and also
a very nice machnied coolant tank. He machined them from aluminum, and
said it would inprove the handeling of the D. He also owned a nice
Delorean himself. Although I never purchased his products, they
appeared to be very well made. I think his name was George Nacheim
(sp?) I needed I can try to track him down.

Association is still around. I recently purchased the complete set of
back issues and feel that they are worth every penny. Check out the web
site, they may still be offering a special price which includes a one

David, When I took my car out of storage (10 years), I did as you did,
cleanned the fuel tank, replaced pump and filter. I also removed all of
the injectors and soaked them in penetrating oil. Then, I put all of
the injectors in an ultrasonic cleanning tank for a couple of days.
The manual tells you to depress the accelerator pedal 1/8 when starting
the car. Mine will start most of the time without touching the gas
peddle.
Another thing I did, was removed the needle/spring from the side of the
fuel distributor. There is a rubber tip on the end of the needle which
in my case was stuck. I use needle nose plyers to remove it. I then
used penetrating oil/spray to clean the fuel distributor. I believe
that this needle/plunger is a pressure regulator. MAKE SURE YOU COUNT
THE NUMBER OF TURNS ON THIS NEEDLE WHEN YOU REMOVE IT. What I did, was
put a screw driver in the end of the needle, then loosen the large lock
nut. Once the nut is loose, count the number of turns required to
remove the needle. If you do not get it back in the correct position,
you will change the pressure setting. I used new copper washers when I
put the fuel injection system back together.
My car ran rough, intermitently. So I put a bottle of Chevron Techron
cleanner along with a fresh tank of premium and took the car out and
drove it. I found that by putting some miles on it, good hard freeway
miles, lots of 3 & 4th gear to keep the revs up, the engine smoothed
out. Running that "cleanner" richened fuel through it seemed to do the
trick.

In the engine compartment, on the passenger's side, at the back of the =
inlet manifold you'll see a red wire about 1 inch in length. It has a =
small connector to should be connected to another wire going on down the =
engine compartment.. Make sure this wire is plugged in. Without this =
wire connected firmly, the engine will run like it has a bad plug or =
plug wires. =20

Yeah, I had lots of fun Scott. I had the pictures developed and i've
been showin them to everyone at school. Some people even thought i was an
owner. I heard one guy talkin about how expensive the cars are. He was
sayin there costs ranged from the $80,000's to the millions. It was

funny to hear unexperienced people talk about the car. Well anyway,
thanks
for the meeting. It was lots of fun.
Now my mom was me to goto the Cincinnati (did i spell it right?) show.
I dont really feel like the drive or spending the money to fly out there

its a possibility.
My greatest thanks goes out to Bill for showin up and lettin me drive

I have owned my car (#1049) for almost 3 years now. Every year I have
had the car shipped to DMC-Houston by a company called Passport
Transport. I can recommend them very highly. The cost from Kansas City
to Houston is around $500 one way. It may sound a little high but
between the cost of airfare, hotel and other misc. expenses not to
mention the expense of my personal time it is worth it (but only to me;
your personal situation may be different).
Passport Transport uses fully enclosed haulers. After they pick up car
it usually arrives in Houston within 48 hours. I have used them 2 times
and am about to have the car picked up again.
I am not saying they are the best but I am a satisfied customer and I do
trust them with my car.

to the guy, he said only 2 other people were going. He said this NJ
DeLorean club has been around for many years He was going to send me all

First off let me thank everyone for their order and let me apologize. I

had several inquiries as to the status and background of the DMC tie
tack/hat
pins I advertised earlier. I hope to clear any confusion and answer all
your
questions.
I have been obsessed with the Delorean automobile every since 1981 (
before
Hollywood made them stars ) when I first saw one at an Oldsmobile Dealer
in
Montana. Wanting to do everything possible to preserve and educate people
about this automobile I decided to create my own line of memorabilia
produced
locally. ( I also service and show local DeLoreans, including mine, when I
find the time.) Anyway, now I have contracted with a small local company
to
produce Delorean merchandise.
The first item is of course the pins. Now let me explain how I do
business.
Many of you have asked why you haven't received your pins. Unfortunately
the
first pins created by this small company were not to my standards. I
refuse to
associate my name with inferior products and I will not take advantage of
anyone. This is why your banks are telling you that your checks haven't
been
cashed. No checks or money orders will be cashed until your order has been
shipped to you. Rest assured you *will* receive your orders. Your
business is
appreciated and I will make it up to you by offering all customers a
substantial discount on future orders.
Now, for those interested here is a list of current and future items I
would
like to offer to owners and enthusiasts.

I have a 1981 DeLorean, #vin 1746
The car starts fine, the first time you start it, but after that you
have to
pump the gas to start it. It does not matter if it is cold or hot out
side.
People have told me to use engan cleaner, I have, but it seems to work
at first but after 2nd, or 3rd time you start it it has the same
problem. Does the fuel pump need to be fixed, or should I change
fuses?
I talk to a guy that had three D's, and he said the first thing he did
was change the fuses. How much money will that be for a new fuel pump
and fuses.
The guy said that DeLorean One make fuses kit and a fuel pump.
It sounded easy to put in a new fuel pump and fuses. I know my dad will
help me, but I need know how much it will be and the number to Delorean
One, or netsite.

...your problem sounds a lot like that
I have with my car. My car kicks in the
neutral gear by no sense at normal driving
(60mph). The only way to get the power
on the road again is to shut down the
engine for a 10 second rest and start it
again (even works when driving !).
Cleaning the filter and filling up the
system to the desired level helped for
a short time and then the problems started
again. Now the transmission don't want
to use the 2.nd gear even when I switch
in "2", only uses 1.st and 3.rd. No
kickdown.
I will check all the maintainable parts
as described in the workshop-manual as
soon as the weather gets warmer (it's
still winter here in Europe).
++ I bought a set af headlights at a
junkyard for about 60 $ as the are
commonly used for VW-Golf-GTI with changed
front-facia here in Austria/Germany.

First of all I would like to thank you for all the information, hints and
tips I got from you by reading the backissues as an anounymus user !
Now that I have my own equipment to get to the internet, I want to step
into the light and participate to the list as an active member.
Over here in Europe I do have much other problems concerning parts
sources than you have in USA. On the other hand some things of european
origin are much easier for me to get (even from junkyards). Maybe we
can build up a "used parts link" over the ocean ?
My car is VIN #2219, automatic, in bad (hopefully soon in better)
condition. Especially the automatic transmission drives me nuts. Since
last week I own a workshop-manual (mutch thanks for the link to the
GB-source in the backissues!) that helps a lot in understanding and
repair.
Two things I would like:
- - get in contact with the previous USA owner of my car
(I bought it 2nd hand in Germany and so I don't know
anything about the previous owners)
-> can somebody help ?
- - get in contact with other DMC owners nearer to my
homecountry than USA is (e.g. Germany, are there
any other Austrians ?)

Hey List,
I have been having problems with my starter. This is what
happened...When I
got the fuel injectors hooked up on my car, and I turned the key the car
started right up. It did this for the first 3 times that night. Then
later
that night when I turned the key my dad said that he saw a big spark
comming
from the starter, so we took it out and hooked it up directly to a
battery and
it started perfectly, so when I put it back in the car and I hooked up
the Red
positive wire and the other big wire to the screw on the starter solenoid
and
hooked up the White-Red wire and the Blue-Yellow wire the starter didn't
work. I called up USA DMC and Steve told me that I had the problem that
DMC
had back in 82 and to do the Starter Solenoid Modification and the problem
should be solved, it wasn't. I then called him up again to see if he
had any
other suggestions, he told me to hook up a test light to the White-Red
wire
and then have someone turn the ignition and see if that wire was getting
any
power, it was getting power. SO I then did the same thing for the
Blue-Yellow
wire and nothing happened. I then looked in the "DeLorean Workshop
Manual" I
got from PJ's and i saw the wiring diagram and found out that the
Blue-Yellow
wire "Feeds Starter Motor Solenoid when Starting" it also says that the
Blue-
Yellow wire comes from the ignition resistor so I was going to track down
the
wire and see if the wire was burned or something but I don't know where
the
Ignition Resistor is. Does anyone have any suggestions to this problem or
know where that resistor is?? Thanks in advance.

Hi DML'ers,
After six months of lurking, I finally became an owner. Several
months ago, I found a car locally that had been neglected for a
number of years. Well, it took several months, but I finally
convinced the owner that it was time to part with her car. It is
#2926 - an '81 with back interior, automatic transmission,
indentations on the hood, locking gas cap, but no filler door. The
car has sat out in the weather for so long that the interior is in
bad shape. However, being a Delorean, the exterior was almost
perfect, with just a fading problem on the front and rear caps. It
hasn't run in several years but is completely stock. I hooked up a
fresh battery and made sure it would turn over - didn't want a car
with a frozen/seized engine. I did not try to start it, since I
intend to completely flush all fluids and drain the gas before I even
attempt to start the engine. For all I know, the engine and
transmission may be bad, but the car only has 18,000 miles on it and
the owner insisted that the speedometer was still working (it has the
160 MPH speedo conversion).
It's a project car, so it may take me several years to fully restore
it. I'm in no hurry. If it takes a few months to save and buy the
right part, so be it. This list convinced me that the project was
doable, and the support system here is incredible. I'm glad to
finally be an active part of it.

Ever wonder why you car get dirty. The latest research done by the US
argricural Research Service (ARS) on stainless steel by Dr. Judy
Arnold. She says her research showed that electro polished stainless
steel "offers the best resistance to bacterial adhesion." The number of
bacteria on electro polishsed stainless steel was 1/15 that of regular
stainless steel.
Arnold has two theories for her findings. Either electropolishing
imparts a negative charge that repels bacteria, or the surface is too
smooth for bacterial attachment. She adds that mechanically polished
stainless steel (which is what a Delorean is) " made striations that
bacteria love."
We now know why those lines in the SS turn black.

Hi fellow DML'ers
Does anyone know if using compressed air to flush the fuel system
would cause a problem? I am going to drain the tank, and then planned
on disconnecting the fuel line between the fuel pump and the fuel
distributor and blowing compressed air through the line. Do you think
this could damage the accumulator? The car hasn't been started in at
least a year (probably 3 or 4), and I would rather err on the side of
being overly cautious on purging the system

Subject: DML: Lowering the front only
Has anyone tried to shorten the front springs to reduce the height of
the front of the car only? The height of the rear looks fine to me,
but 2 inches off of the front would eliminate that unnatural looking
gap between the tire and the wheel wells. Plus, it would give it more
of the rakish look. Is there something I am missing here? I am going
to perform an overhaul on the braking system this weekend, and
figured that I might as well address the ride height problem while I
have all four wheels off.
